What the Doctor Ordered

Friday morning, after coughing all night, I finally went to the doctor. If you live in New York City and ever need to see a doctor quickly, I highly recommend the Beth Israel Medical Group. They have a walk-in clinic at each of their locations which guarantees you see a doctor within an hour! Even better, these doctors spend half their time seeing regular patients as well which means if you like one, they can become your primary care doctor. That’s what happened to me on Friday! Finally, some luck came my way!!

The doctor confirmed that I had bronchitis and therefore immediately gave me three different prescriptions to help with the cough, aches, stuffy head. In addition, she also suggested that I put aside my running aspirations until at least Monday but preferably Tuesday, depending on how I feel. She insisted that my body needed to use all its’ energy to fight the bronchitis and heal. Duly noted doc, I want to get better too!

With this new knowledge, Bo and I altered our weekend plans a bit. The last thing I wanted to do, thanks to my lack of smell and therefore taste, was go out to dinner. The only thing I craved was some quality time with Bo and comfortable PJ’s.

After 7 meals of soup, I finally decided it was time for some real food. Friday night we ordered from our favorite Greek restaurant and spent the evening catching up on the three Grey’s Anatomy episodes. Holy drama! I’m loving this show more than normal right now!

The medication worked its’ magic as I slept a solid 12 hours Friday night! We didn’t wake up until 10:30 and spent the entire morning cleaning, taking our winter clothes down to storage, and getting ready for next weekend’s Diamond Derby party. There isn’t much we can do this far in advance but at least we can get out all the décor and such.

Around 2pm we decided it was time to enjoy some fresh air and a workout. Since Bo’s allergies are at their all-time worst state, we headed to Equinox instead of our Central Park plan. Bo ran 6 miles on the treadmill while I power walked 3.5 on an incline, catching up on lots of my April magazines. After the walk I spent 10 minutes doing pushups, ab work, and headstands. The doctor said I was free to workout as long as I kept it lighter than normal, didn’t spin or run and didn’t exceed an hour, regardless the intensity.

We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering through Union Square Farmer’s Market and Whole Foods. We saw some crazy sights including protesters, larger than life flowers and this humungous Opa fish they were cutting fresh in Whole Foods!

Many people have asked how we make time for each other and one of our favorite ways is to cook together. We unplug for 2-3 hours and spend the evening cooking, laughing, making a mess in the kitchen, and sipping wine together.

IMG_2038Last night was no exception as we made two of the recipes from the Hali’imaile General Store cookbook, my favorite restaurant in Maui!

Dinner included a delicious, spicy Crab Topped Gazpacho which took all of 15 minutes to make using our Vita-Mix!

Our main course was something we’ve never made at home before, chicken and mushroom lettuce wraps! These took a bit more time, most of which was the chopping and preparation, but the recipe made enough for at least two nights and was so flavorful even I could taste the rich mushroom and the Asian influences.

All together now!

This delicious food, paired with lots of Downton Abbey was the perfect way to spend time with Bo while also giving my body the much needed rest and nourishment it needed and craved. Not to mention that chewing was a nice new sensation after many meals of Progresso Soup!

Now, just like that, I’m off to Houston for three days of consumer research! This is trip 1 of many for the next few months and I’ll be back later to share my first round of tips for keeping sane during a busy travel season.

Have a wonderful Sunday! I wish I was staying in New York City so I could enjoy the incredible weather and wish my cousin many happy wishes at her baby shower! I’m so sad to miss Meredith’s big day but I have lots of Hawaiian surprises for her little bean when she finally greets us!

Après Ski

Spending time on the mountain is always wonderful, but there is nothing like the evening after. The Tahoe made a detour to the grocery store before heading home. Shopping with four men is always entertaining.

041This house always brings out the fun in people. There is a roaring fire for relaxing, the kitchen is large enough for the chefs and groupies, and the kitchen radio always results in a mid evening dance party.

IMG_7003.JPG

We started with an appetizer course and some beer and wine while the men started in the kitchen.

043 053 The girls were able to catch up by the fire while the boy broke a sweat in the kitchen.

Once again, this year the boys did not disappoint. Last night they prepared rib eye, new York trip, and tenderloin along with the famous Brussels sprouts, and salad.

049 052 054 My plate was filled with delicious food and a glass of Pinot Noir on the side.

Paired with an assortment of Vermont ice creams and sorbet, it was a perfect evening.

Now, after this morning’s oatmeal breakfast, we’re ready for our second day on the slopes.

002 Have a wonderful Saturday!

Mohegan Sun Adventures

After a long week, I crave one of two things: a large glass of wine or a fun weekend with friends. Luckily, thanks to our friends at Mohegan Sun, I am able to enjoy both of those this weekend. The Mohegan Sun invited the four of us to their Sun Wine Fest ‘12 as media guests.

IMG_0550

The Sun Wine Fest brings together over a thousand different beer, wine, and liquor brands in their Grand Tasting Event which is held in Mohegan Sun’s convention center. In addition, their Main Culinary stage will feature demos by Bobby Flay, Todd English, and other area chefs!

Theodora and I boarded the train at 6:00 for New London, Connecticut after a bit of a delay at Penn Station. As you can probably imagine, we were very excited to visit the café car for some evening wine.

IMG_0543

This mini bottle of Kendall Jackson definitely came through for the win as it was both tastier than expected and the perfect amount to split. Since we’ve barely seen each other since the holidays, the 2.5 hour train trip flew by. Luckily we didn’t piss off our neighbors in the quiet car too much.

Once we arrived in New London we discovered an adorable town complete with a main square, ice skating rink, and plenty of bars and restaurants. Theodora and I enjoyed a $4 Long Trail at Y Knot Lounge while we waited for Anne and Tina. The owner was adorable and told us all about the town while we enjoyed our beer.

The bar even had a list of unpaid tabs hanging above the liquor section!

Tina and Anne picked us up a few minutes later and we were on our way to Mohegan Sun. I was amazed when we arrived. Mohegan Sun is literally a single compound which combines the Connecticut countryside with Las Vegas’ shows, gambling, restaurants, and cigarette smoke.

The room has a beautiful view of the surroundings and features a large bathroom and two full size beds.

IMG_0479We headed downstairs for our 10pm reservations at Ballo, the newest addition to Mohegan Sun’s restaurant repertoire. Inspired by the hills of Tuscany, Ballo focuses on bringing together the beauty Italian cathedrals and fresh, locally grown Italian food and produce.

We started with the same wine Tina enjoyed when she was at Ballo back in December, Pio Cesare Arneis. We paired the wine with crusty bread and amazing butter, which was in olive oil and sprinkled with herbs.

When you hand four hungry ladies an amazing menu the result is a table filled with delicious food. Instead of ordering entrees we split four of their appetizers and vegetables. Everything we ordered was devoured within seconds, but the winners were the Brussels sprouts and crispy artichokes.

The doughy pizza, topped with sweet sausage, caramelized onions, and pepper, was the perfect amount to share between the four of us.

Dinner at Ballo was the perfect beginning to our Mohegan weekend and great fuel for this morning’s workout. Though we were moving very slowly this morning, we eventually made our way outside for a run along the Mohegan Sun grounds.

IMG_0556

While there are two parks within a fifteen minute drive of Mohegan, we felt like keeping it simple by running here.

IMG_0558

Clearly, Anne’s thumb was very excited about this run. While there were no actual trails around the grounds we found a few surrounding hills, dead end streets, and most importantly a land fill. Yes, for one reason or another there is a prettier than expected landfill about a half mile from Mohegan Sun through which we may or may not have run.

IMG_0560

The other speedy ladies were running 5.5 miles today but I only needed to do 3 since I ran 7 miles yesterday. We kept a 9:37 pace for the first 2 miles which means that today’s run was more like a speed workout for me than a recovery run. It was great being able to chat with the girls as we explored the grounds.

Clearly we had to take some pictures at the top of the hill.

After our morning run we satiated our hunger at Season’s Buffet, which was complimentary with our media pass. The buffet was very impressive and had options for anyone. Since we know the rest of the day will include lots of drinking and eating during the Sun Wine Fest, we figured it was best to start with a hearty but healthy breakfast.

IMG_0492IMG_0493IMG_0494IMG_0495

Anytime I eat breakfast or brunch in a restaurant with an omelet station I take full advantage of it. Omelets seem to taste better when someone else makes them! My omelet included egg whites, mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers, and cheddar cheese. We were all thoroughly impressed with their fruit selection, especially the fresh pineapple, which was delicious.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Saturday!

*The Mohegan Sun was kind enough to cover the cost of our hotel room and tickets to Sun Fest 12. All other costs are our responsibility.
