The Weekend Comes Early: Thirsty Thursday

Happy Thursday! I don’t know about y’all but I’m ready for the weekend. Luckily, my weekend just started! I’m heading down to Charleston tomorrow to spend a long weekend with my some of my college roommates and sorority sisters down on Edisto Island, South Carolina. Unfortunately, Bo can’t make the trip down with me due to work, but I’ll have the opportunity to spend time with the rest of the girls and their husbands celebrating babies, engagements, and memories!

It’s been a year since I reunited with most of these girls and I’m so excited I could scream!

I have a lot to do between now and tomorrow morning when I fly out, bright and early, including pack and get even more nervous about my 20 miler. My running coach only has 17 miles on my Saturday schedule but, I like to make my coach proud and I like to push myself. Therefore, I’ve made it a personal goal to conquer 20 miles on Saturday. I have awesome running friends down in Edisto with me who first motivated me to start running six years ago. I figure that the fun discussions we’ll have, ocean breeze, flat streets, and new scenery will make it more bearable too! Now if I can just remember to apply sunscreen to my calves so I don’t have a horrible calf sleeve tan line come Sunday.

Before my vacation started, I had a jam packed day trying to squeeze in everything I needed to finish before putting up my out of office message.

Lauren and I met for our Thursday training session which has now become the arms and abs killing session. Each Thursday we barely touch my legs due to my marathon training but instead focus the whole session on my biggest trouble areas. The hard work is finally starting to show as we’ve been able to decrease the weight used in the pull up assist each week and increase the weight and repetitions we’re using in other combination exercises.

I also enjoyed some delicious meals today which kept my snacking at bay.

Breakfast was quick and messy, a crunchy cinnamon oats paired with a trenta Starbucks unsweetened iced green tea.

Per Lauren’s suggestion, I substituted my Soy Chip and Baked Lays obsession with a whole grain roll during lunch along side a beet heavy salad.

IMG_4652 (640x478) IMG_4651 (640x478) During the day, I tried to stay hydrated by drinking more water. My body still feels a bit off after last week’s travel and my heavy sodium meals haven’t helped. I’m in love with the new Crystal Light that I was sent to sample.

When I first started losing weight, I was a Crystal Light addict, often going through multiple packs a day. But, then the artificial sweetener headaches and cravings came and I cut it out almost cold turkey. I was hesitant when Crystal Light contacted me but with the word pure in the name, I figured I’d give it a try.

Crystal Light Pure contains no artificial sweeteners, flavors or preservatives. Instead, it is sweetened with sugar and TruviaTM, an all-natural, no-calorie sweetener derived from the stevia plant. This also means that while it isn’t calorie free like the traditional Crystal Light, you can have the delicious AND natural flavor for only 15 calories per serving.

I highly recommend this product if you’re not a fan of plain water or are trying to wean yourself off sodas. This little packet of flavor turned today into Thirsty Thursday, helping me drink over 100 ounces of water from 8am-7pm when I left the office!

Last but not least, before I go pack, I want to thank each of you all for reading each day. When I started my blog, over a year and a half ago, it was a place for me to track my marathon training and a way to keep in touch with my family. Now, it has evolved into my favorite hobby and provided me with amazing opportunities, friends, and memories. I was honored and so humbled by Fitness Magazine’s shout out today on their FitStop blog. I also have to give Caitlin mad props for that wonderful picture they featured!

Efficient and Effective

This morning I enjoyed an amazing 40 minutes on the treadmill. Normally known as the dreadmill by many, on which time crawls, today was unlike any sweat session I’ve experienced before.

It was efficient, effective, and time flew!  IMG_4181 (640x478)

At first I was intimidated by today’s workout plan calling for a 2 mile warm-up, 6 1 minute “up beats” followed by a 2 min jog in between and a cool down.

IMG_4180 (478x640)

I should have done this workout last week but I missed it. Therefore, I’m a week behind on speed training and new it was now or never to jump on the band wagon. I was short on time so chose to focus on the warm up versus the cool down since I don’t want to risk injury. The final numbers weren’t too shabby and I was still able to leave feeling accomplished.

The the great thing about having a plan and sticking to it is that each day there is a prescribed workout and a box I can check.

Time/Distance Pace
1 mile warm-up 6.0 on treadmill

This great workout also left me craving healthy and delicious foods all day!

IMG_4183 (640x478)This morning’s breakfast was a baked protein infused bowl of oats made with 1/2 cup oats, 3/4 cup water, 1/2 scoop vanilla protein, and a banana.

Lunch was a delicious bowl of soup and salad from Pret! I forgot how much I liked their soup and salads!

IMG_4185 (640x478) Doesn’t this look amazing?

IMG_4184 (640x478) But, the best part of my office food was my afternoon snack!  This was the first truly juicy, delicious peach I’ve bought all summer after 7 fruit stand attempts! Each peach I’ve purchased previously was only half worthy; the rest dry or over ripe.

IMG_4188 (640x478) Last, but not least, I wore my favorite summer dress today! I’ve only worn it a few times this summer but each time I wear it I get more compliments than I can imagine! Even better is the fact that my mom and I found it at the Polo Ralph Lauren outlet on the clearance rack when I was home in April!

Making The Best of It

It felt wonderful to push the door open at 6pm and see this lovely sight!

IMG_4160 (640x478)

I’ve been gone for five days and have missed Bo and some of the comforts of home. While the trip was wonderful, there is nothing like home.

This weekend, I spent Friday and Saturday in wedding mode! They did an absolutely wonderful job planning the events including the rehearsal dinner, bridal party prep the day of, the reception, and even the after party!  Instead of letting my cancelled flight upset me, I made the best of it and enjoyed some extra time with the group!

There was an array of healthy breakfast options, including this adorable fruit bowl, waiting for us at Lauren’s house. She organized two local hair dressers, who actually graduated with her from high school, to do everyone’s hair at her house. It worked out perfectly and allowed us to spend time catching up together before the big wedding!

The Ceremony & Reception

Held at the gorgeous Taft Museum of Art, the wedding was picture perfect. The temperature was in the low 80’s and the sun was shining down on the couple as they said “I do.” Every detail was planned perfectly including the jazz cocktail hour after the wedding, tent seating for 190 people, and the DJ who kept the party going until 11pm!

Cincinnati Reds Game

Yesterday, due to my rescheduled flight, I was able to score a seat in their group seats at the Reds game. A huge sports fan, Casey organized  group tickets for anyone who was staying in town the afternoon. It was a great way to reminisce about the previous night’s events and socialize with the group in a more intimate setting since there were only 20 or so people in our group. The weather was gorgeous and the Reds won in the 14th inning!

One Final Run

Lauren’s matron of honor, Chrissy, was sweet enough to meet me bright and early this morning for one final run! She and her husband arrived around 7:20 ready to take me on a hilly running tour of Northern Kentucky. Our route was 3.8 miles long and included a few rolling hills and two intense inclines which intimidated the hell out of me. I told Chrissy from the beginning that I had two goals for this morning’s run: run the entire time, including the hills and keep below a 10 minute pace.

This elevation map confuses me a bit as the final 1.5 miles were the steepest, versus the beginning. Maybe I’m just doing something wrong with the elevation map, but you get the point! Less than 40 minutes later we had accomplished our mission and were ready for showers and breakfast before heading to the airport.

I think Theodora would be proud of this morning’s breakfast which was enjoyed outside a local Starbucks. The unsweetened ice green tea was a welcome change from the coffee I sipped all weekend and the egg white and turkey bacon sandwich far exceeded my expectations.

IMG_4148 (640x478) IMG_4147 (640x478) I listened to my legs and sported these hot shoes for the journey home instead of Rainbows or Jack Rogers.

IMG_4159 (478x640)

These comfortable and supportive shoes along with smooth layovers and a healthy lunch kept me smiling all afternoon!

I’m back in New York City where the sun is still shining, the sky is blue, and there is barely a puddle in the street.

Question: What are your tips for enjoying a wedding when your flying solo? This goes for single and non-single people who happen to attend a wedding on their own.
