Keep Your Muscles Guessing with TRX Training

Those two straps, hanging innocently, have the ability to quickly remind you that there are muscles you haven’t used in ages.  As part of my partnership with the YMCA, I attended a TRX Circuit class after work at the Prospect Park YMCA. As soon as I walked through the studio door, I could tell this class was popular. Tickets were required in order to snag a spot in the packed class, meaning that it often fills to capacity. As I waited for the workout to begin, Juanita, the friend and experienced instructor warned me that I’d be sore the next day and sweaty by the end of class.

In case you aren’t familiar with TRX this acronym stands for total body resistance exercise.  Invented by a former Navy SEAL, this tool makes common exercises more difficult by forcing you to engage different body parts as you engage your core since you are often suspending your legs off the ground or leaning into the strap which changes your center of gravity. Trust me, this strap made the minute long exercises feel like five minutes of work. Similar to the megaformer at Brooklyn Body Burn, it left me trembling.

During the course of the next 55-minutes, she laughed, danced and motivated us through a workout that reminded me very much of the personal training sessions I took during 2011-2013 as it combined cardio, strength and TRX movements to keep our muscles guessing and ensure that none of the students were ever bored. After splitting the class in half, she explained that we’d rotate constantly between the front of the studio (TRX) and the back of the studio (kettlebells and mats) completing one minute of each movement.

The TRX exercises included the TRX push-up, chest press, inverted row, tricep extension, low row, frog, pike and bicep curls. In the back of the room we used the kettle bells to add an extra level of difficulty to common moves like Russian twists, squats, and lunges before focusing on more kettlebell specific moves like swings.

Once again, I was amazed at how easily Juanita made everyone in the class feel comfortable regardless their fitness level. She was constantly helping people make the moves easier or harder and reminding everyone that they should be proud that they showed up and only compare their ability against themselves, not the person next to them.

Since they offer this class multiple times per week and at multiple locations, I look forward to taking it again soon!

If your local YMCA or local gym or fitness studio offers a TRX or TRX circuit class, it is a great opportunity for you to challenge your body in a new way. If you want to learn more about TRX before going to your first class, this Greatist article outlines the five easy to follow TRX moves.

Valentine’s Day 2016 – A Day Date in Williamsburg

I hope you guys had a wonderful weekend and enjoyed time with people you love, whether celebrating Galentine’s Day or Valentine’s Day. Even though yesterday was the coldest day thus far, with wind chills dipping down to -10, we bundled up for a daytime date, exploring an area of Brooklyn we rarely visit. We spent three hours walking hand in hand taking in the sights, sounds and tastes of Williamsburg

Williamsburg Valentine's Day

We started our adventure with a cortado and latte at Black Star Bakery & Cafe.  With coffee to warm our hands, we spent 45-minutes in line at the famed Bagel Store, before realizing it was a fruitless attempt. Luckily just a few blocks away there was another bagel store which came highly recommended on Yelp. Once we bit into the egg everything bagels, stuffed with cream cheese and lox, we almost forgot how cold we were.  Bright colors and creative murals greeted us around every corner. We warmed up in Bedford Cheese while sampling their delicious cheeses and buying ingredients for an evening cheese plate. We stocked up on our favorite flavors (goat milk, almond butter and sea salt) at Mast Brothers.  We sipped on a fresh green juice from The Shanti Shack, while regretting not bringing clothes for a class at Kula Yoga Project.  Finally, I fell in love with the unique designs and collections at Mociun boutique, especially their  jewelry and home goods.

Your turn – What did you do yesterday to celebrate Valentine’s Day?

A Snowy Weekend in Brooklyn

IMG_8510
Greetings from snowy Brooklyn!

Unlike many of my friends, I spent the entire weekend smiling. Snow makes me feel like a child again.  I absolutely love the peace and tranquility that a fresh snow brings to the streets of New York in addition to the child like antics that come out during the aftermath.  We so often finds ourselves going constantly, with very little relaxation and down time so it is a welcome blessing to have snowy conditions force us to rest and relax. My in-laws, Bob and Mimi, happened to be in town this weekend which made things even more special. I can’t tell you the last time we all spent so much time together.

Friday evening Mimi (my mother-in-law) and I started the weekend with a donation based community yoga class at Brooklyn Yoga Project before dinner at the adorable Locanda Vini e Olii. Their house made olive oils stole the show but everything we tried was delicious.

Saturday morning, I woke up and ran to the window, like a kid on Christmas morning. I managed my expectations, after years of disappointment, expecting to see a few inches and nothing more. Instead, I saw that our back yard was a blustery, winter wonderland!

Like crazies, we bundled up and headed to another wonderful hot, power yoga class at Tangerine Yoga. Considering the conditions, we were tempted to stay in our pajamas and bake an elaborate, warm breakfast but we wanted to share this yoga studio with both Meg and Mimi after weeks of raving about their classes and hands-on instructors. By the time we left the studio at 10:30 the wind gusts were reaching 30 miles per hour and Brooklyn looked like the inside of a snow globe.

The rest of our snow day accomplishments included making homemade pizza dough, baking a chocolate cake from scratch, perfecting the art of creating snow angels, working on our snowball aim and warming up with a beer at our favorite neighborhood bar, Buschenschank.
