Central Park Turkey Trot

Happy Thanksgiving! Bo and I have so much to be thankful for this year including our wonderful friends and family, careers that challenge us each day, our health, our apartment which has truly become our home over the past year, and each of you!

Before spending the day together in the kitchen preparing for our Thanksgiving dinner which we’re hosting for five people, we headed to Central Park this morning for a 5k hosted by Beth. Appropriately named, RxBethOnTheRun’s Inaugural Central Park 5K Turkey Trot, the idea was to enjoy a relaxed 3.1 miles with friends as we enjoyed the sights and sounds of Central Park. Beth and Jen did a great job planning the run together in such short timing!

While our group was small this morning it was a great chance to catch up with familiar faces and get to know a few ladies who I’ve been friends with on Twitter for ages.

Beth mapped a course which took us from 72nd street up to the 90th street reservoir entrance, around the reservoir, back down the west side until reaching the transverse again! It was a perfect loop as the only hill was Cat Hill and the scenery around the reservoir and on the west side was right out of a New York City post card!

Our group naturally broke into two groups at time, Bo and Shannon leading the pack while the rest of us hung behind. I was surprised how great my legs felt overall and was pleased by the fact that I was able to start out around a 10 minute pace during the first mile which was the perfect warm up. By the end our pace was a fast 8 something which lead to a 9:30 overall pace!

Heading down the west side of the park we were able to see the Macy’s Day Parade floats lining up which was a special, unexpected treat!

As we crossed the finish line Beth graced each of us with homemade medals, an adorable touch!

Overall, this was such a fun event as it was free, a new tradition, relaxed, and the perfect way to start Thanksgiving. The gorgeous weather and sites only added to the event.

Now it’s time for us to get into the kitchen and finish cooking. And yes, I will be in the kitchen too today! I’m excited to spend the day learning and practicing some of my cooking and prep skills!

Savannah Turkey Trot

Happy Thanksgiving from Savannah, Georgia!

Last night we were lucky to have a wonderful, quick, and painless trip down from New York City. We left our apartment at 4pm for our 7:15 flight. The traffic was horrible due to the Midtown tunnel only allowing one lane of traffic. But, once we arrived at the airport we were through security in TEN minutes flat! I guess the moral of the story is that if you wait until the night before Thanksgiving to fly, you risk a cancelled flight but you benefit from the lack of travelers.

We were able to sit down at the new LaGuardia restaurant, Crust, for a quick beer and meal before our flight.

Overall, our experience at Crust was well worth the money. Priced in line with most New York brick oven pizza restaurants, it allowed us to sit and relax for an hour and a rest from the other stressed travelers.

Our flight was delayed an hour on the tarmac but by 10pm we were in my parent’s car heading towards the island and a warm, cozy bed. We needed our sleep because had big plans this morning: our first Turkey Trot!

A month ago I decided that it’d be really fun to participate in the Thanksgiving tradition of running a local Turkey Trot. After searching a few running databases, I found the 3rd Annual United Way Turkey Trot, sponsored by Fleet Feet Savannah and Critz BMW.

It was a cool Savannah morning, only 50 degrees, at 7:45 when we arrived at Daffin Park.

There was a crowd of around 1,000 people ready to enjoy a great quick 5k race. However, many of the participants, including Bo and me, arrived thinking the 5k started at 8am. To our surprise, the the Kids K started at 8am and then the Diaper Dash started at 8:15 followed by the 5k at 8:30. This meant that we spent about 30 minutes shivering, stretching, people watching and taking goofy pictures.

Yes, I was awake and excited while Bo was still a little tired and puffy eyed!

We watched the Kids K, which was pretty darn adorable!

After the kids and diapers finished, we lined up ready to get the party started.

IMG_5398

There were no corrals at the start so it was a little hectic when the starting gun sounded. My goal for today’s race was to enjoy myself and hopefully PR. My previous PR was 28:49 back in July 2010 during the Percy Sutton Harlem 5k.

Other than my misunderstanding with the start time, I really can’t say anything negative about the 5k. The course was gorgeous and ran through some of historic midtown Savannah and Daffin Park.

The course was perfectly flat and other than the sharp corners, was easy to navigate.  There were mile markers after each mile with locals passing out water to runners. I was surprised how many people came out to cheer, especially along mile 2-3.

I knew that I wanted to PR and that if I didn’t start out fast, I’d risk the chance of not being able to speed up enough. My first mile was around an 8:55, mile 2 was around 9:10, and the final mile was approximately an 8:55 which helped me run through the finish at a 9:02 pace, a 13 second per mile improvement versus my previous 5k PR!!

IMG_5396

Bo also rocked his first 5k back from injury, keeping an 8 minute pace! The only down fall to this small, local race is the lack of results. We didn’t stick around for the awards ceremony as we doubt we placed but I’d love to know my official time! I’m hoping they post them online tomorrow!

Now I’m ready to spend the rest of the day cooking in the kitchen with my mom and enjoying our families.

Happy Thanksgiving and please take time to thank each of your loved ones today.

Our First Thanksgiving

Yes, while our first Thanksgiving was last year, celebrated beach side in Anguilla, this year was our first true Thanksgiving as a married couple. I couldn’t have imagined a better Thanksgiving with both families blended together. Bo and I are both from Savannah which means that coming home for the holidays is simple for us but still requires balance between two families. Bo’s mother volunteered to host Thanksgiving for both families this year due to my mother’s work schedule. It was a wonderful evening filled with laughter, a succulent turkey, and lots of family love.

Bo’s family hosted my not only Bo and I but also my parents, my brother, and my grandparents this evening. It was so sweet of them to host us this holiday.

The gorgeous table greeted each of us as we walked through their door into a home filled with warm Thanksgiving aromas, flowing wine, and laughter.

IMG_7308

We spent the first half hour socializing and catching up as a group as it had been quite a while since we were all together.

We knew that dinner was going to be delicious when Bo started carving the turkey. The juices gushed out of the roasted turkey the moment his knife sliced through the crispy skin. Bo’s carving skills are truly an art!

IMG_7314 IMG_7315 IMG_7323 IMG_7324IMG_7330

Everything with this meal was amazing. The conversation flowed easily all night through dinner across all ages, 26 through 92!

My plate was filled to the brim with some white meat and plenty of sides. My favorite Thanksgiving bites include whole cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, and stuffing!

IMG_7339

My mom and I were in charge of desserts tonight as it was the least we could contribute to the wonderful meal.

IMG_7302 IMG_7303

Unfortunately, the Pioneer Woman’s pecan pie didn’t turn out as planned. We’ve decided that there must be an issue with my parent’s oven as all the ingredients were fresh and we followed the directions perfectly. The crazy thing is that our pumpkin pie was picture perfect!

IMG_7342 IMG_7343

However, the real surprise winner was the pumpkin cake crumble! People couldn’t get enough of this moist cake, bursting with crumbly pumpkin butter.

The recipe can be seen below, as photographed from the William-Sonoma recipe card. My dad picked the recipe up at the store yesterday during his Christmas shopping. I highly suggest you try this recipe the next time you need a tasty dessert that transports easily!

The dishes are cleaned up, the silver is soaking, and the leftovers have been dispersed. Another successful and delicious Thanksgiving is in the books. Now it’s time to start planning the Christmas Eve and Christmas Day menus!

Happy Thanksgiving!

What does your family do for Christmas? Are the meals similar to Thanksgiving?
