Friday Favorites – All Things Running

IMG_8935[1]

Last night, while finishing my speed intervals, I realized that I have lots of running related things to share with you guys. Therefore, I figured it’d be a fun twist to focus this week’s Friday Favorites on just that – all things running! I hope you guys enjoy!

Something to Think About

Jess recent blog post resonates with me as this is a hard thing to realize for so many of us. Are you willing to give 100% to achieve your running goals?

Inspiration in the form of Boston Marathon

Having a hard time finding inspiration for this weekend’s workouts? This incredible runner has muscular dystrophy and STILL finished the Boston Marathon!

Tina threw down negatives splits for each of the 26.2 miles AND improved her marathon time by 11 minutes!

Sarah earned her sub 4 goal with lots of mantras and positive thoughts, even when the going got tough!

Janae ran an incredible 3:12 marathon, just a year after injury!

Michele set a new PR after six years of training and heartbreak. Her recap gave me chills and I couldn’t happier for her!

Dani may not have set a new PR, but I love her honest thoughts on this year’s 4:12 marathon, which is still more than an hour and a half improvement from her first marathon!

Rachel summarized Boston as not her fastest but definitely the most memorable. That in itself is reason enough for me to have Boston on my list of races I hope to run eventually!

This father of 2 led the Boston Marathon during the first mile!

Recovery

Are you spending enough time with your foam roller? This quick video will help you get familiar with the best foam rolling moves for runners.

Add a scoop of protein powder to this delicious Orange Julius recipe and you have the perfect summer recovery smoothie!

Gear

As part of the Publix Savannah Women’s Half Marathon ambassadorship, the gang at New Balance provided each of us with training gear. In addition to the gear they gave to us, I bought some additional pieces during the New Balance Fashion Fitness Expo.

Over the past month, I’ve practically lived in much of this gear! These pieces, especially the tank and shoes, have become my go to gear for just about any activity outside of work. I wanted to provide you with a quick review of my favorite pieces.

New Balance Fresh Foam Boracay – These shoes are lightweight while still providing wonderful cushion and support, thanks to the foam sole.  The line features vibrant colors, such as the blue and yellow ones I chose. Due to their lighter weight, I prefer them for shorter runs and speed workouts versus my Mizuno Wave Riders. I am still not accustomed to running longer distances in them, as I find my calves and legs feel the runs more the next day.  However, the more I run in them, the more I grow accustomed to the responsive shoe. We’ll see how things go, but this shoe may quickly become my shoe of choice for all distances!

New Balance Ice Short Sleeve Shirt – The technology New Balance uses in their Ice line continues to amaze me. As you all know, I sweat A LOT! Any shirt that can keep me cool and comfortable during an afternoon workout is a win in my book. The dark blue color hides my sweat while the loose cut ensures that there is no chafing or sticky mess.

New Balance Impact 3” Short – (similar ones on super sale here and here) – The last thing I want while running is a short that hikes up, gets stuck in awkward places, or moves around. Instead, I typically order shorts a size larger so they are loose and airy. These shorts combine loose leg openings with a wide, comfortable waist band which means there is zero tugging during workouts. Even though they were brand new, I wore these during the half and immediately fell in love! The pocket is large enough to hold fuel and the wide leg openings kept things fresh and ventilated.

New Balance Ice Graphic Tank – This tank uses the same Ice technology so I am cool and dry, even during the toughest workouts like 1Rebel. It is so light that I forget I’m wearing it!  The comfortable material is loose enough that it doesn’t stick or chafe, while the bright color is feminine and flattering.

What running gear are you loving right now?

Friday Favorites – April Edition #2

Happy Weekend friends!

This post is going up later than expected as yesterday was one of those days. My last meeting of the day ran far longer than expected, and I found myself finishing the conference call just as I was starting the weekend with friends. I kicked off the weekend on this side of the pond by catching up with a girlfriend during a manicure and pedicure followed by a double date at Thai Geneva with our friend Ed & Kerrie.

breakfast

Hopefully within the next few minutes the rain will either stop or ease up so we can head out for our ten-mile long run. Until then, I’m just sipping NUUN, coffee and fueling with peanut butter and banana toast.

Here are a few of my favorite articles, recipes, blog posts and things that are making me smile this week!

As always, please share what your favorites are this week in the comments section so I can check them out!

What You Need to Know About Lilly Pulitzer for Target – I’ll be up bright and early to shop the Lilly Pulitzer for Target collection. Luckily, Theodora had the opportunity to shop the collection early and provides her tips and thoughts in this helpful post!

Need breakfast inspiration? I love this post filled with a week of delicious, healthy breakfast ideas from Charlie!

Would you apply for a job with no benefits or salary? Wait until you see what happened to the people who applied for this job.

A number of friends have shared this piece, The Moral Bucket List,  from last Sunday’s New York Times. It left me nodding my head and thinking about many of his points.

So the FDA decided to crack down on KIND bars earlier this week, which has led to a number of articles and responses. I love this response from R.D. Cynthia Sass and this explanation on why the FDA action doesn’t mean they aren’t healthy. I personally LOVE Kind Bars, especially their low sugar options.

I can only imagine how much time fashion bloggers take to stage most of their Instagram photos but what about Barbie? At 700,000 followers and growing, it’s not all fun and games over on the Barbie Instagram account.

So, I FINALLY downloaded Snapchat, and while I still don’t fully understand how to use it, I’ll be sharing content on My Story. Hop over and follow healthyhappier if you want to see some snippets into our life.

I cashed in my Nordstrom gift card yesterday for three items I’ve been eyeing for ages! Luckily each of the pieces are under $80, so I was able to snag all 3 for less than $200!  This Summer you’ll see me exploring and relaxing in these shoes and sipping wine by the lake in this dress and these wedges.

We forgot how delicious a simple pesto is until we made it on Sunday night. This recipe is super simple but also provides ideas for some fresh spins on regular pesto.

Since I’m traveling Monday through Wednesday this week, these chocolate peanut butter bites will be a perfect snack for the flight and during the conference.

Friday Favorites – April Edition

High five gang – it’s officially Friday, even for my Pacific Coast readers!

Over here our only plans include an eight mile long run tomorrow and lots of relaxation. Our perfect Spring weather is supposed to continue this weekend – 65 and sunny. You’ll find me reading by the lake and sipping a crisp, cold wine tomorrow afternoon.

And now, here are a few of my favorite articles, blog posts and things making me smile this week!

YOU GUYS – I never expected the response last night’s post received. In fact, I went back and forth about even sharing it because I didn’t want to come off as someone who uses the blog as a place to rant. But, I realized shortly after hitting publish that it clearly struck a chord with you all and if my experience can help even one reader than I’m glad I wrote it. I smiled this morning when I read each and every one of your comments. Since my WordPress iPhone application isn’t working, I’ll be responding one by one this weekend!

I’ve only used the Nike+ iPhone App for 15 runs but so far I really like it! I’ve used it with my Garmin three times to check how accurate it is and each time it is PERFECTLY accurate. The interface and accuracy is far better than MapMyRun. While I haven’t leveraged Nike+ music or social media features, a number of my friends use Nike+ to support each other and complete challenges.

Every blogger can learn something from my girl Katy Widrick’s latest post. She preaches the truth in that FTC disclosure is important and something we shouldn’t joke about. Therefore, you’ll find that moving forward I will clearly let you guys know when I receive any compensation for a post, sponsored or affiliate links.

Nuun All Day Hydration Tablets – I haven’t had a single s oda, including my beloved Diet Coke, since December 31st. While I drink water 90% of the time, sometimes it’s nice to have a little extra something added to the water to give it some flavor. Each afternoon around 4pm, I toss a NUUN All Day tablet into my water. Right now I’m really enjoying the grapefruit orange flavor.

Contigo Autoseal Travel Mug – Since Bo moved to Geneva, I started bringing my own coffee to the office since we make French Press together each morning. Not only does this mug leave my hot coffee warm for at least four or five hours but it also has never leaked in my purse. <Knock on wood I didn’t just curse myself!>

Nine times out of ten I find myself saving Anne’s post for later reference as each one has so much great information whether workouts, recipes or tips for healthier living. This week’s roundup of healthier living tips included more than 30 easy to implement tips from she and other health and wellness bloggers! I implemented the “Turn off all the pop up notifications on your phone (aka email, social media, etc.)” on Wednesday and am finding that I check my phone screen far less now.

If you’re looking for some Spring and Summer fashion inspiration, look no further than Hallie’s Island Time post which features 3 adorable outfits! I especially love this bright romper though I find it hard to spend that much on a romper.

I had no idea that Target carries so many healthy foods these days such as KIND bars and Almond Butter! I definitely need to stock up next time we’re in the United States.

I have a huge crush on OPI’s new colors in their Hawaii collection! If someone could deliver the gel version of That’s Hula-rious, Is Mai Tai Crooked, Go With the Lava Flow and Aloha from OPI on my doorstep I’d be quite grateful. Unfortunately most nail salons in Geneva only carry the classic colors.

Your turn? What is making you smile this week? What should I order to my doorstep immediately?
