Running & Greens

Happy Tuesday! I feel like today was book marked on either end by greens and running.

I hope you all had a good day. Instead of taking this week as vacation, I am working from my old office until Friday when we head up to Saratoga Springs for Melissa and Frank’s wedding weekend.

Before heading to the office I headed out to the streets for my first run since the marathon. I headed up Third Avenue and ran 3 miles at a relaxed pace while zoning out. I definitely don’t miss the smell of city garbage piled up on the sidewalks or crowded sidewalks as even at 6am I was dodging in and out of people and trash piles. My legs were a little tight, especially my right hamstring, but otherwise the run felt easy.

It felt so surreal taking the 6 train and my old commute to work this morning. I’m so thankful for this experience to live abroad but I do miss New York City.

I left the office for a quick lunch around 1pm, eager to try Organic Avenue’s new fall menu items. I follow them on social media and immediately added their roasted squash and beet salad to my list of things to try this week. It exceeded my expectations! Per the suggestion of the staff, I drizzled the dressing on my salad as soon as I returned to the office but let it marinate for 10-15 minutes before eating. While the salad is definitely an expensive lunch option, it was a nutritious and filling treat.   Roasted Squash & Beet Salad

Golden beets, roasted shallots, and aromatic fennel come together to create a perfect flavor combination. Hearty kabocha squash, thought to be a good source of beta-carotene, rounds out this salad that captures the essence of the cooler months.

After work I met Jen for another run. Our schedules are a bit different this week and the only time we could manage to meet up was this evening. Since she is a busy mom who fits running and training in between her busy family and work life, I thought that running her plan’s easy 4 miles with her was a perfect way to catch up. It also gave us a chance to enjoy some evening views along the Hudson River and perfect 55 degree weather.

We talked non-stop which made the miles fly! We had so much to catch up on including her marathon training, Staten Island Half Marathon and upcoming travel. I can’t believe that it’s almost been a year since we met! While a great deal has changed over the past year, she is still just as strong and inspiring as ever before. Whether she realized it or not, she gave me some great words of advice today during our run and I’m so thankful for this one on one time we had together.

After the run I spent the next 90 minutes on the massage table at 21st Street Equinox. I hadn’t booked any type of post marathon massage and after today’s 7 miles I knew that my legs would appreciate it and it would help with recovery. Luckily Carlos Blain had a last minute opening. This man worked magic on my legs and back by using a combination of massage therapy, physical therapy stretches and professional strength icy hot. He is a certified physical therapist by training but as his certification from Argentina didn’t transfer when he moved, he is practicing massage therapy in NYC.

Last but not least, I finally tried Juice Press! After hearing about their delicious juices and smoothies from Gia and Theodora this was another item on my list this week. A Turmeric Sports Tonic and The Love of Kale Salad was the perfect dinner tonight while catching up on this week’s Homeland. The turmeric has healing effects while also being a natural immune booster, perfect for my body post marathon. The manager suggested that this would help with my muscle repair and hydration after the deep tissue massage as well. The salad consisted of kale, arugula, tomatoes, raisins, carrots, and quinoa along with a garlic and tahini dressing which also included a hint of mint. Delicious! Why did this open just 3 blocks from our old apartment AFTER we moved?

Overall, today was a pretty perfect day. I hope I continue to have opportunities that bring me back to New York City a few times a year as it’s nice to reconnect with good friends and colleagues while also trying some new restaurants and workouts.

Are you a kale fan? If so, how do you prepare it at home? I need some recipe suggestions so I can keep the love alive in Geneva!

Zeel Massage On Demand

Happy Friday! How was your week?

Bo and I are currently en route to Cincinnati where we are spending the weekend with our good friends Ryan and Amy who recently moved there from Seattle. You may remember that we visited them out in Seattle late last Summer.

Our weekend plans include celebrating, running in a small 5k race, touring the area, and relaxing together. I have traveled to Cincinnati at least 20 times over the past 7 years since joining Procter & Gamble so it amazes me that some how Bo has never been before!

Bo and I decided it was time for us to each take a break this week and thank our bodies with deep tissue massages. Normally we both love Equinox massages but unfortunately our work schedules didn’t allow for that this week.

Luckily, a new to me service, Zeel Massage on Demand, was able to help!

Zeel is a website and phone app which allows you to book a same- day, in –home massage with a few clicks! As you can see above, you just choose your preferred massage type, masseuse gender, duration, and then provide any specifications such as reason for the massage or special requests.

A few Zeel On Demand highlights:

  • All our therapists are vetted and licensed.
  • Top-quality massages in the privacy of your own home, on your schedule.
  • Book and get massage the same day, no need to book ahead.
  • Zeel confirms appointments within 15 minutes and can send a massage therapist to you in as little as an hour.
  • Choose 60 or 90 minute massages, relaxing Swedish or invigorating deep tissue massages, and a male or female therapist.
  • Requests can be made between 8 am and 10 pm 7 days a week.

Within minutes of hopping on the site I was able to easily book a massage for both Bo and myself.  After booking the massage I received a text message confirming the time, my address, the exact cost including tip and tax, along with the massage therapists name. If interested you can even click on their name to see their credentials!

Bo and I both had an amazing experience with Zeel! Our therapists (Ivan Ivanov and Prisila Jacobs) were both very professional, arrived five minutes ahead of time to set up their table, and focused the deep tissue techniques on the areas that needed it most! For those of you who are wondering, the price for a 60 minute massage ($159.25 in Manhattan and $147 in Brooklyn,Queens, or Bronx) is about the same that we paid at Equinox considering that it includes gratuity and taxes! In addition, we were able to take advantage of a first time special code for $50 off!

Do you want to give Zeel Massage on Demand a try? Use the promotion code BEAR50 to get $50 off your first 60 or 90 minute massage!

Have you ever had an in-house massage? Thoughts?

Equissage: Equinox’s New Massage Service

If you’re a frequent reader or follow me on Twitter, then you may know that I love massages. There is no denying the healing power of touch or the instant calm that over takes my body the minute I touch the warm massage table.

In fact, Melissa has been known to make fun of me for what she deems my massage obsession. I don’t consider it an obsession but much to my wallet’s disappointment, I enjoy a massage an average of once per month. My experiences have ranged over the years, ranging from the University of Georgia health center, 3000 BC Spa in Philadelphia, Glow Spa in Savannah, and a multitude of different spots in New York including Equinox and Exhale.

My worst experience to date was a Groupon gone bad somewhere between Canal Street and my pride. Needless to say, the massage only lasted five minutes before I high tailed it out of there due to fear of catching a disease or seeing a rat.  Since this experience, I’ve realized the importance of checking out Yelp and other reference sites before booking a massage or spa service, regardless the discount.

Luckily, a few weeks ago, Schuyler, the Spa Coordinator at 54th Street Equinox aided my guilty pleasure with a discounted massage session. He is not only their coordinator but also a certified wellness coach, licensed massage therapist, and Energy Rebalancer! I knew I was in for a treat after reading his initial email. They gave me the opportunity to experience their brand new new massage technique, Equissage.

Have you tried Equissage yet? It’s our newest service – combining a postural assessment with multiple massage techniques to create a completely customized treatment. It will be the perfect complement to your personal training work. The Equissage is available in 60 and 90 minute sessions in order to meet your specific needs and time constraints.

The words customized, multiple techniques, and complement alone sold me on the new service. One of my biggest pet peeves is that you have to choose which massage you’re in the mood for weeks in advance when you book a service. What if you arrive and decide you need a relaxing Swedish massage instead of a deep tissue? Often times, you can’t change your mind. But, this service makes all of that possible while also allowing you to experiment with different techniques that you’d most likely never try otherwise.

Since I opted to take advantage of the massage the day of my long run, my massage was focused primarily on the muscles affected by running. My 90 minute session passed far too quickly but I enjoyed every minute, even the deep tissue portion.

Schuyler started the treatment with aromatherapy in order to relax and calm my body. The eucalyptus essential oil is a natural way to enhance deep breathing while the lavender relaxed my entire body. In addition to the essential oils, he also incorporated Bio Freeze into the leg work. A pain relieving gel including menthol and natural botanicals, it left my muscles relaxed and pain free.

During the massage, I asked Schuyler to discuss the different techniques he was using and the reason he incorporated each one. While I’m sure he wished I’d just fall asleep, he humored me and thoroughly explained each and every one!

  • Kinesthetic Awareness through Rocking: This technique, which was new to me, was used in the beginning to activate my parasympathetic nervous system. This calmed my body and made my muscles more aware of touch.
  • Swedish: These strokes were used to calm the muscles as they were still quite tight from the morning run and retaining toxins.
  • Deep tissue: Painful as always, the deep tissue portion was used to target certain areas along my IT band and shoulders where I carry a great deal of tension and therefore had developed multiple adhesions.
  • Hydrotherapy: He applied heat packs to loosen my back muscles and improve circulation which helps move lactic acid out of the system.

During the 90 minute session, Schuyler was also able to help me understand why I sleep with my legs spread each night, much to Bo’s chagrin.  When I increased my mileage during last year’s marathon training, my hips grew very tight. Since my internal hip rotators are weak and my external hip rotators are short, it’s most comfortable for me to sleep with my hips splayed open. It is my body’s way of adapting to the tightness. Since this has been identified, my personal trainer has incorporated hip strengtheners into each personal training session!

I still can’t believe how much I learned in 90 minutes!  Not only was this a relaxing session which incorporated multiple techniques, but it also left me craving another session. It also reinforced a few of the things I’ve discussed previously on the blog.

  • A massage is like yoga, in order to truly be present and enjoy the moment, you need to stop making to do lists in your head.
  • Stretching for two minutes doesn’t stretch, lengthen, or relax your muscles after an hour of spin class or other physical abuse.
  • Massage therapy will in time increase my flexibility.
  • Ice therapy can be a wonderful at home massage technique to balance foam rolling and stretching.

If you’re in the New York City area and would like to enjoy your own Equissage session, you can receive a complimentary upgrade through the end of August! Just leave a comment or email me for more information.

*While Equinox provided a discount for my Equissage service, the review and opinions are my own.
