Greetings from South Dakota

I’m currently flying over South Dakota in route to San Francisco!

My morning started earlier than normal with a 4:45 wakeup call. By 5:15 I was out the door on my way to JFK Airport.

It’s definitely weird to leave the house wearing flats, jeans, and a long sleeve t-shirt in the middle of summer. But, the weather outlook for San Francisco is far cooler than New York City. The below forecast is why my bag is packed with more long sleeve shirts and cardigans than sleeveless dresses.

I’m only in San Francisco for 30 hours, literally. My schedule is jam packed but I’m crazy enough to try and find time to meet up with Katherine, who happens to be in San Francisco. Tomorrow morning, dark and early, I’m getting my weekly long run out of the way in beautiful San Francisco. Don’t worry, I’m not crazy. I have no plans of doing hill work during this long run. Instead, we’re going to stick to the Embarcadero as much as possible and enjoy views of ships, seals, and a San Francisco sunrise.

I debated doing my long run in Chicago, since I’m heading straight there from San Francisco. But, the temperature outlook wasn’t quite as inviting and I’m sure that my jet lag will be in full swing by Friday morning. Instead, I’ll enjoy a shake out run along Lake Michigan Friday morning along the same route Bo and I enjoyed during last year’s Healthy Living Summit. I wouldn’t miss these views for the life of me!

Luckily, I had a few minutes to grab breakfast and a snack for the flight after I made it through security.

The airport was definitely quieter than normal at this hour which made it seem peaceful and tranquil, far different than the scene travelers will see a few hours later.

Since my dreams of an upgrade were crushed once again, I’m sitting three to a row and enjoying breakfast above America’s heartland.

I’m going to save the banana for a mid morning snack since Biscoff and pretzels don’t sound too appetizing at 10am.

Have a wonderful day and until I check in from San Francisco, I hope you enjoy today’s Marathon+Moderation guest post from Evan!

Question: What is your favorite healthy airport snack?

A Fresh, New Month

Happy Monday! In case you are just catching up from the weekend, it was a busy one.

Friday we explored the Hudson River by sailboat!

Saturday I had a humbling Queens Half Marathon experience that doubled as a long training run.

Saturday night we celebrated Bo’s 27th birthday at Birreria

Yesterday was spent relaxing! After a 45 minute yoga session yesterday morning, I spent the rest of the day enjoying How I Met Your Mother and The Sopranos while perched on the sofa between Meg and Bo.

It was 100% bliss and exactly what I wanted.

Today, however, is a fresh week and month! It’s August which means there is a lot of fun adventures!

  • Business travel will take me to San Francisco, Chicago, and Cincinnati this month!
  • My teenage dream of seeing Brittney Spears in concert is finally coming true on Friday!
  • Theodora, Cynthia, and I are speaking at Healthy Living Summit!
  • Lauren & Casey are finally tying the knot and I get to be a part of their amazing day!
  • By the end of the month my long runs will be up to the 17 mile point! This is exciting and scary!

This morning I started my 3rd week of New York City Marathon training with a 5k run on the treadmill. My training plan called for 5 miles but my legs were still a bit tight and tired after Saturday’s half marathon. Therefore, I’m going to squeeze in the last two miles by running home this evening. Breakfast was delicious, as usual, though I switched it up a bit by adding more cinnamon than normal and adding a cup of coffee on the side. Don’t worry, that huge cup of coffee is at least 1/3 milk, my favorite way to enjoy coffee.

Come back this evening for my 7 Links post and a great Road ID giveaway to help you stay safe while you’re out and about!

Have a great Monday! I’ll leave you with this awesome quote I received via email from Runner’s World!

When I run, my mind and body fuse together, creating an energy source that empowers me. Gail W. Kislevitz

Oven Beer Can Chicken

First of all, thank you so much for the sweet comments, emails, and notes about the changes taking place right now in our world.

It was definitely unusual waking up alone this morning for my workout. I’m accustomed to having a gym and commute buddy each day so it was a bit lonely. To avoid hitting the snooze button since I don’t have anyone to hold me accountable, I may have set my phone alarm for 5:40, 5:42, and 5:45. Success!

IMG_3349 (480x640)Due to a change in schedule with my trainer, I did my 3 mile run and spin today. There wasn’t a class that worked with my schedule so I just hopped on a spin bike and did my own thing for 20 minutes.

My legs felt a bit tight this morning after the workout so I spent a few minutes icing with vegetables because I’m classy like that.

IMG_3350 (478x640) The rest of my day was uneventful, other than the fact that I captured a picture of EVERYTHING I ate for the first time in ages. A few readers have requested that I make my daily food a more regular feature on the blog. I’m going to give it a try for a few days and see how I feel. I’m also definitely open to feedback.

IMG_3188 (478x640) Breakfast included oatmeal, banana, cinnamon, and 1/2 scoop of vanilla protein powder. I also enjoyed a cool and refreshing iced green tea on the side. Did you know that if you save your cup and you have a Gold Card, you get free refills at Starbucks?

My stomach was growling 30 minutes before we stepped out for lunch so I enjoyed my homemade fruit cup of strawberries and grapefruit.

I tried a new salad combination today at lunch and loved the heartiness, flavor, and variety.

IMG_3367 (640x478) IMG_3369 (640x478) Today’s mix included grilled chicken, beets, baby spinach, 1/2 portion blue cheese, red onions, chopped tomatoes, celery, salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. On the side I enjoyed Baked Ruffles.

I knew Bo and I would be eating dinner later tonight since I had an after work appointment, so I bit into a juicy peach around 4!

IMG_3368 (640x478)  My after work appointment was a facial!

IMG_3370 (640x478) IMG_3376 (480x640) IMG_3377 (640x478) Melissa makes fun of my spa obsessions but appointments like this are a great way to relax. Also, I wouldn’t say getting a massage once a month makes me an addict, but if it does, I’m okay with that.  I only get a facial once or twice a year so it’s a relaxing treat that also has wonderful side affects. In full disclosure, I’m working with Equinox to put together a special promotion for local New Yorkers but will also be doing a more in depth post regarding skin care and some of the things I learned today. The good news is a lot of the tips and tricks were free or very inexpensive!

The best part of the day though, was walking through the door to the smell of grilled chicken! Holy goodness! Who knew you could make beer can chicken in your oven?! IMG_3392 (640x478)

Tonight’s dinner included:

  • Butter lettuce salad with chopped tomatoes, red onion, salt, pepper, and Trader Joes Parmesan Ranch dressing
  • Beer Can Chicken made in the oven using our cast iron pan
  • Grilled squash and zucchini

IMG_3388 (640x478) IMG_3386 (640x478) IMG_3387 (640x478) IMG_3390 (640x478) Clearly it was a delicious dinner enjoyed by both of us.

Last but not least, a portion controlled dessert to answer my screaming sweet tooth.

IMG_3393 (478x640) Question: Do you enjoy the more thorough food pictures which document everything I eat?
