Our First Date Night Post-Baby

IMG_8556

Can you tell that Bo and I enjoyed our first date night together since Katie’s arrival? Last night’s date night was a perfect opportunity to reflect on the past 18 week since we became a family of three and remember the strong foundation we had as a couple before her arrival.

Many of our friends and family members recommended that we plan a date night sooner versus later. Luckily, our dear friend Heather, who happens to be pregnant, offered to babysit for us a few times before she and her husband welcome their own child. Heather was a nanny during college for a young child so we felt very comfortable in her ability to watch Katie. Since it was our first time leaving Katie alone, we decided to leave for our date night after Katie went down for the evening. Heather arrived at 7pm so she could keep me company during Katie’s bedtime bottle and also become comfortable with the nighttime routine and our nursery. While feeding Katie, I walked Heather through our typical routine in the chance that Katie woke up while we were gone. At this point, once Katie falls asleep around 7:45pm she typically doesn’t wake up again until 7 AM. However, if she does wake up, it tends to be within an hour of falling asleep and often times it’s due to a wet diaper.

At 7:55 Bo and I hopped in an Uber towards Red Hook, a Brooklyn neighborhood just ten minutes from our house. We wanted to go to dinner somewhere close, in case there was an issue. The only other request I made to Bo, before we chose a restaurant, was that we tried somewhere new. Luckily, the Michelin Guide’s 2017 Bib Gormand list was released this week – perfect inspiration for finding a new restaurant. In case you haven’t heard of it before, the Bib Gormand list features their favorite restaurants where guests can enjoy two courses plus a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less. One of the restaurants, The Good Fork, stood out to us as it is Korean New American food and located in an area of Red Hook we haven’t visited before.

The intimate restaurant seats 30-40 people max and we were lucky to be seated at a cozy, corner booth in the front which provided us the perfect venue to watch the people and food go by throughout the evening.

We toasted with an Old Fashion and Dark & Stormy to celebrate our date night and then got to business, studying the menu. The menu is smaller than most, with six appetizer options and eight main course options. This allowed us enough choice without overwhelming us. We decided to share three of the appetizers so we could taste as many dishes as possible, and then ordered the entrée that they are best known for and which has been on their menu since they opened in 2005.

We started with the homemade dumplings and scallion pancakes before enjoying the farm salad, which included whipped stilton cheese and roasted fall squash. The pork and chive dumplings were crispy yet light thanks to the delicate dough wrapping that didn’t overpower the other flavors.

For our main dish we shared the Steak and Eggs Korean style which was served kimchee rice, fried egg, arugula and apples. The dish was delicious and reminded us of bibimbap. IMG_8570

Last but not least, we shared two of the desserts although we were too full to finish them. Steve’s Key Lime Pie which is a local favorite from a nearby bakery was tart and sweet but I personally thought the crust was a bit much. In my opinion the S’More’s Ice Cream sundae was the winner though just two bites nearly put me in a sugar coma.

And yes, we those parents who took a break during our date to sneak a peek at our sleeping daughter on the Nest camera.

While our date night was only two hours, it was the perfect amount for our first time away from Katie. Our goal is to enjoy at least one date night per month, leveraging family and Heather until we are able to find a local babysitter.

The Chef And The Doctor Dinner Series at Bouley Botanical

Over the years, I’ve walked by the unassuming door of Bouley Botanical, never wondering more about the space.

IMG_2925

However, earlier this month when Bo and I had the opportunity to walk through the door of David Bouley’s private event space, we felt as if we’d walked into a greenhouse versus a restaurant.  Th space is elegant but open and filled with a floor-to-ceiling herb garden!

When we were invited to join David Bouley’s lecture and dinner series, The Chef and the Doctor we quickly discovered that David Bouley’s passion is health and wellness. In fact, the chef recently retooled his restaurants and himself after recently becoming obsessed with health issues and taking nutrition classes at NYU and getting his executive MBA at Harvard.

Based on his health adventures over the past year, this series seems like a natural fit for his brand. The series of collaborative health- focused lectures bring together world renowned doctors and experts with a multi-course dinner curated by Chef David Bouley. This clearly would not be your typical tasting menu or meal that would leave us in a food coma or feeling sick to our stomachs. Instead, we were intrigured to learn about the evening’s lecture topic, Linking Agriculture to Human Nutrition Through Cuisine, and see how David Bouley would weave health and wellness into the menu.

The lecture, led by Dr. Ray Glahn, an Associate Professor in the Department of Food Science at Cornell, shared his research related to how nutrients, taste and cooking time were related to the poulatrity of certain beans in Africa. They were trying to figure out, through the research, whether there was a way to optimize the nutrients relative to cooking time since a shorter cooking time is what makes beans popular. However, typically the beans with the lowest cooking time have the fewest nutrients.  It was so interesting yet so out of our typical consideration space.

Following the lecture, it was time to dine. The menu for The Chef and The Doctor with Dr. Ray Glahn is below.  IMG_2931

Malibu Sea Urchin with Green Apple, Meyer Lemon

Wild Coho Alaskan Salmon Fingerling Rosti Golden Oscietra Caviar, Salmon Trout Roe

Porcini Flan Golden Princess & Alaskan Dungeness Crab, Black Truffle Dashi

French Provence Jumbo White and Local Green Pencil Asparagus  Spirulina, Pumpkin Seed, Apple Cider Vinaigrette

Grass-Fed 100% Organic NY State Black Angus Steak Tartare

Harry’s Berries Mara des Bois Strawberry Parfait, Dairyless Almond Cloud

Valrhona Bitter Chocolate Soufflé (Traditional) Tahitian Vanilla

Bouley Botanical’s The Chef & The Doctor Series Tasting MenuFirst of all, let me recommend to any pregnant readers, that you not participate in a tasting menu during your third trimester. Regardless how healthy the food was, it was too much food for my cramped stomach. But, Bo’s experience, on the other hand was very different. This was one of his favorite food experiences in recent memory and he is still talking about his favorites from the evening – the sea urchin, crab and the steak tartare.

If you are interested in attending one of the future Chef and the Doctor Dinner Series events at Bouley Botanical, you can find out more information on their special events site. There are seven events coming up in the next few months including topics such as Eating for Immunity and Inner Balance as well as Healing Arthritis through Food.

Thank you to the team at Bouley Events and Dining for inviting Bo and I to participate in this special evening of learning, food and community. As always, all opinions are my own.

Not Our Average Weekend

Good morning! Similar to many of you, Bo and I have today off in honor of Martin Luther King Day. Unfortunately, this weekend continues to be one that is very different than what we envisioned.

Friday, Bo spent the day working from home as he was overcoming a 24-hour virus he caught Wednesday night. The virus included stomach pains, body aches, low fever and malaise. By Friday evening he was going stir crazy, so we enjoyed a date night.

Our evening started at the new Park Slope Orangetheory Fitness to celebrate their grand opening. My good friend, Heather, is the studio manager and has spent countless hours over the past few months getting the studio ready for business.

After hanging out with Heather, her husband Scott and the Orangetheory team we headed to dinner at a new Fort Green restaurant, Lady’s. I discovered the new restaurant when searching for reservations on OpenTable and was delighted to give the Italian restaurant a try, especially since the initial reviews have been very strong. While the service was spotty, at best, the atmosphere was chic and inviting and the space was packed on Friday night. We started our dinner by sharing two appetizers, meatballs and beet salad, both of which were delicious. We continued the evening by trying their honey pizza, which was written up and celebrated in multiple reviews. Unfortunately, it was far too sweet for our taste, especially mid-dinner. We continued the night by sharing a pasta, as all their pasta is made fresh in-house. The chestnut campanelle, which was rich, creamy and flavorful, was the star of the meal.  We would definitely go back, though I think I’ll give them a month or so to improve their service as it took us 2.5 hours to enjoy dinner since the pasta course was served almost an hour after the previous course.

Even though I thoroughly disinfected our home and slept in our spare bedroom, on Wednesday and Thursday night, by the end of our meal, I started to feel ill. I looked at Bo and asked if headache and sore throat were part of the virus. Unfortunately, he nodded, knowingly, and said that we should head home immediately.

I was in bed from 9:30 Friday night until 1pm Sunday. Over those 30 hours I experienced everything from low fever, headache, severe body aches, vomiting, and constant nausea. Moments like this make me so thankful for my mom and friends who are nurses as I was texting and calling them to ensure I was doing the right thing for myself and Baby Girl Diamond during the virus. I only took 2 doses of Tylenol during the time but made sure to force plenty of fluids and some basic foods, following the BRAT diet, down to give her sustenance.

The time in bed provided me with time to catch up on my favorite television shows, watch a movie (Bridget Jones Baby), start a new series (Catastrophe) and make it halfway through the book, Present Over Perfect.

Giggle shopping

Yesterday afternoon, after holding down food and feeling much better, Bo and I headed out to do some nursery shopping at a few different baby stores including the new BuyBuyBaby at LibertyView in Brooklyn, Sprout, Giggles and finally Pottery Barn Kids. It was great to touch, feel and see some of the items we’d added to our online registry as well as finally make a decision on a few of our larger pieces, including stroller and crib.

Unfortunately, this morning, we woke up to find that half our building is without power which means that basically every other room has power. We do not have heat and we can’t use much of our kitchen. While we are lucky to have running water and internet, it still puts a burden on our final day of the three day weekend.  At this point, I’m just laughing off the long weekend and planning to spend the rest of today relaxing, reading and trying to enjoy as much of the day as possible.

How was your weekend?
