Bar Method Soho Review: Pain with a Smile

IMG_1927.JPG
Tonight I had the great opportunity to check out the newest Lotte Berk kid on the block in NYC thanks to Jes free class she set up for her readers. I’ve enjoyed classes inspired by the Lotte Berk method previously at Core Fusion and Physique 57.
In preparation for class, I reviewed the basics of The Bar Method.
The Bar Method™workout creates a uniquely lean, firm, sculpted body by combining the muscle-shaping principles of isometrics, the body-elongating practice of dance conditioning, the science of physical therapy and the intense pace of interval training into a powerful exercise format that quickly and safely reshapes and elongates muscles.

I’ve found from previous experience that taking a bar class 2x per week results in definite body changes. When I was taking Physique 57 classes last year 2x per week I noticed arm definition and my thighs were more slender. It has similar results as swimming.
The Bar Method Soho location is located on the second floor of 155 Spring Street right in the heart of Soho. Upon entering the space this evening I immediately noticed the warm, bright lighting and clean lines. This environment is definitely refreshing after walking through the Subway station grime.

The reception was warm and attentive as each reader entered. Everyone was smiling and more than happy to give us a tour of the space so we could make it our own. First up, the necessary water and treats in their kitchen area. I’ve never seen this before in a studio!

They offer filtered water to refill your water bottle or sell bottled water for $1.25. In addition they offer herbal teas for post class refreshment.

As you can see above, the lobby area features a plethora of lockers and benches which students may use to store their belongings. The lockers have key locks which remove and hang in the rooms during class which makes it easy to know your things are safe and sound.
Next stop on our tour was the ladies locker room. Once again there are plenty of lockers in the locker room along with changing space, bathroom stalls, towels, and a small shower area featuring a few stalls.

This locker room was definitely easier to navigate than both Physique 57 and Core Fusion. There was plenty of space even when 10 of us were in there changing. In addition, the new space has been kept up very well and is still spotless!
After meeting some of the other attendees, many of whom I’d met previously at other events, we were ready for a great class.

The class itself was very, very similar to both Core Fusion and Physique 57. The class is an hour long and best practiced while wearing socks or special grip socks which are sold at the front desk. I wore my Core Fusion socks and they worked perfectly.

I would really like to enjoy more Bar Method Soho classes but right now it doesn’t fit into my monthly gym budget since I already enjoy an Equinox membership. However, I think this is a great class to enjoy with friends every now and then. It forces me to focus on the difficult, small movements. If you are interested in learning more, their website is very thorough! In addition, a few other ladies have reviewed the classes: Jes, Dori, and Missy. Thank you Jes and Bar Method Soho for an amazing evening and workout! Hopefully I’ll be back soon to receive more pain with a smile.
Here are some of my favorite aspects of tonight’s class:

Amy, one of the founders, led our class and had an amazing knack for learning names. She complimented and critiqued each of us throughout the class while addressing us by our names. This made me focus more since I knew I wasn’t “invisible”

    • Everything was done with a smile. The instructors and all staff must have been extensively trained on service and it shows!
    • The music was awesome! I’ve found in other classes that the music is dull at times and rarely actual music, especially during my experiences at Core Fusion. Tonight’s music was a great mix and really helped me stay with the beat.
    • I enjoyed tonight’s thigh sequence at the bar. It wasn’t necessarily as long as Physique or Core Fusion’s but I felt it very effective.

Whole Foods Lunch: Save Money and Waste

Today was a non-stop day starting bright and early.

Unfortunately, my body was trying to send me a message this morning and I slept through my 5:15 wake up call and the 5:30 snooze. Therefore, at 5:45 when I finally woke up I had lost my workout window. I did a quick mini workout in the apartment to wake my body up.

Wake Up Workout

20 pushups, 50 sit ups, 15 pushups, 50 obliques (25 each side), 10 pushups, 1.5 min plank

2 minute high legs

1 minute up chair tricep dips, 1 minute of bicep curls

2 minute jumping jacks

Back stretches

I was alive and awake after this quick workout and put this energy to good use at work. I headed into work 45 minutes early to work on my to do list. As some of you all may remember, I recently changed roles and this has left me a little crazy lately. Luckily, things are finally falling into place.

Breakfast

I balanced my hot oatmeal with some refreshing cool yogurt this morning and LOVED it. Instead of mixing the dry oats with the yogurt I actually cooked the oats first and then added a dollop on top. IMG_3480 Weight Watchers Almond Vanilla Oatmeal, 1/2 c blueberries, 1/4 c Dannon Light N Fit yogurt, 2 Tbsp flax seed, 1 Tbsp maca powder

The morning passed quickly as I was in meetings and had a few deadlines.

Lunch

This weekend I discovered a great, easy way to save money and waste. Each week I buy salad ingredients and then end up taking my lunch half the week and therefore having to throw away produce that have gone to waste. When Bo and I were shopping at Whole Foods Sunday I discovered their prepackaged salads. They are very reasonably priced ($4.99-$6.99) and include healthy dressing, protein, and tons of toppings! Today’s salad was Asian inspired and only cost $4.99!

I hoped to workout this evening but unfortunately it didn’t happen. Bo and I may have walked to 16 Handles for some cool, delicious, goodness filled with unpictured banana, peanut butter, and vanilla flavors. Other than that we gave into his sushi cravings and ordered the cheapest sushi we’ve found so far. But, Seamless Web users gave it rave reviews. It..was…awesome!

I enjoyed a rainbow roll and tuna roll. They unfortunately didn’t offer brown rice but their rice vs fish ratio was perfect! I’d definitely order from Yo Sushi again!

I’m looking forward to a great Thursday tomorrow! I have a 4 mile run planned bright and early which will be my longest run since my injury. So far things are going very well in therapy and after this week my sessions will decrease to 1x per week which will include a 30 minute deep tissue massage and 30 minute therapy session. The massage is primarily for my alignment and tight hips. Tomorrow evening I get to hang out with Jes, Jacquie, Rebecca, Theodora, and others at Fit Chick In The City’s awesome Bar Method class.

I can’t wait to give it a try and see some of my favorite bloggers!

Help Needed

I bought this dress two weeks ago from Nordstrom Rack. I would like to wear it for an upcoming wedding down in Atlanta. What shoes do I wear with it?

Get Out of the Gym

Unfortunately, I spend approximately 60 hours per week sitting inside under fluorescent lights. Therefore, come Friday at 5pm all I want to do is spend hours outside. As you’ve seen in previous posts, we find numerous ways to get our weekly dose of Vitamin D.

Reading or playing around in Central Park with friends

Drinking and eating outside

and last but not least, breaking a sweat outside! I prefer to participate in outdoor runs, boot camps, and yoga classes all weekend long versus    stepping foot in a gym.

Therefore, I was excited when NYC fitness diva, Jes, Fit Chick in the City                      invited her readers to a free Fit Chick Boot Camp in Central Park this morning. The instructions were clear: bring nothing except yourself and a bottle of water, show up at 9:30, and get ready for a sweatastic workout!

I met the lovely ladies in Columbus Circle before venturing into the park. Luckily, weather was on our side as it was sunny and hot by 9:30.

For the next hour, Jes took the five of us through a great workout in the shade and SUN of Central Park. We were inspired by the Intensati   workout taking place a few steps away and the fighting ninjas filming below us. Okay, maybe the ninjas just made us laugh. But, regardless, what I loved about this workout is that the entire time we were working out we were also enjoying our surroundings.

Jes kept us in a small area of the park but used everything around us as props including bridges, steps, park benches, and the grass. The workout consisted of more squats and lunges than I think I’ve ever done, some great pushup action on the bench, plank reaches, side steps, dips, step ups, and running. Thank you for organizing this Jes and being so generous. We all had a blast meeting other readers and bloggers (hi ladies!!) while also breaking a sweat and lunging our way to a body like Jes’.

After an hour of outdoor boot camp I was craving three things: –

-Vita Coco

-A pool

-A strapless workout top as I got some wicked tan lines today

Luckily 2 of the 3 took place at my next stop, Equinox. The Columbus Circle location features a 25 yard pool equipped with pull bouys, goggles, and kickboards.

Today, I returned to the pool. I have a love/hate relationship with the pool because I know it’s good for me and I love what it does to my body but I hate and dread it because it’s so hard. It had been 4 months since I stepped in a pool and was ready to conquer my fears! 25 laps and 625 yds later my time was cut short due to some crazy Iron Men that decided they owned the pool. Oh well. I finished happy and excited for my next swim. I’d like to include at least 1-2 swim workouts per week as my back continues to mend. It’s a great cardio activity and is impact free.

The rest of the afternoon was spent with Rebecca on the rooftop of her gym, Club H! What a great day it’s been thus far! Now it’s off to dinner with Melissa and Frank.
