Getting to Know Megan Malasarte

Happy Tuesday guys! I have a fun post to share with you all today thanks to the team at Brooks Running.

Did you guys know that the Olympic Track & Field Trials take place in just a few weeks? My friends at Brooks thought it would be fun to give readers the opportunity to get to know some of the Brooks Beast athletes who are competing. I was thrilled to interview Megan Malasarte, a professional runner with whom I have a great deal in common. We both graduated from the University of Georgia, spent our days in between the hedges cheering at football games and burn off steam in the same way. She is an accomplished runner, placing 4th at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships and is the indoor and outdoor record holder for the 800 meter at University of Georgia.  From the email exchange alone, you can tell that Megan is a wonderful and fun runner. I can’t wait to cheer for her next month in person while spectating the Track & Field trials with Brooks!

What does your typical day look like right now, at the peak of training and competition?

o   Let’s say it’s a typical Monday. We will almost always meet at Brooks HQ at 10 a.m. and run to Green Lake from there to then do some technical drills and strides on the turf fields. Mondays are our easy days but are just as important as our workout days which are on Tuesdays and Fridays. Those days are the longest because we’ll have a workout in the morning, eat lunch, then get in our lift shortly after. On average, our practices can range from at least two to four hours every session.

What is the your favorite piece of Brooks gear?

o   My favorite piece of Brooks gear, which is totally a tough question because I have several favorites, is the Women’s LSD Running Jacket in white because it’s pretty versatile for most of my running outfits whether it’s 50s and rainy or 60s, slightly cool and windy. Bonus: it can pack itself into its own pocket in case you get too hot during the run!

x-default What do you to release stress?

o   Not to seem too cliché, but retail therapy usually releases stress for me and sometimes that may just even mean going to a store to look around. I find it relaxing and enjoyable because I really like fashion and clothes. A more economically savvy way for me to release stress is going for an easy run around Green Lake.

As a fellow UGA graduate, how did collegiate sports influence your time in Athens at the University of Georgia?

o   Being a student-athlete at UGA completely shaped my college experience but in the best way possible. There may have been some events or experiences I missed out on by being a student-athlete but with that, I was able to travel and compete in places I had never been before, meet some of my best friends, and most importantly, it opened the door to professional running for me. So, GO DAWGS!UGA runner

How did you make the decision to go from collegiate to professional?

o   I decided to continue my running career post-collegiately because I felt as though I had some unfinished business to take care of and then I was presented with this rare opportunity to run for such an awesome company. Opportunities like this don’t come often so I went for it! It would have been pretty difficult for me to conclude my running career after college because I love it so much!

What was your major at UGA? What do you miss most from your college days?

o   I was a Digital and Broadcast Journalism major with a minor in Communication Studies. Oh man, I’d have to say I miss tailgating and going to football games the most because it was the real deal at Georgia. We would have long runs those mornings but it was always so fun because we’d run through campus and see everyone tailgating at 8 a.m.! A perk of being a student-athlete was getting into the sporting events for free including football games where the student-athletes had a certain section they got to sit in, right underneath the scoreboard behind the field goal.

What food do you eat every day?

o   It’s not the cheapest everyday food yet well worth it for the nutritional value, but I try to eat an avocado a day.

What has surprised you most about being a pro runner?

o   The most surprising thing about being a professional runner is feeling as though I knew enough about running leaving college and then realizing as a pro, I know nothing. It’s like starting from scratch. I thought that once I turned running into my lifestyle and dedicated all my time, energy, and efforts into it that I’d see the results of that right away but that wasn’t the case. There’s this transitional period you have to experience and to trust the timing of it all.

Many women deal with body insecurities regardless their size. There are hashtags like #ihavearunnersbody which helps break through stereotypes. Even though you are an accomplished athlete and runner, what is something that you have now embraced versus being self-conscious of it and what tips would you give to people?

o   At this level, it’s so easy to fall into comparing your body image to others because everyone is so fit and toned. It turns into ‘who is the fittest of them all?.’ I’ve had insecurities about my stretch marks and my stomach but in time, I’ve learned to embrace them because they’re not qualities that hinder my running ability but more so, qualities that set me apart from the other runners. If I could give one tip to people, I would say own what you’ve got because people will take notice, not of insecurities, but in your self-confidence. Embrace you and all of you!

Instagram Fashion: April 2016

Insta Fashion April“Where can I buy that shirt? Who makes those shoes? Those tights are awesome, who makes them?”

It’s time for this month’s edition of Instagram Fashion workout gear round up! This month I mixed things up a bit by sharing items beyond workout gear. April’s weather was far different than I expected – chilly and rainy, which therefore limited the amount of fun, new workout gear I could wear. The forecast for the next few days is warm and sunny so I’m sure that May will bring the beginning of Summer’s heat and humidity.

  1. An athleisure moto jacket that combines fashion with the technical details you’d expect from an athletic brand sounds too good to be true, right? This New Balance Shadow jacket is a favorite of mine as I dash home after a sweaty workout since it’s breathable and made of sweat-wicking material. Anytime I wear the moto jacket people are in shock when they hear it is New Balance.
  2. Is there a more fun combination than stripes and pom-pom details on a shirt? I love pairing this navy and white striped top with jeans or white shorts for a casual, yet fun weekend look. Since buying it last month I’ve worn it five times AND bought it for two friends. It’s on super sale right now, so snag it before they sell out.
  3. I’ve worn this outfit combination a few times this month as it’s perfect for the transitional weather. The Sweaty Betty Zero Gravity tights are lightweight while still providing compression and fun details, while the Brooks Ghost tank is so light I forget I’m wearing it. While I’ll probably not use the tights for Summer workouts, this tank will be a staple for the next few months as I run through the heat and humidity.
  4. I wore this same outfit on three different flights this month as it is comfortable and keeps me warm during chilly flights. The Patagonia Nano Puff  is compact and lightweight so you can easily stuff it into your suitcase if you don’t need it.  Available in 30 different color combination, the Brooks Chariot Heritage shoe is a great everyday shoe that provides great foot support while still being fun and colorful. Last but not least, the Timex Ironman Sleek 150 is a great update to their classic sports watch, allowing me to keep track of time and my workouts with a pop of neon.
  5. There is no question about it, the Brooks LSD Running Jacket was my single favorite item of clothing in April! It’s available in 7 different colors but I love pairing the neon yellow with solid crops or shorts for wet or windy runs.
  6. I wore this vibrant, flattering Jill Stuart dress to a beach wedding down in Avalon last month and loved it so much that I was tempted to buy it after my great Rent the Runway experience. The fun open back and high neck flattered my shoulders and back, two areas I love to highlight.
  7. As soon as I saw this tank in Target I knew I had to buy it! This fun, flowy and inspirational muscle tank has been the perfect top for barre classes and HIIT classes alike since it has side vents and is lightweight.
  8. I’ve owned this Athleta bikini (top and bottom) for four years and it is constantly my favorite for everything from laying out to riding the waves.  The halter top is adjustable and has removable cups – making it a great option for those of us who want just a little bit of padding.

Your turn: What was your favorite item of clothing last month?

Running Into Spring With Brooks

YELLOW_5

Guys I have a thing for neon this season and I’m 100% okay with it. Every workout and running outfit I’ve worn lately has had at least a few pops of neon. When the 5:15 alarm goes off each morning there are only two things that help me wake up – coffee and neon. Bright pops of color make me smile as I trudge out the door for a workout and luckily the gang at Brooks fully support my plan to wear at least one piece of neon gear for every workout!

Two months ago, the team at Brooks Running reached out to me, inviting me to join their Brooks Run Happy Ambassador program. Since I actually wore brooks from 2008-2011, I was already familiar with the brand but before agreeing to join, I asked for a few samples of their latest gear to ensure that their gear and shoes would be something I could feel confident wearing for training runs and races alike.

As soon as I slid my foot into the new shoes, it was love! I’m still in shock that Brooks is interested in having me, a 2-hour half marathon runner, as part of their ten person Run Happy Ambassador program but I couldn’t be more excited! The other ambassadors are familiar faces you may recognize – Meghann, Tina, Anne, Emily, Janae, Jessica, Dorothy, Kristen, and Lora. The other night I joined the other ladies for my first official event, a gear gab chatting all things running gear!

Today I wanted to share with you my four favorite pieces of gear I’ve tried this Spring. If you follow me on Instagram, they won’t be a surprise as they’ve been in almost every running or workout picture recently.

I’ve worn the Brooks Women’s LSD Running Jacket for races and training runs alike over the past few weeks and have fallen in love with this lightweight running jacket. It is windproof and water-resistant but the two features I really love is the fact that it’s reflective for those early or late runs and it packs into itself so if you get to hot you can easily carry it! Many running jackets cost over $100 but this one is on sale for $47!

The Brooks Women’s Neuro Running Shoe doesn’t necessarily look like a running shoe made for speed, with the wide size and crazy pods on the bottom but this shoe helped me achieve some great speeds during NYRR speed workouts last month. The performance-enhancing shoes have a neutral fit but the pods help give you energy back every time your heel and foot hit the ground. They only weigh 7.9 ounces, making them lightweight versus my other running shoes but the sole still provides enough support for my high arches. I will say, after the first run in these shoes I wasn’t sold as they felt so different than my other running shoes. But, by the third wear I was a fan and have now worn them for at least two runs each week, typically five miles or less.

As my travels have taken me to warmer weather, I’ve fallen in love with the lightweight Brooks Ghost Racerback Running ShirtThis ultra-lightweight tank is so light I barely feel it when running or working out. The loose cut allows me to move freely through yoga poses or runs.  It is available in five colors including the one I’m wearing below and hot pink, which I just ordered. Even during last week’s hot yoga class the material wicked the sweat away so I stayed cool and comfortable! I can already tell that I’ll be living in this tank during this Summer!

Last but not least, the Brooks Launch 3 have become my mid to long distance running shoes over the past two months. This neutral running shoe provides the perfect combination of comfort and support for those longer runs while also having a unique midfoot transition zone, which looks like an X, allowing for faster heel-to-toe transition during runs. Available in eight colors, I personally love the hot pink and blue pair which I’m wearing in the pictures.

So there you have it guys – these are my four favorite pieces of Brooks running gear this season. As always, I’ll keep my reviews honest with you all as I know that not everything I order or receive as part of this partnership will be a perfect fit.

What is your favorite piece of running gear right now?

I received this gear either at a discount or complimentary as part of my Brooks Run Happy ambassador partnership.

The top images were shot by the lovely and talented Lydia Hudgens.
