Geneva Triathlon Training– A Perfect Week

Even though I was able to squeeze in two rest days, last week was still a perfect training week! I kept up my yoga practice, logged 17 quality miles of running, tested my endurance in the pool, and overcame a huge fear that has loomed over me for three years. While I wish that every week of training was like this I’m a realist and know that over the next few weeks I’ll hit some rough patches. But, one thing is for sure – the rough weeks make the good ones so much sweeter and the good weeks make me feel better during the bad weeks.

Monday: Rest day!

Tuesday: Another awesome Tuesday double workout including a tough morning swim followed by an evening of yoga.  The AM swim was made a bit easier due to the awesome views from the pool but it was the hardest to date due to more than 1,000 of my 1,700 meters being endurance laps. We had a substitute for yoga and the class wasn’t as solid as normal but an hour of power yoga is always good for the soul.

Wednesday: I celebrated National Running day with a three solo, rainy miles on the trail. It wasn’t a great run but I still left the office and enjoyed the river views and tranquil trail atmosphere.

Thursday: Rest day!

Friday: The biggest thing I’ve missed since marathon training are my long runs with Emily. Our early morning, pre-work long runs are the perfect venue to catch up, vent about work and talk about our weekend plans all while enjoying beautiful views. This 7 mile long run was humbling and reminded me that one day a week, marathon training is about going long and slow. Yes, I know that’s what she said but that is also what I did not do on Friday. Pace was 9:32 which was 20 seconds faster than prescribed pace. Better luck next time?

Saturday: In preparation for next month’s triathlon Bo and I enjoyed our first long ride together along the lake. The views were gorgeous, the weather was perfect and I only have one huge bruise on my leg as a result of my first attempt to ride clipped. Theodora has a post coming that will talk about her tips for clipping in but let’s just say it helps to practice with only one foot clipped in, especially if you’re riding in a busy area. The heat and hills made us feel as if we’d gone further but in the end our ride was 15 miles, not as far as we hoped but still a great first ride.

Sunday: After spending 12 hours enjoying a bit too much wine on Saturday, I discovered that cycling is the perfect hangover workout! I sweat out all the wine while we pushed through a 20 mile bike ride up the lake to Hermance, a nearby tiny lake town. By the end of our ride it was 90 degrees but knowing we had the lake to jump into following the ride helped me push through the last hill. We kept a good for us pace and I was fully clipped for 15 of the miles! Talk about an endorphin high – accomplishing this goal and overcoming my fear of falling was such a huge win for me in the world of triathlon training! I am thankful for Bo’s patience as he helped me practice on Saturday and Sunday!

What was your favorite workout last week? Mine was definitely our bike ride to Hermance!

An Intense Bike Tour of Manhattan

Yesterday’s adventures were unbelievable and intense! When we woke up, after eight hours of sleep, Bo asked if I’d consider doing a long bike ride instead of a long run since he’s training for his first triathlon! I was apprehensive at first but as soon as I saw the glorious weather and had some motivation from Theodora who was also embarking on a long ride, I said of course!

After breakfast we headed up town to Pedal Pushers bike shop. The staff at Pedal Pushers were super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful! We went in there ready to rent road bikes for the day including clips and the whole nine yards. Unbeknownst to me, clips are scary shit! After getting the requisite lecture about the dangers of biking in New York City and how much cab drivers hate bikers, I was more than a little fearful. Bo on the other hand was ready for clips and excited for the adventure. For once, I listened to my gut and brain and opted to get a bike with cages instead of clips.

IMG_0694Our route wasn’t planned very clearly, instead we just went wherever we felt. We started with a loop in Central Park before exiting in Harlem and heading towards Riverside Park.

Fleet week and the tourists made riding on the Hudson River Parkway less than desirable but I had one thing on my mind, a cold smoothie!

Thirty miles later we were exhausted but excited for many more long rides in New York. Now we just have to find a better path next time!

We also learned a few things from yesterday’s ride:

  1. If you want to get serious about riding, experiencing a road bike is very important. But, you need to be confident of your abilities before embarking on a long ride in a congested area. Bo felt more confident and therefore chose to go with cages but I on the other hand, just wanted to become comfortable with a road bike versus dealing with clips too.
  2. Be sure to wear the proper attire! Having padded bike shorts on made the ride far more enjoyable for both us and I was still sore at the end! They don’t cure everything but they definitely help!
  3. Carry plenty of water and fuel because YOU will sweat and you will work your body. I’ve always figured that riding a bike was easier than running but there were points yesterday, when I was keeping a 16 mph pace on an incline and was amazed how tough it was. I loved it and was happy I had my Camelbak for easy water access.
  4. If you’re cycling with someone else, have a plan because it’s tough to stay within speaking distance of each other. We started the ride without a plan and quickly got separated which made for a stressful situation. Even though we had our phones, it is IMPOSSIBLE to ride a road bike and talk at the same time on the streets of Manhattan.

Starting the Long Weekend Right

Happy Memorial Day weekend! The Empire State Building is sporting red white and blue to honor our troops this weekend!

Needless to say, I didn’t get to enjoy that happy hour I talked about yesterday. I left the office at 4pm though which is definitely earlier than most days so I was still able to enjoy some of the “summer Friday.” After leaving work I tried a “new to us” class at New York Health and Racquet club, MELT Method, with Melissa. We were definitely the youngest people in the class by at least 20 years but it did relieve a great deal of the tension I was holding in my feet and shoulders!

After the class, to my surprise, Bo made sure that my cute outfit wasn’t put to waste by making dinner reservations for us! We started the weekend with a fun, relaxed date at BLT Fish Shack in the Flatiron District. The service and food were both wonderful and exactly what we wanted. We enjoyed a few items from the raw bar and then split appetizers for our main course. There really is nothing better, in my humble opinion, than fresh seafood and a good beer on a Friday night.

This morning, I slept in until 9 and upon waking realized that my body is definitely feeling the last two days of workouts! Between Physique 57 DVD, swimming 3/4 of a mile, doing a TABATA running and lifting workout with my trainer yesterday, and rolling out my body at MELT today’s planned long run isn’t happening! Instead, I enjoyed a breakfast of champions with Bo in preparation for a 25 mile bike ride up the Hudson River Parkway.

Picture from last year’s biking adventure!

I’m going to enjoy a beach trip with friends tomorrow as my rest day and then do a long run Monday morning.

Overall, I think this is going to be one perfect long weekend!
