A fun, Impromptu weekend

Hello! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. The theme for this weekend was impromptu as we went into the weekend with very few plans but ended up having a great, but busy weekend.

Friday night we kicked off the weekend by spending time with our next door neighbors who just welcomed an adorable baby boy into their family. Guy was in a milk coma when we were there and happily slept in my arms for nearly an hour! After our visit we ordered pizza and salad from Table 87 and spent the rest of the night catching up on Grey’s Anatomy.

Saturday morning we slept until 8:30 since neither of us thought to set an alarm. I quickly made smoothie bowl since I woke up craving something cold. This bowl had blueberries, Calfia Vanilla Almond Milk, Vital Proteins collagen powder, spinach, 1/2 banana, a dash of cinnamon and then topped with my favorite Purely Elizabeth granola!

Agter eating, I rushed over to Aline Pilates for my favorite class that they offer, Prenatal Pilates. The lovely owner, Carey, teaches the class and even though it is a prenatal class, I leave each week sweating and shaking from the tiny pulses.

I spent the rest of the afternoon making Southern Tomato Sandwiches, one of my favorite Southern appetizers or party staples. I volunteered to bring a Southern dish to Frank & Melissa’s Derby Party but waited until Saturday to finalize which dish I’d make.  Though they look simple, the mix of fresh, seasonal tomatoes and herbs paired with seasoning salt and mayoniase makes these a delicious combination! Once I was done cooking, I some how found myself on my hands and knees scrubbing our kitchen floor corners before using both our vacuum and Wetjet to scrub the entire downstaris.

Another thing I didn’t spend much time thinking about was my Derby Party outfit. In years past, I could just grab one of my many Lilly Pulitzer or other vibrant, bright dresses from my closet and pair it with my pink floppy hat. Unfortunately on Saturday when I tried on the five different dresses I’d earmarked in my mind for the derby, they either didn’t fit or were a bit too revealing in the chest area. After a few meltdowns, I decided to wear my Pinkblush dress that is quickly becoming a maternity staple. I hate that i’ve worn it for three different events in less than a month, but at this point, it is one of my most flattering dresses.

As always, Frank and Melissa hosted an amazing party. Just check out the incredible spread they offered their guests including the adorable horse cake pops, deviled eggs, macaroni and cheese, bbq and more! I’m already looking forward to next year’s party when I can enjoy a mint julep instead of sparkling water.

My body has clearly reached third trimester exhuastion as I slept until 9:45 yesterday! After a relaxing breakfast and coffee while reading the New York Times, we ran some errands around the neighborhood including shopping at the Greenmarket and picking up more herbs for our garden from our local hardware store.

Since my body was craving a relaxing yoga class, my friend Elizabeth and I made the last minute decision to sign up for Area Yoga’s Prenatal Yoga class. The 90-minute class was exactly what my lower back and hips needed as it was a mix of some power poses followed by a relaxing and stretching restorative flow. There was a block party going on during the class so our soundtrack included the local DJ’s favorite songs from the 80s, 90s and 2000s. I think my favorite was trying to enjoy savasana while Spice Girls blared below. It was very good practice in finding our center in the midst of chaos.

We closed out the weekend with two episodes of Big Little Lies and an easy but delicious dinner that included flank steak, homemade chimicurri sauce, roasted potatoes and garlic green beans.

Five Things from The Weekend – February 27th

Greetings from the friendly skies! I am currently en route to Las Vegas for my company’s annual sales meeting. While the week will be extremely busy and filled with long days, I’m looking forward to catching up with old friends and mentors and enjoying some fun in Vegas. Tonight we’re going to Beatles Love by Cirque du Soleil and Wednesday night we are going to see Backstreet Boys. Needless to say, I think I’ll need to jam out to some old school Backstreet Boys during this week’s hotel workouts.

This weekend was a fun-filled weekend with lots of friend time.

  1. The weekend started with a tough Xtend Barre workout with Heather and Melissa. I’ve said it before but Xtend Barre is unlike any barre class I’ve taken before. Within five minutes of starting the beads of sweat are beginning to pool and my arms are burning. Taking the class with friends made the time fly by quickly as we gave each other glances during the tough parts and enjoyed some quick dance parties during the transitions as Friday’s playlist was a fun one.
  2. After the workout Heather and I ended up enjoying fun evening together which included a dinner and dessert date in Brooklyn. It was fun to spend time together outside of workout gear or Orangetheory while enjoying pizza and cocktails (mocktails for me) at Boutros and oreo cheesecake at Mia’scheesecake
  3. Saturday morning I met some of my favorite ladies (Evann, Kayla, Theodora, Meaghan, Ashley, and Heather) at the Park Slope Orangetheory for a workout and brunch date. We powered through a strength workout which was one of the harder ones I’ve done – 30 minutes on the treadmill with LOTS of hills and then 30 minutes of strength. It was a blast working out with these ladies as we were dancing in between sets and on the treadmill, giving each other high fives and just smiling the entire workout.  After the workout we headed to Bergen Bagels for delicious bagel sandwiches and some much-needed catch up time while enjoying the sunshine and gorgeous weather. bergen bagels
  4. After enjoying a nap I headed to the Upper West Side to celebrate Zoe’s 30th birthday. Zoe and I met in London through Charlie a few years ago and it has been so fun to have she and her boyfriend in New York City. While I don’t make it up to the Upper West Side that often, it was a fun afternoon of nachos, laughter and having the opportunity to celebrate the birthday girl while meeting some of her friends.
  5. Yesterday Bo and I spent the day deep cleaning our apartment and working on a few projects before hosting some of our Geneva friends for a dinner. There was lots to celebrate including an engagement and a birthday. Even though it had been a while since we’d all spent an evening together, as one of them lives in Boston, the laughter and conversation flowed for hours.

Hope you had a great weekend!  I’ll do my best to share my Las Vegas adventures and how I strive for moderation and a healthy balance while traveling via Snapchat (@healthyhappier) and Insta Stories!

Weekend Highlights – October 31st, 2016

brooklyn-bridge-park

Happy Halloween! While I am not dressing up this year, I can’t wait for this evening’s Halloween festivities. Our neighborhood, Carroll Gardens, takes Halloween very seriously! Last year we had over 500 kids come by our house. This year, our entire building is going to hang out on the front stoop for an evening of Fall fun while giving out candy. Once we’re done handing out candy my sister-in-law, Meg, is going to hang out while we cook dinner and watch Hocus Pocus together. Since I’m not in an office setting this year, it’s easier to resist the Halloween candy but I am looking forward to a few handfuls of my favorite candy tonight – Reese’s Cups, Candy Corn and Twix! What is your favorite candy?

Unfortunately, this morning I slept through my alarm. I evidently turned it off at 5:45 when it went off but have no recollection of this. Oops.  Clearly my body needed more sleep after an exhausting work week and an equally exhausting, but fun weekend.

Speaking of the weekend, here are a few highlights from our busy weekend.

Ten Over Ten– By the end of last week, my nails were in horrible condition. I knew I wanted to get a manicure before the wedding festivities started Friday evening but didn’t know when I could squeeze it into the schedule since my meetings ended on Friday just before my hair appointment. Luckily, I found out from a friend that Ten Over Ten Financial District location opens at 8 AM on weekdays. I was able to enjoy a 20-minute manicure including their more natural nail polish lines, TenOverTen and RGB.

Drybar Boerum Hill You may have seen that I had a less than stellar experience at Drybar Greenwich Village on Friday night. I didn’t get seated until an hour after my appointment and ended up running late for the rehearsal dinner. Since the wedding on Saturday night was black tie, I wanted to have my hair blown out. After exchanging emails with the Drybar team, I gave their new Brooklyn location a try on Saturday. Luckily, Saturday’s experience at Drybar Brooklyn was wonderful! I was seated exactly at my appointment time and my stylist was able to bring my vision to life in just 45-minutes. The new space is bright, airy and as cute and fun as the rest of their locations.

Rent the Runway Success – After years of buying dresses for cocktail and black tie events, I’ve switched to exclusively using RTR for these events. This weekend I rented a knee length, black and gold Shoshanna dress for the rehearsal dinner and then a floor length, black and blue one shoulder Slate & Willow gown for the wedding.  The black and gold dress required a stick on bra which was less than ideal, but I still loved the dress and the fun details. I paired it with nude hose and my favorite black heels.  The floor length gown was one of the most comfortable gowns I’ve worn complete with pockets, side zipper and boning that helped it maintain shape.

Wedding Festivities – We were lucky to celebrate our friends Scott and Liz this weekend during their rehearsal dinner at Saxon+Parole and then the wedding at La Sirena at the Maritime Hotel. Even though we’ve lived in New York for years, this was actually our first local NYC wedding. After a long work week I was thankful that we didn’t have to travel for the wedding and it was fun to try two new restaurants as part of the celebration. The food at both locations exceeded our expectations! I especially loved La Sirena as a wedding venue since the split room allowed for the ceremony and cocktail hour to take place in one area before the group moved to the family style reception and dancing. They didn’t forget a single detail including a fun photo booth, oyster shucking hostesses during cocktail hour, great music for hours of dancing and even masks and props to transition the party from wedding to Halloween theme at midnight!  It was a glamorous affair as you can tell from these few pictures – such a fun night!

Long Walk through Brooklyn Bridge Park – Even though I slept nine hours Saturday night, I woke up yesterday feeling less than stellar after the wedding festivities. I was craving a run or other sweaty workout, but I knew that due to the humid weather and a nagging hamstring, I should choose another workout or rest. Instead of skipping my workout, I decided to head out for a long walk to enjoy the gorgeous 70 degree NYC weather. I listened to two podcasts while power walking through Brooklyn Heights and through Brooklyn Bridge Park.  I was wearing a giddy smile on my face the entire time. While I wished I could have been running, similar to the other people who were out completing their final long run before the marathon but due to the gorgeous weather and podcast, I still found myself enjoying the power walk.
