Turkey Trot Fun & 10 Black Friday Deals

Thanksgiving has arrived! It has always been one of my favorite holidays as it includes delicious food, time with family & friends, a chance to pause and reflect and kicks off the holiday season.

Thanksgiving in Geneva has taken on a bit of a different meaning for us. This year, due to meetings and schedules, I am not able to take today off. However, tonight we will once again share our American traditions with fellow Americans and our European friends. There will be lots of wine, more homemade food than we can imagine eating and laughter. While we can’t be with family today, it does feel wonderful to make our traditions. Typically, right about now, I’d be with my mom in the kitchen, sipping coffee and whipping up sweet potato casserole!

This morning we woke up early for a Turkey Trot 5k which was our casual attempt to bring tradition to Geneva. We decided the route upon meeting at the starting point and our neon group chatted in the darkness of Geneva before sunrise. Meghann had the chance to meet many people she’ll see again tonight at dinner, which was a bonus. Can you believe three people in this picture are from Tampa, Florida?

Before signing off for the day, I wanted to also share a few Black Friday shopping specials. Thanks to the awesome site Unroll.me, I haven’t received many Black Friday emails. While I do not support shopping in store on Thanksgiving Day, I love snagging a good deal just like the next person. Maybe I’m partial since I work in the eCommerce space, but I’d rather shop online any day! Below are a few of the deals I’ve found online along with one item I’d snag at each retailer. I’ve listed these, subjectively, based on the level of discount. It’s amusing that these are all advertised as Black Friday deals since it’s not Black Friday yet!

  • Target has the Canon Rebel T5 50% off today on their website! http://buff.ly/1CkEXxU
  • Amazon has the Kindle on sale for $45! http://buff.ly/1CkI9ta
  • Bloomingdales is featuring 50% off LOTS of items AND $25 off every $200 you spend! This cashmere sweater is perfect for winter – cozy and cashmere!
  • J. Crew Factory is offering 50% off everything! Considering the prices on this site are an average of 50% less than their parent site, this is a deal not to miss. I just added this multistrand pearl necklace to my bag. It’s the perfect, classic accessory to take a basic top to the next level!
  • Ann Taylor is offering 50% off everything! Nothing screams winter and a fireplace like an ivory cable sweater.
  • Ann Taylor Loft is offering 50% off! These denim leggings are the perfect staple for any wardrobe and at less than $40 they are a STEAL!
  • C Wonder is offering 40% off through Dec. 1! It’s hard to choose just one item but with the discount these slippers are perfect for any lady on your list, including you!
  • J.Crew is featuring 30% off and free shipping which is a rare luxury! I love the Minnie pant for work as it’s comfortable like a legging or jean but has belt loops and a zipper, all the things necessary to make it more work appropriate!
  • Madewell: Get 25% off through Nov. 30 at Madewell with code GIFTON. My favorite heels are on sale, AND you get an additional 25% off!
  • Piperlime: Get 25% off through Nov 29 using the code THANKFUL.  Sales like this are always the perfect time to replace my favorite items, such as black jeans! I swear by these and at 25% off I’m tempted to buy two pairs!

Thanksgiving in Geneva

From our home to yours, I hope you had a wonderful day of rest with friends and family. Our house officially felt like a home last night! We hosted 12 friends last night including one special guest from New York City! Our friend Michael added Geneva to his European trip so he could celebrate Thanksgiving and my birthday with us this weekend. It was so fun to introduce him to our Geneva friends who he has heard so much about the past few months!2013-11-28 23.01.40

Our flat’s open floor plan proved to be perfect for hosting and entertaining as the guests could easily flow from the kitchen, living room and dining area.

Both our European and American friends enjoyed themselves and their first taste of Thanksgiving. I can’t believe last night was the first time many of our friends, including those from Belgium, enjoyed raw brussels sprouts!

As the hosts, Bo and I made the salad course, turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie! 2013-11-28 21.47.35-12013-11-28 21.15.022013-11-28 23.34.50The last guests didn’t leave until well past midnight and there were over 16 bottles of wine recycled this morning!2013-11-29 10.45.16-1

Today was spent relaxing with Bo and Michael as I took the day off from work to both kick off my birthday celebrations and relax after Thanksgiving. After sleeping until 10 we spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon enjoying cappuccino and quiche at a local bakery followed by a long walk through Geneva.

The rest of the afternoon and evening involve birthday festivities with our friends! It’s time to toast to turning 30! I couldn’t be more excited to dance the night away! While I wish I could transport my US based friends to the event, I’m thankful for tonight’s celebration with our Geneva friends!

Thanksgiving 2012: On Our Own

Yesterday’s Thanksgiving celebration was a very unique one. For both Bo, Meg, and I it was our first Thanksgiving without our parents, or in my case my parents or brother. Due to the cost of flights going home didn’t make sense this year as neither of us were sure of our work schedule until just this month. In addition, we’ll be spending the holidays together as a large group as both the Diamond and Rudolph family are celebrating in Vermont this year.

I would be lying if I said that our first Thanksgiving on our own wasn’t a tremendous success and pretty low stress.

Bo and I spent the morning in the kitchen together preparing each of our dishes that we’d decided on ahead of time thanks to Bon Appetit’s amazing Thanksgiving micro site and other recipes I’d previously pinned on Pintrest.

IMG_6076IMG_6078IMG_6081IMG_6083IMG_6099Meg showed up around 12:30 with our turkey and an arm full of pies. The turkey was in a bucket since it had been brining in her refrigerator. We were very thankful to have both our small refrigerator and her larger, full size refrigerator to use during the busy Thanksgiving prep time!

By 3pm, our table was set complete with our wedding china, silver, and crystal! It was such a treat to open everything and set the table using gifts that we haven’t enjoyed in 3 years! In retrospect, we have had many occasions when we could have used these and now realize that it’s well worth the effort!

Since we were only hosting five people, including ourselves, we were able to fit the place settings at one small table, as long as we set up a buffet on the counter for the food.

We spent the next few hours basting the turkey and sequencing things through the oven while enjoying each of the Friends Thanksgiving episodes! Meg had a great idea as this was the perfect way to kick back and relax together while laughing and sipping on wine!

By 6:30 it was time for appetizers, winter squash and onion confit with ricotta on toast and pears with Manchego cheese.

Our guests and good friends, Brad and Margaret brought the pear appetizer and a few bottles of wine and beer with them and were ready for a delicious evening!

At 7pm, the turkey was unveiled and was absolutely breath taking! Bo outdid himself and the turkey was moist on the inside, flavorful, and crisp on the outside. Brining a turkey makes such a difference!

After admiring the display of food we served ourselves and sat down for a meal filled with stories about each of our Thanksgiving memories and family traditions.

I served myself a bit of everything but was most excited for the dressing which I made from scratch for the first time yesterday! The large bread chunks and rich flavor had me after just one bite! Brad and Margaret’s collard greens were a new touch for us as neither Bo nor I have ever had these as part of a Thanksgiving meal but loved them! I can’t wait to get the recipe.

While our food settled, we chatted on the couch and sipped on cocktails, compliments of Brad and Margaret. Margaret has become known in our group of friends for her unique cocktails and last night didn’t disappoint! We sipped on pomegranate infused prosecco which was delicious!

IMG_6136

Last but not least, we enjoyed dessert compliments of Meg. She made a pecan pie and chocolate pumpkin pie from scratch, both of which were enjoyed with homemade whip cream!

IMG_6150

It was a wonderful evening which Bo and I will remember forever! We are so thankful for our friends and family, though last night was a special first for us.
