Healthy Living Summit Day #2

Yesterday was one of those jam packed day that leave you exhausted and energized at the same time!

I woke up for the 2nd time this week before 5am in order to get in a morning run without missing out on any fun. A small group of us met at 5am in the Hyatt hotel lobby to head out for 13+ miles before Healthy Living Summit kicked off. It was earlier than we originally planned but we wanted to have plenty of time to shower, stretch and eat breakfast before the sessions.

I had the pleasure of running with Valerie, who was attending Healthy Living Summit on behalf of her company, Porter Novelli, and participating in the Blogging with Brands session with a few of us bloggers Saturday morning. It turns out that Valerie is my dear college friend Robin’s best friend back in Washington, DC! It truly is a small world and it was so fun to connect the dots this weekend and finally get to know the lovely lady of whom I’ve heard so much over the years from Robin.

We kept a great pace for the first few miles along the lovely Charles River, chatting and enjoying the morning scenery. Unfortunately Valerie wasn’t feeling too hot so we parted ways around mile 7 and I continued along the river on my own, jamming to my music and missing my rowing days as I watched skulls glide past me on the river. Around mile 9 it started to drizzle which was wonderfully refreshing and just added to the perfect running weather, cooler than my normal sticky NYC runs and a scenic change.

After a quick shower and a breakfast beyond my wildest dreams, thanks to Wild Harvest and their blogger recipe competition, I was fueled and ready to begin a day of learning from fellow bloggers, brands, fitness groups, and experts from some of our favorite brands and PR firms!

The morning kicked off with a get to know you ice breaker in small groups of 15 or so people. It was so much fun to get to know the new and old faces alike over such topics as AIM screen names and favorite books. In case you were wondering, my answer to the below question is Anne of Green Gables and The Bible.

After the opening we had a chance to break a sweat with the local Crossfit gang and learn the basics behind the workout and some of their favorite moves, such as air squats and jumps. There were over 150 people in the tented space lined up in rows so the instructors could monitor form and give pointers. They had an awesome soundtrack for the workout and were so upbeat that you couldn’t help but smile while you squated low.

The next session I attended was Holding a Virtual Challenge, hosted by the lovely Amanda from Run to the Finish! I’m going to provide details around this session in this week’s Tuesday Tips but let me just say that I learned so much and was inspired to do my own challenge in the near future.

Next up, was the moment I’d been worrying about all morning, Blogging with Brands, a session that brought together three brand and PR aficionados (Kelly Olexa, Valerie, and Laura Stanton along with three bloggers (Theodora, Anne, and myself)  to share tips and thoughts about working with brands.

I was honored when Lauren asked me to join the panel and looked forward to not only contributing but also learn from everyone participating. Theodora did a great job recapping her thoughts in today’s post. (picture via Theodora)

hls_brand_talk.jpg

While we didn’t have a formal presentation, Lauren prepared questions for each person to answer and then we took Q&A from the crowd.

It was great because almost every topic allowed for both a blogger and brand to share their thoughts which exposed the audience to multiple opinions and schools of thought. I think the live tweeting summarized the highlights better than I ever could since the things that are Tweeted tend to be the most noteworthy and effective. Here are the highlights from the #HLSBrandtalk twitter feed. imageimageimageimageimage

The session went wonderfully and our bundle of nerves was over faster than anyone wanted! The packed house had great questions and I can only hope that they gained at least a few useful tips.

After our session we were able to laugh again and enjoy a delicious lunch which proved that the Hyatt really knows how to cater for large groups. The meals this year blew the socks off all of us! Tender chicken that was served moist versus dry. Dishes served in Le Crueset? Amazing flavors?

The rest of the afternoon was spent in more sessions and networking with brands until around 5 when we couldn’t wait to toast Meghann and the gang for all their hard work! (bottom pic via Gretchen!)

While the HLS sessions were done, our day wasn’t over. I’ll be back tomorrow to share our epic dinner at Evoo thanks to the folks at Chobani!

Hope you had a great weekend!

A Blogging Journey

Almost two years ago, I attended my first blog conferences. I had no idea what to expect and I barely knew anyone in the blogging world. In case you’re new let me give you a brief blogging history.

  • May 2009: Meet Melissa who then convinces me to start blogging about balancing life in NYC while planning a wedding, starting a new job, making new friends, and trying to learn a new city.
  • July 2009: Get way too overwhelmed with blogging and wedding planning. Therefore I unfortunately take a blogging break.
  • January 2010: Decide that the honeymoon is over and it’s time to get back in shape and focused. Figure that starting to blog again will be a great positive influence.
  • January 2010-July 2010: Blog casually, 3-4 times per week, while starting to participate in more blogger meet ups in NYC.

IMG_6121.JPGIMG_4915.jpgIMG_0100 (600x450)

  • August 2010: Attend BlogHer 2010 in New York City and Healthy Living Summit in ChicagoMy life as a blogger changes overnight after spending a long lunch talking with Kath, Sabrina and Tina.  Realize that my blog will never grow if I don’t put into it what I want to get out of it. The group convinces me to start blogging daily. Also am amazed that these three women spend the entire lunch talking with me, a stranger, and sharing so many great ideas and insights.
  • September 2010- Current: I do my best to balance my career and blogging, aiming to blog daily and share my life with my friends, family and readers.

I’ve had amazing opportunities along the way to not only meet other bloggers but to work with some wonderful organizations like Fitfluential, partner with brands that I believe in and love such as New Balance or REFUEL Chocolate Milk, participate in a 32 hour relay race with a blogging team, and more.

But, at the end of the day, it’s the friendships that have kept me blogging. Maybe it’s the shared interests or the accessibility, but many of my blogger friends have evolved into my closest friends over the past year. I can’t imagine my life in New York City without Theodora or Melissa. Both friends I met through blogging, they’ve truly been my rocks. Meghann on the other hand, though over a thousand miles away, has become one of my biggest motivators, a running role model, ski friend, and soon a bride whose side I’ll happily stand by in January!  Even the larger group of bloggers from across the US with whom I’ve bonded have enjoyed girls weekends away, supported each other after a tough race or emotional post, pinged back and forth on Google Chat with questions and ideas, and served as each other’s moral support on a daily basis. Making our lives an open book is a decision that we made years ago when we started blogging but that doesn’t always mean it’s easy.

I am so thankful that I attended both BlogHer and Healthy Living Summit back in 2010. Each conference, valuable in different ways, prompted me to take blogging more seriously and evolve it into more than just a casual hobby. Since tonight marks the beginning of Healthy Living Summit and I have the honor to be speaking on a panel again this year, let me take a minute to share with you my Top 3 reasons why I would recommend attending HLS to any blogger or reader.

  1. You will go home with at least one new friend with whom you will develop a close relationship. It’s inevitable. For the most part, people who attend these conferences are looking to develop new connections and therefore it’s like one long weekend blogger/reader dating game. You have the opportunity to put names with faces, interact in stress free, casual settings, and experience an awesome city all at the same time. My first year I had the chance to get to know Meghann and Jes quite well. Last year my roommates Anne, Theodora, and Gretchen fill my memories including our late night chat sessions and early mornings.
  2. It is the perfect place to learn. Whether you want to take better pictures, conquer marathon training fears, enjoy a new workout class, learn more about a brand, or take your blogging to the next level you’ll have the opportunity to do these things and more at Healthy Living Summit.
  3. There is no better way to discover a city than with bloggers! When you explore a city with bloggers, you are promised to have your adventures captured on film and blogs so your memories last forever. The Friday night cocktail party is often in a great location that allows you to party it up in style while enjoying delicious food and cocktails.  There is no better way to get to known people than jammed in a photo booth posting for silly pictures. And last but not least,  this year, like last year, I will be helping organize an early morning run/walk which allows you to explore the streets of Boston in great company.

IMG_1585.JPG

So there you have it! I’m always a comment or email away if you have questions about Healthy Living Summit or BlogHer! I look forward to seeing all 199 of y’all in August!

*Note: I should also mention that my blog was hacked in February 2011 and therefore I eventually have to manually repost posts from before then back on my blog from Wellsphere where they were all saved. It is a long arduous process and therefore I’ve only done top posts thus far including restaurant reviews, travel, marathon training, and race recaps.

Healthy Living Summit 2011 Recap

I can’t believe Healthy Living Summit 2011 has already come to an end.

IMG_1917 (640x480)After checking into our room at the Philadelphia Downtown Marriot, Gretchen and I headed straight IMG_1874 (640x480)IMG_1875 (640x480)to El Vez for a lunch hosted by the awesome Wellsphere team. This Stephen Starr Tex Mex establishment was conveniently located on 13th street, just a few blocks from our hotel.

The shrimp enchiladas were hands down my favorite dish ordered, though the guacamole was also quite delicious!

It was wonderful getting to know the team better and spending time with some wonderful new blogger friends!

IMG_1904 (640x480)

IMG_1902 (640x480)The official Healthy Living Summit festivities started Friday evening with the cocktail party. Located in Reading Terminal Market, this year’s location gave attendees a taste of a Philadelphia landmark while also allowing for more space than last year’s location. This meant that there was plenty of space for mingling, laughing, and photo booth fun! I was elated to see so many new and familiar faces alike!

Yes, we were a very fun group of roommates for the weekend! Playing with props before the photo booth session with Anne, Gretchen, and Theodora! (photo via Anne)

IMG_1915 (640x480) Photo booth fun with Anne, Leslie, Meghann, and Melissa!IMG_1921 (480x640) IMG_1926 (640x480) I had a great time getting to know Ashley, Lisa, Caitlin, and Claire!

After the cocktail party, Theodora and I ventured out for more food since we had 14 miles coming up bright and early. Paulie’s Pizza was a drunk girls dream even though we were both stone sober.

IMG_1927 (640x480) IMG_1928 (640x480)Five short hours later, we were up and ready for the Healthy Living Summit long run!  My exhausted eyes and brain were thankful that I didn’t have to think about my long run fuel since I planned ahead with a packed sandwich thin.

IMG_4049 (640x478) (640x478) By 5am, there were over 20 other runners downstairs ready to enjoy a long run along Kelly Drive.

IMG_1585.JPG

For some reason, they all trusted me with directions and last minute instructions. It felt pretty amazing to be party of such a supportive group this early in the morning. Last year I was too scared to run with the large long run group but this year I was organizing it!

The first few miles of the run sped by since I was so excited to have new running friends. I chatted with a few different runners as we navigated the dark Philadelphia streets including Kelly, Meghann, Monica, Ben, and Evan.

IMG_1589.JPG

By the end of the second mile I decided it was time to slow down and run with my normal run buddy, Theodora. Mile 3-7 flew by as we chatted with some of the other runners, enjoyed the sights, and talked about our presentation.

But, by the time we reached the turn around point we were bored, dehydrated, sweaty, and alone. The group naturally broke into different pace groups and we were smack in the middle. We continued on though, only walking 2-3 times for 30 seconds each time. I had one stomach scare after trying a new Accelerade gel, but was luckily able to keep going.  Running into Evan two miles away from the hotel also helped as we were able to catch up with him and hear about his college life!photo (12) (478x640)

Fourteen miles and 2 hours and 26 minutes later I was thankful for a quick ice bath compliments of the hotel ice machine. DSCF7939 (640x480)

There was no time to rest and relax since the sessions started only an hour later! By 9am, I was dressed and ready for a day of networking, learning, and eating!

The morning flew by as we learned the importance of mantras from Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD and how to Write a Better Recipe, taught by Stepfanie Romine.  I can’t wait to share some of the things I learned during Stepfanie’s session as it was definitely an epiphany moment for me. I apologize for all my recipe posts to date and will in fact be going in to update them based on what Stepfanie taught us. IMG_1995

At 11:30, Theodora, Cynthia, and I took the stage for our presentation filled with nervous butterflies but excited for this wonderful opportunity.

IMG_1952 (640x480)

The group was attentive, asked wonderful questions, and seemed to enjoy the topic!

My growling stomach was ready for the famous Healthy Living Summit lunch, always known for fresh, delicious, and wonderful food which delights both vegan and omnivores alike. I think Theodora’s photo below captures my noon time feelings perfectly: starving and exhausted.

I’m going to do a few separate posts regarding the highlights from each session at HLS, but if you have the chance, go go www.spokeo.com. This is a very eye opening and scary sight showing just how much anyone can find about you and your family.

By 4pm, our table decided it was happy hour, compliments of one of Kath’s blog readers.

IMG_1983 (640x480) IMG_1984 (640x480) IMG_1986 (640x480)We continued to toast once the conference ended for the afternoon during happy hour at my favorite Philadelphia wine bar, Vintage.

As you can see from the below pictures, Anne plays two roles in pictures: professional photo bomber or photogenic beauty.

IMG_2000 (640x480) The table shared two appetizers, fried calamari and goat cheese, before heading to the next bar.

IMG_2008 (640x480)IMG_2009 (640x480)

Our next stop was Time, a new to me whiskey and absinthe bar at 13th and Sansom.

IMG_2015 (640x480)IMG_2010 (640x480) Kath and I were ecstatic to see that they had a pumpkin beer on the menu! (photo via Kath)

IMG_0100 (600x450)

Katie meanwhile was far more adventurous and chose the absinthe! You’d think we were a crowd of frat boys the way we were cheering her on during her first taste of absinthe!

IMG_2014 (640x480) At 9pm, a group of us finally made our way back to El Vez, where they graciously had a table for 12 ready and waiting.

Words can’t explain the hilarity that ensued with the group over multiple margaritas and lots of laughter.

IMG_2016 (640x480) IMG_2017 (640x480) IMG_2018 (640x480) IMG_2020 (640x480) Below from left, Katie, Lisa, me, Ashley, Claire, Gretchen, Caitlin, and Beth.

IMG_2022 (640x480)This morning, the conference ended with a 3 mile run/walk to the Rocky steps at the Philadelphia Art Museum and breakfast. IMG_2023 (640x480)

We enjoyed some wonderful sights along the way, including the Franklin Institute and Love Statue.

IMG_2024 (480x640) IMG_2025 (480x640) IMG_2027 (640x480)IMG_2031 (640x480)IMG_2032 (640x480) We posed for a quick group picture before heading over to the steps. It was wonderful such a large group came out for the morning walk as it was a great chance to catch up with familiar faces like Heather, Amelia, and Brittany.

IMG_2029 (640x480) IMG_2034 (480x640) IMG_2037 (640x480)Heather even inspired me to run back to the hotel with her so we could continue talking. The 1.8 mile sprint was exactly what my legs needed to shake out the soreness after yesterday’s run! Thanks Heather for pushing me that extra bit!

After the sweaty run, a Quaker sponsored breakfast was the perfect way to end the conference. I caught up with Kath, Sam, and others while devouring oatmeal and a delicious new yogurt.

IMG_2038 (640x480) IMG_2040 (640x480)But, since all good things must come to an end, we all parted ways at 11am.

Heather was kind enough to drive Theodora and I all the way back to the last NJ Transit station so we were able to spend quality time chatting in the car versus being cramped on the train. Spending time with them discussing the weekend just left me even more passionate about Healthy Living Summit, blogging, and the amazing friends I’ve made along the way.

Question: If you attended HLS, what is one thing you’d like to see again or included next year? If you didn’t attend, what was the best part of your weekend?
