Yoga at the Great Lawn

A few weeks ago, I received an email blast from Flavor Pill

Help us break a world record! Register now to join 10,000 people on Central Park’s Great Lawn, all downward-dogging at once. Yogi Elena Brower leads the class; comedian/beatboxer/musician Reggie Watts performs, along with sonic healer 13 Hands, slam poet Buddy Wakefield, drum/dance troupe O’Nkosi Rhythms, cellist Garth Stevenson, and yogic bassist Wah!. Each mat is yours to take home (thanks, JetBlue), along with a bevy of goodies from SmartWater, Alternative Apparel, and Chico Bag

This is a perfect example of the fun NYC events I love participating in and therefore I quickly registered hoping I’d be one of the 10,000 lucky participants given a pass.

Fastforward a few weeks and as luck would have it, I was offered VIP tickets and a few for fellow bloggers and readers. While I don’t consider myself a VIP of any sort I’ve never been one to look a gift horse in the mouth and gladly accepted.

After posting some tweets about the opportunity, I ended up heading to the Great Lawn today with Theodora, Lauren, Jess, and Rebecca. Blog Pictures 2010 256

After meeting at 84th and Park, we headed towards the VIP tent per our instructions. We had all read on Twitter or the news that the lines were crazy. We thought it may be an exaggeration. How could the lines be so bad when they were PLANNING the event for 10,000 people? Well, it was no exaggeration. Everything Katherine, Dori, Missy, and Jes had tweeted was true. As we turned the corner we saw it!

Yes, that is the FRONT of the line! Luckily we were quickly escorted to a table where we received the “orange ticket” which would allow us Blog Pictures 2010 248front row yoga placement, stage access, massages, swag, and more.

Blog Pictures 2010 251The first table had great Yoga at The Great Lawn t-shirts compliments of Alternative Earth t-shirts. The t-shirt is super comfortable and soft even though they are XL.

Blog Pictures 2010 252The next table featured a green swag bag. The bag  is a reusable grocery bag made by Chico Bag which even has a nifty pocket that it FOLDS into when you’re not using it!

As soon as we walked past the tables there were tons of cameras on this lovely yogi so I figured I’d snap a picture of her as well. Later, I found out that she was the woman leading the yoga.

Blog Pictures 2010 250There were three different tents set up for press and VIP bracelet holders. Under the tents were barrels of Vitamin Water

Blog Pictures 2010 254 Blog Pictures 2010 255Awesome Gaiam Balance Ball Desk chairs to test out. I really want one of these for my desk at work. I wonder if they’ll allow it if I buy it. They are only $79.95 on Amazon!    In addition, One Lucky Duck was sampling their delicious desserts, Siggi’s had five flavors of yogurt they were sampling and giving out, I snagged my first Kind Bar, and received a few yoga coupons. I can’t wait to sample these items in my lunch tomorrow. I’ve seen Siggi’s yogurts on Tina’s blog numerous times but have yet to try them. Blog Pictures 2010 257After a hanging around and sampling products we decided it was time to find a prime spot on the lawn. We couldn’t believe the crowds of people that had already gathered on Central Park’s Great Lawn! This event was going to be a success and we were so excited. Blog Pictures 2010 258We were able to snag a spot in the front, left area. We had a clear view of both the screen and the stage!  Blog Pictures 2010 261We were in awe! All we could do for the first few moments once we reached the lawn was turn around and take in the scene of people.Blog Pictures 2010 259Blog Pictures 2010 265How cool is the Manhattan skyline in the background?! I felt like I was getting ready for a huge Central Park concert! Blog Pictures 2010 260We set out our FREE Gaiam yoga mats (Thanks JET BLUE!) and began to wait.                                                    Blog Pictures 2010 263Luckily, while we waited we were able to have some fun together!Blog Pictures 2010 266

We sampled the treats!                                                            Blog Pictures 2010 278Blog Pictures 2010 267Blog Pictures 2010 268 We took pictures.

Blog Pictures 2010 269 Then the clouds started to roll into the area.Blog Pictures 2010 270 And people talked, and talked, and talked.

Blog Pictures 2010 271 In fact, by this point it was 7:25 and we were all starting to get a little bit annoyed. The wind was whipping, the crowd had reached a great mass, and yet guys kept talking on stage and laughing. Even though we were towards the very front we couldn’t understand half the commentary.

Blog Pictures 2010 272   Blog Pictures 2010 275 Clearly, this was quite the event since there were cameras everywhere! Blog Pictures 2010 277  Then the guy in the wild suit announced that we had in fact set the world record. Evidently, he works for the company and was there to make it official!

Blog Pictures 2010 279 Everyone clapped and the world was happy because they saw yoga in their future. A yogi finally took the stage!Blog Pictures 2010 280  Blog Pictures 2010 282 Then the rain started and the umbrellas came out. What happened to “yoga rain or shine?”Blog Pictures 2010 283 A crazy guy rushed in front of us as we were trying to get our omm on as we prayed the rain would subside.Blog Pictures 2010 284 This happy face and thumbs up means we’ve just been told that the yoga will continue and the park service has given word we can continue yoga in the rain! Let the omms begin!Blog Pictures 2010 285 Blog Pictures 2010 286 Blog Pictures 2010 287 Blog Pictures 2010 288 And we did yoga. For two minutes that is until the lightening and thunder forced them to call it quits. Blog Pictures 2010 289 Am I mad? No, I’m sad that the event didn’t have a warm, sunny evening as I was looking forward to some hot yoga on the Great Lawn. But, I had a great opportunity and a fun evening with wonderful girls. I was part of something that will most likely not happen again in NYC and luckily Lauren grabbed us a cab for the 60 block trip home. That, along with all this swag makes for a great night experiencing NYC.Blog Pictures 2010 295 Blog Pictures 2010 291

Fit and Flow: The Missing Component to my NYC Workout Schedule

Before moving to NYC, I lived in the suburbs of Philadelphia for three glorious years. I made some amazing friends while there, enjoying exploring Philadelphia, and also kicked my ass into the best shape of my life! This was due to many factors including but not limited to the following:

Main Line Bootcamp For Women

-I didn’t live with Bo. This meant that there was never any food in the house that I didn’t buy nor were there the common “boy foods” which would lead me to temptation. I also had more freedom in the kitchen since I was cooking for my taste buds alone.

I worked from home. This meant that I could go to the gym, a class, or run whenever the urge struck since I owned my schedule for the most part and had very flexible hours. In addition, I was able to fix my breakfast and lunch at home which meant tasty egg white omelets and veggies, huge salads, and anything else my stomach craved.

I participated in multiple outdoor workout groups such as the Bryn Mawr Women running club and boot camp multiple times a week.

This last point is one that I am able to influence in my current life stage. I love my new job even though it is office based and that isn’t going to change. I love Bo even though he comes with random takeout or delivery dinner cravings and doesn’t love some of my healthy, odd creations. Since I’m married to him our living situation isn’t going to change either. 🙂 Therefore, over the past few weeks I’ve made it a goal to focus on the third point as I strive to return to my previous fitness level and shed a few of the “married bliss”/stressful job pounds. Thanks to Lululemon, I’ve built Wednesday night Run Club into my weekly routine which has helped me kick my running plateau to the curb.

This week, Daily Candy helped me with the other part of the third point- outdoor bootcamp. As soon as I saw the subject line of Tuesday’s Daily Candy I was ecstatic.  As I read the snippet regarding Leanne and her blossoming fitness business I knew I’d found my missing component. The email described her as a trainer who is passionate about helping others find their optimal state through personalizing workouts, keeping things fun, and doing all of this with a smile. The Daily Candy email was primarily advertising her outdoor workout class  Fit & Flow. For $25, This class combines the rigors of a bootcamp with the restoring qualities of a yoga class. Participants complete 45 minutes of heart pumping and sweat inducing moves in the beautiful surroundings of Central Park before engaging in 45 minutes of stress releasing and muscle lengthening yoga taught by her fitness partner Jill.

Blog Pictures 2010 353

At 6:50pm last night I met the group outside Central Park at 59th and 6th Avenue right near the statues. I was greeted by the energetic and bubbly Leanne who quickly introduced me to Jill and the other ladies. By 7pm there were around 25 women of all shapes and sizes chatting while also discussing their fears in hopes of finding confidence from others.

Blog Pictures 2010 354

“I hope this doesn’t include running because I’m more into yoga. “ “What if I die of exhaustion?” “I’ve never done a boot camp before, have you?” “Umm, the other girls look like they’re in great shape but this is my first time.”

These were just a few of the many comments uttered before Leanne and Jill put everyone to rest. The class would be heart pumping but fun as she promised to keep everything fresh by changing it up and would also provide modifications if anyone needed it. In addition, it was clear that this was not a boot camp intended r o intimidate, fear, or upset anyone. In fact, we all made fun of the hard core, screaming boot camp leader nearby who thought it more fun to scream his heart out at his poor participants rather than participating and encourage them as Leanne and Kim did. Oh well, to each their own but I was glad to be a part of the supportive group!

Blog Pictures 2010 356 Blog Pictures 2010 355

Class started on a grassy knoll about a quarter of a mile from the park entrance. We lined up and started with some warm-ups including two minutes of jumping jacks and then a minute of high knees. During the warmups Leanne informed us that throughout the class she wanted us to take a note from yoga’s book and do everything with intention. This meant that whether you were doing a jumping jack or a lunch, every muscle should be engaged- no flailing arms or listless squats.

Blog Pictures 2010 357

After the warm up we quickly began the real workout. This consisted of lunges, burpees, pushups, more lunges, abs, and a quick jog down to the waterfall area for dips and incline pushups. The abs section was one of my favorites as we were able to partner with another participant for the exercise. Working with others always makes the time pass quicker!

Blog Pictures 2010 359 Blog Pictures 2010 360 Blog Pictures 2010 361 Blog Pictures 2010 362

We ended the “fit” session with a relay race between two teams. Everyone was very supportive, team oriented, and focused on winning so they didn’t have to do more pushups. Unfortunately, one of the participants fell and hurt her ankle. Everyone immediately stopped and focused on her health. No one was upset that her injury forced the one team to come in last. Instead everyone was concerned about how she was feeling and also ensuring that she felt like she was still part of the team and loved. This was amazing. I’ve been part of many bootcamps before and normally there is a lack of team spirit and support. I believe this all comes from the leader. In the end we all did the pushups because we’re all one team!

After a short break, Jill moved the group into the “flow” section of the class. I honestly can’t remember all of it but can tell you that it was very similar to a flow vinyasa class. The movements were not held very long but flowed from one into another. We went through the warrior poses but also focused on many traditional “yoga for runners” movements to stretch us out after the great workout.

Blog Pictures 2010 364 Blog Pictures 2010 363

I thoroughly enjoyed this workout and would highly recommend it for almost any person. Here are a few pointers:

-Be open to hard work. The more you put in the more you get out. Some of the strongest women there were older than me and they were all smiles!

Bring your own yoga mat, towel, and water. Many people, including myself, forgot yoga mats. While the Central Park lawn is nice it isn’t exactly soft or comfortable for planks or yoga. –

Give yourself plenty of time to arrive. I really enjoyed getting to know the other participants before the class as it made partner sections less awkward. In addition, since the class doesn’t take place at the meeting point it’d stink to get there late and then be lost.

The North Face Endurance Challenge : 11 Girls and 3 Relay Teams!

Welcome to all my new readers who may have found me through some of my marathon relay teammates! Yesterday was my highest number of readers ever and I hope you’ll continue to follow my journey as I strive for a healthy, happier life!

Today epitomized why I love blogging! The North Face Endurance Challenge brought together 11 bloggers and readers alike for a day of hot, humid fun and running! We made up three different teams as you can see from this picture. Blog Pictures 2010 304
The three teams were Run Bloggers Run, Run to Eat, and Team Awesome. Unfortunately, Lindsay was sick so Team Awesome was lacking a runner for the final leg of the relay. Luckily there were extras on hand from the Challenged Athlete Foundation and the guy below ran their final leg! He was awesome!
Blog Pictures 2010 336
This race was like none that I’ve ever done before in that it didn’t start until 11am. Normally, I’ve finished a race and showered by 11! We had to catch a lovely shuttle bus around 9:45. The bus reminded me of white water rafting trips or childhood field trips!
Blog Pictures 2010 296
Meghann clearly enjoyed herself!
The race was held in the Algonkian Regional Park in Sterling, Virginia. We assumed that we would be running through the scenic Great Falls area based on the course ratings:
The Great Falls sections are highlighted by some intense elevation changes, with steep-but-run-able climbs up to 300 feet. The River Trail covers what is widely held as the marquee section the event: up to three miles of tip-toeing and hopping along bluffs high above the Potomac River. The tedious-but-scenic time it takes to cover this section is more than offset by cruising sections of undulating trail in the river basin.
Unfortunately, the above review was not reflective of our terrain.
The starting and vendor area was a picnic/park area. But, it made for the perfect pre-race relaxation area and picture point!

We all had a great time chatting and getting to know each other. I’d been talking with many of these ladies for the past few months so it was finally nice to put a name with a face and twitter name! 🙂 Before we knew it was 10:50 and time to get ready for the first leg!

Last minute logistics and transition discussions!

Some runners were a bit more intense than others! Our team was  about having fun!
Blog Pictures 2010 311Since there were no mile markers on the course almost EVERYONE used a Garmin. I had the chance to test out a Garmin by transitioning Jess’ ankle tracker and Garmin after she was done. Blog Pictures 2010 312     Blog Pictures 2010 317
Blog Pictures 2010 318 And they’re off like the wind. After the A leg took off we had some time to explore the vendor tents, take a last pit stop, and pose for pictures of course! We decided to run together since this was our first trail race and had both been randomly put in the B spot. Blog Pictures 2010 319 My goal for the race was to run the entire time and maintain under a 10:30 while also enjoying the course. I made a split minute decided to run sans headphones. This allowed me to hear the birds, other runners, and rustling bushes. I enjoyed it more than I expected.

Blog Pictures 2010 320 The scenic Potomac River as seen from the first mile of the trail.Blog Pictures 2010 321 After a brief grass stint we switched to a paved path along the golf  course and playing fields. I passed Eat to Run on my way out! This course wasn’t what I expected from a North Face Endurance Challenge. We were only in the actual woods and rocky terrain area for half the course while the rest wound in and out of playing fields and golf courses. I bet if we’d done the more hard core races, half marathon, marathon, 50K, or 50 miler we would have scene the water falls, hills, and course that fit North Face’s description better. But, considering this was my first trail run of any type it was probably better this way. Blog Pictures 2010 322 The trail reminded me of the South Georgia woods- humid, hot, and dense. The shade was a welcome treat during this portion.Blog Pictures 2010 323      We weren’t so hard core as to run through the river but we did cross it via bridge.trailrunfinish     As I was coming out of the woods I realized I had more juice so I upped the ante some. I finished strong and loved every minute!
I would sign up for another trail run tomorrow if the opportunity presented itself! In fact, this evening we’ve all been tweeting about doing the half next year!
Each lady finished strong throughout the race and completed swift transitions!Blog Pictures 2010 325     Blog Pictures 2010 326 Blog Pictures 2010 327 Leslie finishing strong in her running skirt! This weekend she convinced me that I needed my own Jackson and a great running skirt.Blog Pictures 2010 328 Blog Pictures 2010 329    Cara, Run to Eat’s last lady heads off after the transition. Blog Pictures 2010 330
Our last lovely runner was all smiles and ready to get the show on the road! By the time the last leg started it was after 2pm and she was getting revved up. Go Meghann !Blog Pictures 2010 332  After Meghann hit the trail, Leslie, Heather and I enjoyed a much deserved free post race treat- beer!   Blog Pictures 2010 335        Her only request upon finishing was water and skittles. Luckily, these healthy living bloggers could deliver!  Blog Pictures 2010 337 Less than four hours later our last runner crosses the line!Blog Pictures 2010 338      Blog Pictures 2010 339 Blog Pictures 2010 340     After a long day out in the sun and barely any food, we were all craving a delicious, sit down lunch in the area. Five of us (Leslie, Meghann, Cara, me, and  Heather headed over to Reston Town Center for some much needed Mexican!
Blog Pictures 2010 343     Uncle Julio’s was able to answer our Mexican craving and impress us with their fresh tortillas! Yum!

Blog Pictures 2010 351
Clearly we were hungry as this bowl of chips disappeared in about 5 minutes flat between the five of us. Their salsa was a fiery chipolte flavor that was a delicious complement to the salty chips. Blog Pictures 2010 344 A few of us ordered the vegetarian fajitas. I was excited that the fajitas included guacamole and portabella mushrooms, two of my favorite things. I was not excited when we realized the “cheese” on top of the vegetables was in fact butter. *sigh* Regardless, this was one of the best vegetable fajitas I’ve ever had. The veggies were all very fresh and the serving size was quite large. In fact, Meghann and I could have shared if we’d realized ahead of time.  Blog Pictures 2010 346     Delicious warm tortillas made fresh in house.  Blog Pictures 2010 348     Is there anything more delicious than this creamy and flavorful combination?

Blog Pictures 2010 350
We spent the lunch laughing and reminiscing over race memories before parting ways. Leslie was kind enough to drop Meghann and I off at the nearest Metro station so Part 2 of our Virginia adventure could begin. We were looking forward to meeting Jacquie in Georgetown!
Eleven girls met up this morning unfamiliar with the area and each other and then left the event friends and teammates! What a great day!

If you’re new to my blog, I’d love to know more about you! If you have any questions or topic requests for me please let me know! I hope you enjoy!
