Friday Favorites – May 6, 2016

ready set friday
Ready, set, let’s run into the weekend!

Who else is ready to sprint towards the bar? Oh wait, just me? I’m ready for a glass of wine or two or three. After a busy week I’m ready to stay put here in Brooklyn this weekend.  Tonight we are meeting a few friends for happy hour drinks followed by dinner. Tomorrow, if the rain in New York ever ends, we are going to lay sod and plant more flowers. If the rain continues, we will head to the movie theater for popcorn and a matinee date. On the fitness front, we are going to run both Saturday and Sunday though they will be shorter runs due to a hamstring strain. Anyone else running the NYRR Japan Day run on Sunday?  Oh, and since I am flying to Cincinnati for work first thing Monday morning before flying directly to Savannah on Wednesday night for the wedding festivities, I need to plan all my outfits for the four days of festivities and pack.

So since there is very little time between now and happy hour, let’s dive into this week’s edition of Friday Favorites, including recipes, articles, posts and other things that caught my eye this week.

  • Thankfully, I haven’t had many injuries during my ten years of running. But, once again, the team at Finish Line Physical Therapy are basically angels for runners and other athletes who are injured or looking for preventative care. I’ve been in twice so far and am amazed with their facility, the technology that reminds me to do my exercises each day and the one on one attention I receive from Alison during each session.
  • This candle has filled my home office with a hint of Spring this week even though the weather has been nothing but gloomy, cold rain.
  • Any weekend that I’m not traveling I have this innate desire to bake. These healthier blueberry muffins are topping this weekend’s list though I think I may have to balance things out by also baking these Levain Bakery copy cat cookies.
  •  Two days later I am still dreaming about the delicious, healthy Indian food I enjoyed with Zoe at Inday. The flavor combination that they brought together in one simple bowl was unlike anything I’ve had before – pineapple cilantro chutney, cauliflower rice, bok choy and turkey masala. Unlike other healthy hot spots in the city, the restaurant is large enough to sit and enjoy dinner or lunch with a friend but service is fast and the food is reasonably priced.
  •  I love the science and research behind The Biggest Loser article but I sure as hell hope it doesn’t deter people from getting healthy. Yes things changed for these people after the show but let’s not forget that they were in extreme conditions. Most people don’t exercise for hours per day unless they are professional athletes.
  • Did you see this great 5-minute workout video that one of my favorite Fhitting Room trainers, Emily Cook Harris collaborated on with Well+Good and Athleta? Talk about a power team! This workout is perfect for all fitness levels and can be done anywhere! I pinned this to my workout board on Pinterest so I can reference it this week when I’m traveling!
  • My new favorite snack this week is an update on an old favorite. Instead of just dipping apple slices into almond butter, I core the apple, fan the slices on a plate, drizzle some melted almond butter on top, sprinkle with a bit of granola and then eat with a knife and fork. Something about using a knife and fork allows me to slow down, even if just for a few minutes, and enjoy the late afternoon snack while sipping a cup of green tea.
  • Based on every race I’ve done lately and the thousands of runners surrounding me, I certainly didn’t think the running boom ” died .

How about you? What are you loving this week?

Friday Favorites – April 22nd, 2016

Half Moon Bay Jamaica

Happy Friday and greetings from Jamaica! Even though we’ve been friends for more than 10 years, this is the first time we’ve traveled together as a duo without a race or work event. We arrived at Half Moon Resort in Jamaica yesterday around noon and have been relaxing ever since. Seriously, our hardest decision today has been whether to have jerk chicken or jerk shrimp for lunch. Every now and then, unplugging and getting away from it all is necessary. Other than a few snaps, Instagram pics and this post we’re both unplugging. We started the day with yoga overlooking the ocean before moving to the pool where I read three magazines  (People, Women’s Health and SHAPE) before switching over to my book, The Nightingale.  I’ll be back on Monday with a full recap of our time here but until then, let’s dive into this week’s edition of Friday Favorites, including recipes, articles, posts and other things that caught my eye this week.

  • I’m 110 pages into The Nightingale and can already tell I won’t be able to put it down until I finish it. The story follows two sisters during World War II and shows a side of the war that is often untold – the women’s war that they experience while their loved ones are fighting.
  • Since we arrived in Jamaica, Amy and I have both worn these Neor Mosquito Repellent Bracelets. The breeze seems to have kept them at bay, but the citronella scent also helps ensure that bugs don’t ruin our vibe while relaxing beach or poolside. They are less than $10 a pack and come with four replacements and two bracelets, perfect for Summer outings with friends.
  • Even though I haven’t tried the popular Charleston restaurant, Husk, I’ve heard people rave about it for years. Imagine my excitement when I read that Sean Brock is opening two new Husk locations in Greenville, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia in the next twelve months.
  • This workout class is basically nap time and it sounds amazing! You’ll find me at Crunch in the coming weeks, as this class is available to ClassPass members in NYC!
  • Always trying to discover new ways to stay healthy, I loved the tips and tricks in this article for people who work long hours but still want to lose weight.
  • Before deciding to invest in a juice cleanse for a quick fix, read this article to ensure you know what that expensive cleanse will actually do and not do. Don’t get me wrong – I love fresh pressed juices but I don’t rely on them to “cleanse my system.”
  • Reading race recaps always inspires me but there is something about Boston Marathon recaps that stay with me long after I read them. Maybe it’s knowing how hard each runner worked to get there or the way the late Spring timing can always surprise the runners with a mix of weather. Regardless, I recommend reading these recaps Pumps & Iron Stuft Mama as they each inspired me to lace up my running shoes, even on vacation!

Friday Favorites – April 15th, 2016

marsh pic

Even though this week was a short one, after enjoying an extra day of vacation in Savannah on Monday, it has been brutal. Between client and team meetings, I felt like I was running all over NYC and New Jersey. There were also some subway issues this week, which I’m sure were due in part to the craziness taking place with the presidential candidates in town yesterday. Oh well, this afternoon we are heading down to Stone Harbor, New Jersey for a gorgeous beach wedding. Even though the wind and cool temperatures are following me everywhere, I am already looking forward to tomorrow morning’s long run along the water and some relaxation while Bo and the other groomsmen attend to the groom tomorrow.  What are you doing this weekend? Any fun plans?

As promised, in regular Friday fashion, here is this week’s version of Friday Favorites. So, as you count down the hours until the weekend begins, let’s dive into this week’s edition of Friday Favorites, including recipes, articles, posts and other things that caught my eye this week.

  • In just six short days I will be enjoying a girls weekend away in Jamaica. When I saw this on sale earlier this week, I knew it would make the perfect poolside to happy hour cover-up since it can transition easily when paired with my favorite, gold sandals and this fun clutch.
  • I am SO thankful that big, Fortune 500 companies are starting to realize that parental leave and work life balance are important for the long term relationship they have with their employees. This week E&Y shook things up by announcing a new policy which allows both moms and dads 16-weeks paid paternal leave. This announcement puts them at the front of the consulting pack for parental leave and will hopefully inspire other companies to make similar changes.
  • With two half marathons coming up (Flying Pig and Brooklyn), I love the idea of using the Flying Pig on May 1st as a practice half marathon. Since it is three weeks before Brooklyn my legs will have time to recover from the hills while I can mentally think about what changes I want to make before Brooklyn.

barre pic

I’m wearing this tank in the above pic which I snagged at Target last weekend!

  • I returned to the barre this week in a big way, unintentionally taking two classes withing 12 hours – oops! My time away from barre classes made me realize the impact these small movements make on my body. I left both classes (Bar Method Brooklyn and Barre3 West Village) feeling challenged and just a bit leaner since the workouts really focus on strengthening, lengthening and engaging your core muscles.  While the two studios are very different they both have a great community feel and the movements helped me target a few weaknesses such as my glutes. Expect to see more barre classes in my monthly ClassPass (<–Get $25 off your first month with this link) recaps.  Click here to read all my monthly ClassPass recaps.
  • Speaking of ClassPass, they announced some new changes this week including new plan options. What are your thoughts?
  • Are you trying to grow longer, thicker hair? Two of my favorite bloggers, Rachel and Gina, shared great posts this week all about hair. I ordered Gina’s favorite hair mask and already swear by the same supplement as Rachel! What’s your favorite hair tip or product?
  • I love reading that British kickboxing champ Ruqsana Begum is launching a line of athletic gear for Muslim women, including hijabs, in hopes that it inspires them to feel empowered to participate in sports!
  • I am guilty of ignoring LinkedIn as I love my company and my role. But, this article made me realize the value it can provide and was the kick in the butt I needed to add “update LinkedIn profile” to my to do list. I appreciated the advice of using the app instead of the website to find tips and articles to help improve my current business and grow as a manager.
  • I just added the ingredients for this quinoa tabouleh recipe to this week’s shopping list. Making a double batch of this will provide enough to enjoy as a dinner side, paired with grilled chicken or fish, as well as a perfect salad topping for lunches!

pineapple hacks

  • The perfect gift for almost any occasion, my friend Katie made this wine pineapple for an upcoming housewarming party and I immediately pinned it for a few upcoming birthday and bachelorette parties! Hopefully this will be a Pinterest win for me versus a fail.
  • The warm weather means that iced coffees and breakfast smoothies are making a return to my daily routine. Easy to whip up and satiating, it’s easy to forget that everything you add to the blender, regardless their health content, should be measured and has both calories. While I never recommend measuring things daily it can’t hurt to take a minute and assess your smoothie to ensure you’re not making the same smoothie making mistakes highlighted in this article.
