London: Three Great Food Finds

Since moving to London, Bo and I have found the restaurant scene to be a bit overwhelming and difficult to navigate. Now, this probably due more to the fact that we aren’t here often enough to immerse ourselves into the restaurant scene in the manner we did when living in NYC full time. Instead, each Friday or Saturday when we’re in the city we find ourselves desperately searching for last minute availability at a restaurant which has been recommended to us or we’ve discovered via articles. I know, it’s so easy to have the foresight to make reservations in advance but sometimes life gets in the way.

But this weekend the stars aligned for us and we ended up enjoying three meals which left us wanting to return and each of these restaurants will receive a stellar Yelp review from me along with a pin on my London Pinterest board.

929 934 935 936Victus & Bibo – We discovered this food stand within the Greenwich Market due to the long line which wrapped around the stand twice! Anytime we exploring a local market the true symbol of good food is the line length. Not only did this stand have a long line though it also had amazing aromas! A classic high-end Turkish food stand, they have one dish that that they feature along with a few variations. The magic is in the fact that this one menu item is what has made them popular and keeps people coming back each Friday, Saturday and Sunday when they are at the market. Their signature, the lamb & haloumi wrap, was large enough for us to split between the two of us for a small yet satiating lunch. They used the classic Turkish chili flakes in the meat as it simmered before piling that into a wrap topped with hummus, grilled halloumi, lettuce, chilies, peppers, and yogurt sauce. The flavors were delicious and the hearty wrap kept us full for hours!

1654164516461652Trishna– This restaurant is a food gem hidden on a side street of Marylebone. For Americans like us who have not experienced much Indian food beyond either our friend’s cooking or delivery in New York City, it’s hard to know what to look for in an Indian restaurant. We haven’t been to many so when we heard that Trishna was awarded a Michelin star we were immediately intrigued and excited! Trishna’s service and cuisine blew our minds within the first five minutes. We snagged a table for two on Friday night around 7:30 which was clearly right before their rush hour. The menu features many Southwest Indian dishes while also blending together some local British seafood and meats. The cocktail menu, which many on Yelp recommended, was a series of classic cocktails with an Indian twist such as Masala spice or Saffron in drinks such as margaritas and Old Fashions. We started with the margarita and mojito before enjoying three appetizers and a shared entree. The tandoori lamb chops entree and the aloo chat appetizer were our favorite dishes of the evening. It should be noted that this restaurant’s menu is not for the faint of heart when it comes to spices. Our waiter laughed as we gulped down glasses of water following one very spice appetizer before suggesting we sip on a lassi instead. If you’re able to snag reservations between 6-6:30pm you can enjoy their Early Evening menu which is 4 courses for 28 pounds!1025102710221023Gail’s Kitchen– After a morning visit to the Viking’s exhibit at the British Museum we chose to walk home versus take the tube due to the gorgeous sunshine. When I spotted an open table under the bright red awning at Gail’s Kitchen, I immediately knew it was our sign that we should enjoy brunch. The menu features their personal take on some traditional British brunch favorites such as a proper fry up while also featuring some unique items which have put them on the map. We opted to trust the Yelp reviews and order exactly what they recommended: house made lemonade with elderflower, iced coffee, shakshuka eggs and a bread basket. The shakshuka eggs which featured eggs baked in smoky red pepper, tomato sauce and feta was absolutely amazing and the flavors left us thinking about it all afternoon. In fact, we may have asked if they were open for dinner on Sunday nights.  Everything on their menu revolves around the house made breads, which did not disappoint.

There you have it, our weekend in food! If you’re a London local or have visited before, what are your no miss restaurants or food stalls?

NYC: Favorite Manhattan Eats

For people visiting and even living in New York City the restaurant scene can be intimidating as hell. There are restaurants around every single corner boasting different ratings and rankings some of which one has never heard of before, especially if you’re visiting from another country. Even though Bo and I called New York City home for five years, we weren’t even able to conquer NY Magazine’s annual best of restaurant list each year.

However, during our five years in the city we did fall in love with a few restaurants which became our go-to spots when friends or family were in town. So now, when we’re back in the city, we can be found enjoying one of these spots. This list is for anyone in the city looking to take in some of the awesome food culture NYC has to offer – enjoy the burgers, cupcakes, and brunches!

In no particular order, here are a few of our favorite spots which are perfect for just about any occasion, unless otherwise noted. Depending on the time of year, always ask if you can enjoy outdoor seating to enjoy more people watching and scenery.

The Meatball Shop –  My favorite dish is their Everything in the Kitchen Sink with the family jewels added on the side!

Agave – Delicious margaritas, killer veggie fajitas, and some of our favorite guacamole.

Big Gay Ice Cream -  American Globs for the win.

La Esquina – Drool worthy Mexican street corn and fish tacos.

New Wonjo – Delicious Korean BBQ

Prune – Chef Gabrielle Hamilton’s James Beard award winning casual, delicious restaurant in the West Village.

Gramercy Tavern – One of the best dining experiences in the city with casual, beautiful environment and amazing service.

Shake Shack – Head to the Madison Square Park location for a Shack Burger, fries and shake!

Aqua Grill – I can’t go their without ordering their seafood plateau.

Pure Food and Wine – Their Hen of the Woods tacos, tamales, Philly rolls, and classic sundae are no miss menu items!

15 East – Incredible but expensive sushi.

Bubby’s – They offer something for every person’s brunch taste but their Bloody Mary helped put them on the map.

Maialino – Danny Meyer’s trattoria located in Gramercy Park Hotel has creative house, made pastas on their dinner menu but the brunch menu is actually our favorite.

Murray’s Bagels – Everyone in NYC has their favorite bagel place but this is ours. After a long run there is nothing better than a toasted everything bagel with chive cream cheese!

Two Little Red Hens – An off the beaten path bakery located in Yorkville (86th Street) their cupcakes and whoopie pies answered all my cravings.

Luke’s Lobster – A lobster shack in the heart of Manhattan, it’s worth paying $20 for the lobster roll, chips, beer and a pickle.

Minetta Tavern – The burger.

Momofuku – If you can’t get into the original,  Ssam Bar and Milk Bar are both experiences of their own. How can you beat the Milk Bar compost cookies, crack pie, birthday cake truffles and cereal milk ice cream?

ABC Kitchen – Located in the gorgeous and lust worthy ABC Carpet, their roasted kabocha squash toast and fried organic chicken are two of my favorite menu items.

The Spotted Pig – Once again, this restaurant is known to have one of NYC’s best burgers but it is a great place to spot celebs or enjoy a drink after work.

Casa Mono – Spanish tapas restaurant located in Gramercy whose menu reminds me of my study abroad days in Cadiz, Spain.

Your Turn: Tell me, what did I miss?

Where to Eat and Drink in Savannah

Believe it or not, it’s not easy to answer questions about Savannah restaurants. There are so many amazing restaurants in Savannah and my family is close friends with so many different restaurant owners, the last thing I want to do is hurt anyone’s feelings.

But, the Savannah Rock N Roll marathon and half marathon are quickly approaching and I’ve promised a few readers that I’d provide suggestions on where to eat, celebrate, and relax while they are in my hometown. Therefore, I’ve decided to highlight a few of my absolute favorite places on this blog and am making myself available via comments, email, Twitter, and Facebook for further questions.

If you read this and are from Savannah or have experience in the city, I’d love you to add your two cents in the comment section. Being a native who only has the opportunity to return a few times each year, I may forget about or not even know about a recent addition to the Savannah food and drink scene.  Without further ado, below are my suggestions of places to eat, relax, and party in Savannah.

Carb Load the Night Before

It would be very easy for me to limit this to restaurants in historic, downtown Savannah since that is where the race begins and ends. However, I am being realistic and realize that many people are staying at hotels all over the city. Therefore, I chose one restaurant downtown and one restuarant in midtown.

Oh Shit I Forgot My Running Shoes

While I assume the RNR expo will have plenty of running gear and options, I can’t recommend Fleet Feet Savannah highly enough! The staff is super friendly, they’ve helped bring the marathon to Savannah, and they have a great selection!

Favorite Breakfast or Brunch

Savannah does food very well, especially anything that has the word biscuit or bacon in it! These are in descending order and I can’t stress enough how amazing both The Breakfast Club and Mrs.. Wilkes are in their own ways. If you’re looking for a big out place post half or marathon that is steps from the beach than Breakfast Club is your place. If you want a true taste of Southern cooking than Mrs.. Wilkes is your best bet and it’s also located in historic downtown.

Jalapeno’s (cheap Mexican with amazing margaritas that are the perfect way to celebrate post race)
The Pink House (It epitomizes Savannah: classy, Southern, and reasonably priced.)
Mrs.. Wilke’s Dining Room (See above)
Soho South Cafe (Eclectic and funky but serves delicious new Southern bistro lunches.)
I’m Ready to Toast the Amazing Race I Just Ran
            Churchill’s Restaurant and Tavern
Pinkie Master’s Lounge (One of Savannah’s oldest bars.)
Savannah Smiles Dueling Piano’s (Always a good time!)
Wet Willie’s (Their really sweet slushy drinks pack a delicious punch!)
            Molly MacPherson’s or Murphy’s Law

Last But Not Least, My Favorite Restaurant in Savannah

            Elizabeth’s on 37th Street
