My Favorite Healthy Travel Snacks

Over the past two years, there have been weeks when Bo or I would fly four times in a single week. The constant commute between London and Geneva, weekend adventures and flights back to the United States did a number on each of our waist lines. Without realizing it, one can easily do damage to the healthy eating and workouts enjoyed at home.  Whether it is the complimentary wine and beer served on European flights, the limited airport food options or the sodium and preservative filled meals, flying can easily be anything but healthy.

The good news is that with some simple planning, flying can be far healthier and leave you ready to explore the new city or head to business meetings energized and fresh versus battling a food hangover and bloated. You have no excuse to show up for a flight unprepared or complain about the lack of choice on planes or at the airport. You don’t HAVE to eat the airplane food. In fact, these days, Bo and I typically say no thank you to the food options and only go for the sparkling water. Here’s a glimpse of the carry on bag I brought with me for today’s flights from Geneva to Savannah.

Before we get to our five favorite in-flight snacks, here are a few tips for those of you who don’t fly as often.

  • Yes, you can bring food with you through security both in the USA and abroad.
  • You can use a cooler as one of your carry-on bags, which is especially convenient if you are traveling with kids or a group.
  • Make sure that the food is in a small container, smaller than 3.4 oz
  • It is always a good idea to put food in clear containers such as plastic bags or Tupperware.
  • If you’re flying internationally, you will most likely have to throw away any leftover food before entering customs in your destination.
  • If you’re worried about something, search for it on the TSA website to make sure it is allowed.
  • Avoid foods that have a strong smell. No one wants to sit next to someone eating tuna fish sandwiches.
  • Bring an empty water bottle with you so you can fill it once you are through security. Make sure to fill it at a water fountain before boarding the flight as many flight attendants won’t refill the bottle due to lack of water quantity, especially on long flights.

Best Plane Snacks

While we tend to travel with different snacks each time, here is a round up of our favorite snacks when we travel. If we don’t have time to pack a small bag of snacks before our flight, we get to the airport early and go to Pret-A-Manger or another healthy on-the-go restaurant and grab plain yogurt, fruit, popcorn and salads. Healthy food isn’t always easy to find but thus far, the Delta terminal in the Los Angeles airport is the only place I have not been able to find at least SOME healthy snacks.

  • Air popped popcorn
  • Cashews, almonds and other mixed nuts
  • Apples, bananas or clementines
  • Chopped vegetables & a small container of hummus
  • KIND bars or your favorite homemade nut based bar or energy ball
  • Greek yogurt + homemade granola
  • Sandwich (Build your favorite sandwich but make sure to leave the tomatoes off as they will leave it soggy after a few hours.)
  • Mini Babybel cheese
  • Salad with less than 3.4 oz dressing in a separate container
  • Eggland’s Best pre-peeled hard boiled eggs or homemade pre-peeled hard boiled eggs

4 Sites Which Make Working Out Easier

How was your day?

Bo and I are running around the house trying finish packing our bags for tomorrow’s trip. Tomorrow we head off to St. Petersburg, Russia!

In honor of us leaving for another trip, during which we plan to stick to our workout plans, I figured I’d take this opportunity to answer one of the questions I’m asked most frequently:

How do I workout while traveling? I won’t have a gym where I’m staying."

All too frequently, people think that they need a gym to stick with their training plan or workout routine. Many people, especially those people who have newly resolved to work out daily, are easily intimidated by change. They worry that they won’t be able to squeeze in a good workout just because they don’t have a gym. Don’t get me wrong, access to gyms or studios makes things easier. In fact I love using hotel gyms or trying boutique workout classes like Mile High Run Club when visiting new cities. But, in the world of AirBnB, business travel, budget travel, or traveling to foreign cities, this may not be an option, due to either time constraints or accommodations.

So, the next time you are worried about working out while traveling, check out these sites. These are the sites I frequently look to for inspiration as they include many great body weight workouts which don’t require anything other than a few feet of space!

PBFingers – For the past year, I’ve sworn by Julie’s awesome workouts that she creates almost weekly. She has over 50 different workouts on her site, but her 20- minute hotel room workout is one of my favorites! Check out her circuit workout page for many different workouts which include a mix of body weight and gym workouts, perfect for any fitness level!

DailyBurn – A streaming workout site featuring elite trainers, including Bob Harper, DailyBurn brings the workout to you! Their array of workouts, ranging from yoga to intense, intervals means that you can get a great workout, wherever you are! I love Anja’s workouts as most of them are short and sweet, helping me break a crazy sweat within minutes. Don’t believe me? Sign up for your free 30-day trial today!

Sarah Fit –  I love Sarah because her blog is a refreshing breath of reality in the realm of fitness bloggers. She admits to drinking or eating too much while on vacation but quickly gets back on track, without blaming herself. Her YouTube channel and blog help thousands of people realize that they can get fit and healthy in a dorm or hotel room. Her no gym workouts are perfect for your next trip, while her videos will make them easy to follow and understand.

Nike Training Club – With this convenient app you can choose your workout type – yoga, pilates, drills, running, or high intensity and then choose your level. While I’ve used it far less than many of my other friends, there’s no doubt the over 100 workouts will make it easy for you to get inspired, wherever you are.

Healthy Travel: Balancing Workouts + Food

I am so happy it’s finally Friday!! The sun is shining here in Cincinnati today and the weather forecast for New York City is beautiful for the weekend!

We don’t have many plans other than to celebrate a friends birthday and while Bo is scuba diving on Saturday I’m going to spend the day running and enjoying the gorgeous weather with Katie while also finally checking Balthazar off my brunch bucket list!

It’s easy to say that I want to stay healthy during business travel but it isn’t always easy to practice what we preach. Luckily, this week it was easier than I expected!

I think the trick to staying healthy this week was balance and having the time. The training that I was in all week finished each day by 5pm which allowed plenty of time to catch up on work. This meant that each evening I was able to enjoy a relaxed dinner with co-workers or friends while still getting to bed in time to wake up for a morning workout. Here’s a glimpse at my workouts for the week along with some of the restaurants that I was able to try!

Notice a trend here? I ate out each night but I balanced it with very healthy meals during the day and a daily workout that pushed me whether that meant lifting heavy or running fast.

Overall, it was a great week of travel though I’m looking forward to being home. Too bad I don’t fly out until late tonight! For those of you who get to Cincinnati, like Emily, I will be doing another post on the Cincinnati food scene as I was amazed by all the new restaurants this week! So delicious!

To those folks running and racing Flying Pig, New Jersey, or any other race this weekend GOOD LUCK!
