Farewell Summer Friday

Today marked the last Summer Friday before Fall returns. Gone are the Friday half days, New York City’s exodus to the beaches, and warm hazy afternoon. Unfortunately, my last Summer Friday didn’t go quite as planned. I missed lunch at Alice’s Tea Cup with Meghann, Heather, and Theodora for a simple Greek salad at my desk.

Luckily, I was able to leave my office by 3pm to meet Bo, Meghann and Derek!

IMG_4616 Reunited and it feels so good!

We stopped by the apartment to freshen up before relaxing with fun drinks at the Gramercy Hotel rooftop bar. IMG_4621

IMG_4622The bar has some great views, a relaxed vibe, and creative decor.

  IMG_4618 IMG_4620

The bar is open to locals and hotel guests alike as long as it isn’t reserved for a special event or party. A few weeks ago Alicia Keys rented it out for her birthday party!

After a long week, we were all ready for some fun drinks. Meghann and I both ordered a cherry almond seasonal cocktail but it was more like a gin mojito. Regardless, neither of us had a hard time enjoying it! Derek’s was electric blue and took him back to Florida’s beaches as it was a fruity rum drink. Oh summer, how I’ll miss you!

Bo kept it simple and classic with a smudged martini.

IMG_4625 After relaxing on the rooftop and recounting college memories, we headed over a few blocks to enjoy a taste of Italy.

Eataly is Mario Batali’s latest undertaking in NYC. A massive Italian food emporium, it also features six restaurants and a brewery-gastropub on the roof! Eataly opened this week to rave reviews. It is an open sale environment which allows consumers to interact with the products and explore at length. The crowds were manageable today as you can see from the pictures. Unfortunately, the thought of eating dinner there was a bit too overwhelming. But, we hope to return later this weekend for some tastings!

Luckily, we had reservations waiting at Remi. IMG_4652Located in the theatre district, Bo discovered this restaurant on Zagat while searching for a pre-theatre Italian restaurant. We all agreed that Italian was the perfect cuisine the night before a long run!

The restaurant was vibrant and warm due to a bright mural, yet the quiet atmosphere gave it an intimate almost romantic feel. IMG_4653We were surprised by the dishes, each being unique but delicious. Their pastas were anything but typical, each featuring a unique pasta shape and ingredients. None of us could choose one winner though we all enjoyed Meghann’s pasta, my seafood, and Derek’s sauce.

IMG_4655The bread basket was overflowing with crusty carbohydrates just begging to be enjoyed. They brought a baked goat cheese dish out a few too minutes late to enjoy with our bread. This late arrival just meant we all had to enjoy more bread, of course!  IMG_4657 IMG_4660 The calamari, shrimp, and clams in my pasta dish were delicious and tender while the hearty chunks of tomatoes gave a fresh, light flavor to the dish. I barely made a dent in the pasta but luckily I had plenty of people with whom to share.

IMG_4664IMG_4663

I know Bo well enough to know he would order the lamb meatball pasta. He literally orders lamb at any Italian restaurant! The meatballs were smaller than expected but plentiful throughout the dish. Meghann’s pasta was an earthy pesto which won all of us over due to it’s uniqueness and texture.

The rest of our evening was spent walking through an empty Times Square and rocking out to American Idiot.

IMG_4667 IMG_4668  IMG_4670 IMG_4673  IMG_4674Warning, the Broadway show is very well done but NOT light at all! The music, production, costumes, and acting are all top notch but none of us were fans of the actual story line unfortunately.

Good night and have a wonderful Saturday! My morning starts bright and early with a long run through Manhattan and Brooklyn!

A Cupcake Tour of New York City

When my parents told me they were coming to NYC for their first visit in over 10 years, I was beyond excited. They would finally see our home, the city from my vantage point, and taste the delicious flavors we’ve discovered. But, I didn’t know what we’d do all day. They’ve been to the museums, tourist hot spots, and multiple shows.

Therefore, I was elated when my dad gave me a challenge. “I want to taste the best cupcake in NYC!

IMG_4323

Over the past 24 hours we have walked from one end of the city to another in search of the tastiest crumb. So far, we’ve visited the following:

Billy’s Bakery

Magnolia Bakery

Buttercup Bakery

Crumbs Bakery

Ferraras Bakery

Baked by Melissa

and

Balthazaar Bakery.

Our winning cupcake based on taste, texture, and bakery ambience is a tie between Magnolia Bakery and Buttercup Bakery!

Magnolia Bakery was our first stop on the tour! After a two hour walk through Central Park, our legs were happy for the extra seating area and our stomachs were thrilled with the wide selection. Their cupcakes are  traditional cupcake size, but their icing is more bountiful than most. The cake is moist and fragrant. Their butter cream icing tastes as good as it looks. It is soft, rich, and the warm vanilla flavor permeates both the air in the shop and your lips as you lick them in glee. My mom and I shared the Hummingbird Cupcake which is adorned with toasted walnuts. The moist cake is filled with sweet pineapple shreds while the vanilla icing balances the sweetness. My dad devoured Magnolia Bakery’s classic favorite, vanilla vanilla. In one word, he describes it as “WOW.” The simplest of their cupcakes, sometimes simple is best. The swirled thick frosting and moist cake delivers the perfect cupcake experience.

Buttercup Bakery, our other favorite, doesn’t have the same ambience but that shouldn’t be held against it. Smaller and off the beaten path, near the edge of Murray Hill and Midtown East, Buttercup Bakery is a hidden gem. The staff is friendly and humored my dad in his long conversations and inquisitive manner. He chatted about Southern food and the secrets to Buttercup Bakery’s success while my mom and I perused their cookbooks. We finally decided that we’d sample one cupcake and one Southern staple. Their red velvet cupcake is smaller than Magnolia’s but doubles over in cream cheese frosting. Unlike Magnolia, Buttercup understands that the only way to make traditional red velvet cake is when it’s paired with cream cheese icing. The cake is moist and barely crumbles when held to your mouth. The Southern staple we shared was a warm, delicious pecan bar. The bar’s buttery crust was made from shortbread while the filling was a strong brown sugar, Karo, and pecan creation. Hopefully this decadent treat will greet Bo and I when we are home for Thanksgiving since my mom purchased their cookbook after one bite of this bar.

The worst of the bunch was unfortunately our last taste of the evening, Billy’s Bakery. While the bakery had the atmosphere and aroma one would expect, the service was not enthusiastic, passionate, or engaging. When I asked how long Billy’s had been in existence, the girl laughed at me and asked why I cared.

IMG_4504 IMG_4497 IMG_4498 IMG_4500

In addition, 75% of the cupcakes we sampled were stale. Their carrot cupcake was the only redeeming factor, filled with moist raisins, carrot slices and topped with cream cheese frosting. But, their Red Velvet and Vanilla Buttercream were not worth the twelve block walk we took after dinner in search of a delicious final bite.

As my dad said, he can go home to Savannah and describe New York City in one word, “delicious.” Actually, his best quote of the day was, “Walking through NYC by myself was like having unprotected sex!” (To add some context to this comment, my dad navigated his way to the Barbour store while my mom and I had a girls afternoon of shopping and laughter.)

Tasting our Way Through NYC One Bakery at a Time

IMG_4288 It’s a tough job but someone has to make sure that NYC’s bakeries are up to par. These two people were eagerly awaiting our bakery tour of NYC!

IMG_4298 On our way, my dad was attacked by a giant bear at the Central Park Zoo.

IMG_4295 I shared my favorite feature of Central Park Zoo with my parents- the Delacorte Clock.

We took multiple stops for photo opportunities.

IMG_4304IMG_4309 IMG_4310IMG_4314 We watched an undercover taxi cab arrest a guy near Lincoln Center!

IMG_4316 IMG_4318IMG_4328 IMG_4333IMG_4335IMG_4334IMG_4351IMG_4352Thank you Kate’s Paperie for the most fun we’ve had in ages! I love my parents..enough said!

IMG_4357IMG_4358IMG_4363IMG_4368IMG_4369IMG_4367IMG_4374            The bears said hello in Sabon!

IMG_4375 Yes, we went there. We tried bacon, caramel toffee at Vosges in SoHo!

Now, believe it or not, after walking 5 miles throughout Central Park, SoHo, Italian Market, Chelsea, and the Villages we’re off to Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill!
