A Fun Lunch Run with a Twist

Happy Friday! This weekend is going to be a nice break after so much travel the past few months. Since the weather is supposed to be sunny and unseasonably warm, a few of us are heading to the Saleve for a hike during the day tomorrow. The rest of the weekend includes some baking, curling up with my book and catching up on a few of my favorite television shows. There are certain shows that Bo and I watch together but when he’s out of town, I tend to watch my guilty pleasures, aka the shows he doesn’t like.

But, before I can focus anymore on the weekend,  I have to share today’s workout with you all! It was a tough one but so much fun! As many of you all know, Renaud is my most athletic friend. Always up for an adventure, when he invited me to join he and a few other co-workers for their lunchtime workout, a run with a twist.  I gladly accepted!  I love getting out of the office during lunch to enjoy some fresh air and clear my mind before starting the second part of the day. I realize just how lucky I am to have this opportunity and therefore feel the need to take full advantage of it as often as possible!

The workout was described to me as a mix of running and strength. Since I’m trying to get back into my running groove and am always trying to find new ways to squeeze in strength training, it sounded perfect! In fact, it reminded me a lot of the running boot camp workouts Anne features on her blog.

We ran, or I should say I followed behind as quickly as possible, just under 2 miles to a large park and sports area, Les Evaux. This park is HUGE and has sports fields, ropes courses, playgrounds galore, and running trails! Today we spent time on the “yellow trail” which is not only a nice, wooded path, but it also features workout stations where you can do everything from pull-ups to dips!

We continued our workout with one loop of the path that was a mile in distance, following the yellow arrows. Renaud pointed out each of our workout stations, giving me directions and tips as we ran past them.

After the first loop, our second loop included stopping at each station and doing the exercise 3x as a group. The guys motivated me to push just a bit harder or do one more rep. I don’t have pictures of each station but these are the ones I remember: hanging ring leg lifts, parallel bar dips, balance beam, push-up station, dip station, incline pull-up station, agility drill station, jump station,  and step up station.

After completing each of the stations, we would run to the next station until we finished the loop again. By this point, we’d been working out for an hour and all I wanted was a bus to pass by, ready to give me a lift back to the office. Nope, unfortunately, we had another 2 mile run back to the office!

This running boot camp was such an efficient workout, combining a 5.5 mile run with lots of strength work. The loop with the strength exercises was challenging but provided a welcome change versus another mile of running. We did our best to sprint between the stations, though, after a few of them, such as the step ups, running wasn’t exactly easy. Many of the exercises  were ones that I have never done before nor would even think about incorporating into my training, such as the balance and agility work! Even though I was in the back of the group, I hope to join the guys again next week. Practice makes perfect, right?

If you could do only one strength exercise, what would it be? Mine would probably be dips push-ups!

The Morning Run

Last year, I ran before work almost daily. The runs varied in distance, but I knew that at least three mornings per week I was lacing up my shoes and out the door before 6:15am.

Lately, I haven’t been running much at all, especially not before work. In fact, it is hard to believe that 51 days ago I ran the Berlin Marathon and 37 days ago I ran my first trail half marathon.

Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t been recovering or taking a break from working out. Instead, I’ve been spending far more time cross training. After focusing so much of my time and effort on running, focusing my energy on cross training has been a welcome change of pace. I am not constantly comparing myself to others or to my previous abilities as so many of these activities are new. I’ve written previously (here) about the rabbit’s hole I find myself in every few months, coveting other people’s runs and comparing myself.

I have no desire to return to that place. Swimming has given me a confidence I haven’t felt in ages. Each Tuesday and Thursday morning, as I’m showering after practice, I basically give myself a personal high five just for waking up and surviving practice. In addition to swimming, I’ve found myself incorporating more strength work and group fitness classes. This change of pace has allowed me to stay in shape and stay motivated during the previous few weeks of rain in Geneva.

But this morning, as Mary and I ran along the lake, I remembered why I used to run each morning. While any morning workout provides me with a burst of energy stronger than any cup of coffee, running is one of the only morning workouts that also allows me to enjoy that breath of fresh air. I find myself inside, especially during the winter months, for the majority of each day. Even though the sun may not be shining and as the weeks continue each run will be colder and colder, the fresh air regardless the temperature, invigorates me. It allows me to enjoy morning views of the snow capped mountains, explore the streets before the commuters takeover and spend time catching up with a friend or just my thoughts.

My race calendar may only consist of fun 5k and 10k races over the next few months, until my Spring goal race, the Publix Savannah Women’s Half Marathon, but that won’t keep me from heading out the door at least a few mornings each week.

A Confidence Building 17 Miles

Happy Saturday!!!

I was just telling Theodora that after training for four marathons, it seems like the 5th time is a charm. I am loving marathon training this year and so far it seems to be loving me right back with strong results!

As Bo is still recovering, I was in charge of dinner last night. He taught me how to make our favorite long run dinner – sautéed scallops over angel hair pasta with basil and fresh tomato sauce. On the side we enjoyed some crusty bread, a glass of wine and Good Morning Vietnam.

I rolled over this morning at 6am and felt the cool air coming through the window. That and a double check on the Weather Channel app confirmed that I didn’t have to wake up early to beat the heat. It was 48 degrees and the temperature by noon would only be 65. I curled up and slept for another 2 hours.

I spent an hour sipping coffee and NUUN, eating peanut butter and banana on toast and foam rolling while hanging out with Bo. I also spent some time mapping out a completely new route that would take me out through France before coming back into the Swiss countryside.  image

It was so nice to relax and enjoy the morning before heading out the door at 9:15. Once again I wore my favorite running outfit which is definitely going to be sported in Berlin on September 28th. Regardless the temperature it is perfect!

Why hello, small little border crossing! 2014-08-16 10.05.26

I was able to run on bike paths or sidewalks for 90% of today’s run which was such an absolute joy! I was rarely alone and the views were magnificent. Different from my normal lake views, today I had corn, sunflowers, fluffy clouds and cows for as far as my eyes could see. Passing through a few small towns meant that I never had to worry about running out of water. I fueled while taking this picture at mile 6 with a salted caramel Gu. The small, picturesque church was right in front of me as I turned to run into the town.

I lost myself in my thoughts and today’s Spotify playlist which included everything from Avicii, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Jessie J, Swedish House Mafia, Taylor Swift, The Killers, Bastille, The Lumineers, Calvin Harris and La Roux!

My only other stop was at mile 12 to take in another Gu and refill my water bottle at a small roadside café. 2014-08-16 11.14.49

I knew I was almost done when I reached the lake, a welcome site. The sun was shining, the breeze was blowing and as I ran into a co-worker I couldn’t help but smile. I felt stronger on this long run than I have ever felt on a run of this length.

I am so thankful for today’s run. It was the confidence booster that I needed to remind me that what was once my dream, stretch goal for Berlin can actually become a reality if I continue training smart and strong.
