Thankful Things Thursday

Happy Thursday! I don’t post a thankful things Thursday every week but this week I think it’s appropriate due to the wonderful week I’ve had! I’ve been smiling ear to ear this week even though our weather has been less than wonderful in New York City this week.

Three days in a row, this scene has greeted me as I’ve headed to work.

IMG_2224 (478x640) But, luckily the outlook for the weekend and next week includes sunshine, temperatures above 75, and very little rain! I’ll take it!

Now, without further ado, let me share with you some of the things that are making me smile this week!

1. Fashion Sense: I’ve never considered myself a fashionista or even someone who has the ability to put together good looking outfits. Luckily, over the past few months, that has slowly changed. Working in the fragrance and retail industry means that I get to work with fabulously dressed women and men on a daily basis. They are also very happy to provide their two cents on my outfits. Until recently, I’ve clung to my baggy cardigans, loose pants, and blouses that were my security clothes when I was heavier and less secure. Slowly but surely, my colleagues have convinced me to include fitted clothing in my wardrobe. In addition, I’ve started using WWD, Vogue, and other fashion magazines as inspirations for my own wardrobe. In turn, friends like my favorite author, Tina, have started coming to me for fashion advice! While this still makes me laugh, today’s outfit is proof that I’m getting better at combining old and new pieces to make an outfit that compliments my body.

Belt: Banana Republic circa 2006

Skirt: Ann Taylor Loft (purchased with Meghann back in September!)

Sandals: Cole Haan circa 2010

Watch: White Marc Jacobs Mode Pelly Watch

2. Bright Colors: I grew up in the South where it is most appropriate for girls to wear bright colors versus the black wardrobe in which many New Yorkers live. Therefore, I’m excited to bring color back as the weather gets warmer through fun cardigans, earrings, and even rompers! I can’t wait to rock this outfit next weekend over Memorial Day weekend and then again in Bermuda!

3. My Trainer I’ve raved about the success I’ve seen since starting personal training here, here, and here but I really can’t say enough about my experience thus far. Lauren has pushed my body in ways I never thought possible and given me the confidence to push myself harder in my other workouts and races. Since I started training with her two months ago, I’ve PR’d in two races, lost 6 pounds, gone down a dress size, and have increased my arm exercises to 15 pound dumbbells, and can complete burpees and jump squats without falling flat on my face! While the investment is definitely expensive, it has been the best choice for me. While it may not be for everyone, I highly recommend talking to your gym and seeing if you can meet with a trainer for free the first time. Even one session will help you understand how to better take advantage of your gym’s resources and push you body.

4. Blog Opportunities My blog has allowed me to experience New York City in a way I never imagined. I have had the opportunity to try new workout classes, practice yoga with a thousand other people, and mingle with celebrity chefs. But, moreover, it’s the people who I’ve met through these experiences that have meant the most. I met two of my closest NYC friends, Theodora and Melissa, through my blog and continue to meet new people at every event I attend!

He has a design eye due to his architecture degree, which means he can appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry that goes into a pair of quality shoes. A fun pair of shoes can dress up a pair of jeans or add life to a simple black dress. It’s an area of my wardrobe that can allow creativity and personality into the workplace on a daily basis. In addition, I’ve been addicted to Piperlime lately as they feature shoes for all occasions, prices ranges, and have a wonderful rating system. I found these two pairs of shoes since they were high rated picks in their categories: evening and espadrilles. This week, I embraced two of this year’s trends and couldn’t be more excited to rock them out this weekend in Philadelphia with Sabrina and Meghann.

What fashion related things are you thankful for this season?

I’ll see you all tomorrow for a quick check-in before heading down to Philadelphia for Leslie’s wedding weekend! In addition, I’ll review my favorite new Barre class which I enjoyed last night at Pure Yoga West, thanks to Well+Good NYC!

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has had a great week. I am looking forward to a relaxing weekend with Bo and some of our friends after two weeks of non-stop travel!

In honor of Friday, I wanted to share a few of my latest favorite things with you all ranging from travel must haves to my new favorite work outfit!

Favorite Beauty on the Go Items: When I travel, whether overnight or multiple days, I always bring a few things with me which I call my beauty essentials, in addition to makeup. Clinique’s Moisture Surge has been my favorite moisturizer since college as it is light as can be but still leaves my skin looking and feeling refreshed and dewy. In addition, it goes on under or on top of makeup perfectly! Fekkai Advanced Brilliant Glossing leaves my hair smooth and frizz free regardless of whether I have time to blow dry or straighten my hair. Last but not least, since starting in the beauty industry two years ago, I’ve become a fragrance addict! Fragrance has truly become an accessory and I can’t imagine not wearing it on a daily basis. Therefore, I always travel with this purse size Light Blue travel spray that I received in this year’s gift set.

IMG_1575 (640x478) Fashionable Business Casual: When I started getting serious about shedding the marathon weight, I gave myself goals and rewards. One of those rewards is shopping every time I lose 5 pounds. This past week, my mom and I had a great time rewarding ourselves at the outlets. I found a gorgeous silk blouse at the JCrew outlet and instantly knew how I anted to pair it with items already in my closet to make the perfect office outfit which can easily go into the evening.

new favorite look In reality, the outfit looked a little something like this. I received more compliments on this outfit than any other pant outfit I’ve worn to the office.

IMG_1561 (478x640) Now if I can just figure out how to sweat less when I wear silk.

Favorite Season to Visit New York City:  I’ve decided that the best time to visit New York City is between St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. The weather is rarely any cooler than mid 50’s, there are very few tourists, the city is in full bloom, and new plays are opening on Broadway! While Christmas is magical and the Fall brings leaves, cool weather, and holiday dreams, there is nothing like Spring in New York City! Just look at the gorgeous blossoms in Gramercy Park this morning.

Outlet Shopping 101

Good morning from rainy Savannah, Georgia!

Today’s weather may not be perfect but that still can’t ruin my time down here with my family. I’ve been able to recover from Las Vegas’ craziness quite well. I’ve definitely enjoyed some of life’s little luxuries since I’ve been home:

momssparebedroom (320x240)

  • Sleeping 8 hours each night in a brand new queen size bed
  • Unlimited bowl of fruit including the first peaches of the season
  • Nature’s Pride Bread (not available north of Virginia)
  • Quality time with my family’s two cats
  • Lots of laughter

In case you’re catching up, yesterday we celebrated my mom’s 60th birthday with a long walk on the beach, outlet shopping, and then dinner at Elizabeth’s on 37th. A few people have asked for tips on outlet shopping so, while I’m no expert, I thought I would provide my two cents. Based on yesterday’s experience, I’ve definitely learned a few things over the years.

Efficient Outlet Shopping Tips:

  • Make sure the outlet is worth your time. Do your research ahead of time to see which stores are currently open at your outlets. Unless the outlet center is a hop and a skip from your home, it isn’t worth the cost of gasoline it if there is only one store. We’ve found over the years that stores come and go quickly so doing research ahead of time can save time.
  • Check out their website or savings club. The two main outlet companies, Premium and Tanger, both have great websites. These websites feature all their outlets around the country, a list of stores, hours, and directions. In addition, they often include online coupons and savings alerts. Today on both Premium and Tanger Outlet site there are 20% off coupons to over half of their stores! Their $10 Tanger Club gives you a gift card on your birthday, coupon books, and special web offers!  The Premium outlets have a similar club which is FREE!

  • Make a list ahead of time of what you actually need. It’s easy to let the sale signs get you excited and then purchase things just because it’s on sale. Yesterday, I found myself trying on dresses that I didn’t need or even love just because they were half off. Luckily, my partner in crime, knew what I needed and wanted and convinced me that they weren’t worth even their sale price. Yesterday my mom and I both made a clear list of what we needed which helped us choose which stores we went to and limited our time in the stores. My list was as follows:
  • Summer work dress
  • Dress/romper for Miami and Bermuda
  • Brown skinny belt
  • Bright summer earrings
  • Suit
  • Bring a friend. Having a friend with you who knows your style and your weaknesses will help protect your money. Sometimes your conscience doesn’t speak loud enough during shopping trips, especially with sale signs screaming at your from every direction.
