Marathons+Moderation Guest Post #27

Hello Healthy, Happier Bear Readers! When Ashley asked me to be a guest blogger on her awesome blog, I was ecstatic! I am a newbie blogger (just over 3 months) and really love “meeting” other runners through the virtual world.

My name is Michele and I blog at nycrunningmama. I am the mother of a happy 1-year old boy and wife to my best friend. I have been running for most of my life (in order to stay in shape for the sports I was involved in) but didn’t really fall in love with running until I was deployed to Iraq. Running became my “me” time during each of my deployments – although I was pushing my body, I was resting my mind, so I happily looked forward to my daily runs. You can find out more about me and read my bio on my blog!

If you would have asked me three years ago about Marathon + Moderation, I would have probably told you that those two words do not go together. I was single, living in an apartment two blocks from Central Park and had no real obligations other than a very flexible job. I was able to run whenever I wanted and for however long I wanted. I was comfortable and happy to log upwards of 60-70 miles/week. Life was good. Most days, I would run however long my body felt like running – 8, 10, 12 miles. I very rarely had anything that required me to cut my run short – so if I chose to extend my run to two hours, I could.

Fast forward to today.

I find myself trying to juggle logging the necessary miles with being a stay-at-home mom, blogging, working on my pre/post-natal exercise specialist certification, cleaning, cooking, and other chores around/for the home. My “free” time is limited. I no longer have the luxury of running whenever and however far I feel like.

clip_image004

What does this mean?

I am no longer able to waste my time running “empty” miles. Nowadays, each mile has to matter and every run has to have a purpose. Every. Single. One.

I’ve been forced to get smarter with my training. It was a necessity – after my son was born, I realized I was lucky to squeeze in a 30-45 min run a few days a week. Whether it was due to my decision to be an on-demand nursing mother or simply because I couldn’t bear to be away from my son for very long, I no longer had the freedom to just run.

In an ideal world, I would be a sponsored elite runner with no obligations preventing me from running twice a day and logging as many miles as my body permits. But, I have no hopes of running even remotely close to a sub-2:30 anytime soon. So, being smart with my *moderated* miles is key for me.

clip_image006

These days I hope to run 6x days/week. I have three quality runs that are the essential workouts to my training – speed, tempo, and long runs. The other three runs are recovery/easy days to get more miles in while giving my legs and body a rest. Although it’s a training plan, it’s a flexible one that allows me to easily skip a day and rearrange as necessary. But, at a minimum, I make sure that I complete my three quality runs – they will be the runs that affect my pace during the marathon.

clip_image008

I am currently logging considerably less miles (about 20-30% less) than I was a few years ago. And despite that, I am actually faster than I was. My goal time for my spring marathon (NJ Marathon) is sub-3:10, almost 12 minutes faster than my previous PR. I’ve dropped close to 20 seconds off my mile PR. And I completed my first ultra in November (Knickerbocker 60k). I am proof that you can lower your mileage and improve your times at the same time.

clip_image010

Regardless of what constraints you have in your life – child/children, work, time – you CAN train for a marathon without logging an obscene number of miles. The secret is ensuring that every mile (and minute) you run is important – don’t waste them!

Craft Restaurant

Saturday night, after hours of reclaiming our apartment from the Christmas decorations and clutter, Bo and I decided we deserved a date night reward. However, deciding at 7pm on a Saturday night that you want to go out to dinner in New York City isn’t the easiest thing. Even the lowest rated restaurants seem to be packed on this night of the week when anyone and everyone in New York City seems to dine out. There is even a weekly post dedicated to restaurants with last minute Saturday night availability each week!

image It’s pretty incredible and insane at the same time. Therefore, last night as we paged through the New York Magazine’s recent restaurant edition, where Adam Platt proclaims his favorite 101 New York restaurants, we figured we had no chance in hell squeezing into one last minute.

Lucky for us, we were wrong!

Just down the block from our apartment sits the 5th restaurant on his list, Craft. Last night, they were able to graciously offer us to the last two seats at their beautiful bar, next to the plating area.

The atmosphere at Craft was sophisticated but not stuffy. It struck the perfect balance between being a serious and sophisticated space without reaching the level of a coat and tie restaurant. I especially loved the leather layered wall which brought a warm brown hue to the restaurant. In addition, adding to the atmosphere and experience, every waiter, hostess, and bartender we encountered was beyond friendly and very helpful.

When enjoying dinner at their bar, the bartender also serves as your waiter. Luckily last night our waiter and bartender for the evening was very knowledgeable about the menu and his service was impeccable, in line with what you would expect of a restaurant of this caliber. He never hovered but was still attentive and served everything in a timely manner.

032Upon sitting down we were quickly greeted by their bread basket. Very basic in nature, the hunks of wheat and white bread and salted butter were delicious.

033 The kitchen presented us with an amuse bouche, a cauliflower soup with a truffle oil drizzle.

035

The soup was rich and creamy so the small portion was the perfect amount. In fact, the people next to us requested that this soup be made into an appetizer portion after seeing ours. I have no idea how they ate such a large portion.

Whenever we go to restaurants, we each often order items which we rarely cook at home. The appetizer menu featured two items we rarely conquer: artichokes and quail.

The artichoke and fennel salad was simple but delicious, cooked tender and drizzled in olive oil and fennel seed, paired with peppers and tomatoes.

037Bo’s quail with aged balsamic was perfectly crispy on the outside but tender on the inside and seasoned perfectly. Though we were only one course through our meal, the appetizers stood out as they ensured that Tom Colicchio carries his mantra from Top Chef, “season your food” to his restaurants through the food.  Even the simplest of foods were seasoned perfectly and each flavor lasted on our tongue.

038Choosing an entree from the Craft menu is an arduous task as they provide way too many options. Twelve options across both meat and fish left us both clueless as everything sounded delicious. Therefore, we trusted our waiter with our entree. We asked him what the most popular fish and meat dishes were. After his description of the steelhead trout with lemon and the guinea hen and black truffles we knew we couldn’t go wrong.

The trout, cooked rare, resembled salmon more than trout when first presented. I was a bit hesitant as I wasn’t sure I’d like trout this way but after one bite I was convinced and confused. The lemon and caper flavor was perfect for the meaty trout. While it was delicious, it reminded me a bit too much of capers and lox to order again.

039

Bo’s guinea fowl on the other hand was rich and delicious with a nice pan jus. The dark meat was more like duck confit but with more gamey taste. According to the waiter this is one of the dishes that has made Craft so famous. In addition to these two entrees, we enjoyed the hen of the woods mushrooms and brussels sprouts on the side. I would go back tomorrow for those mushrooms alone if I could.  They were sautéed in garlic and butter and then quickly seared to a light crisp under a broiler. 040After seeing desserts plated all evening, there was no way we could pass up an evening treat. We couldn’t decide between the donuts, which are the house specialty, and their delicious arrays of sorbets so decided to indulge and order both. Much to our waist line’s appreciation we also agreed that we would not eat all of the dessert. We each limited ourselves to one spoonful of sorbet and one (or two) donuts. This worked out perfectly, and while it wasn’t the price conscious choice, it left us full but not sick.

The sugar and spice donuts are homemade and delicious but didn’t stand out in my mind. Many restaurants have donuts on their menu and these were nothing special. In addition, the dark chocolate and the lemon curd dips were just too strong for the sweet, delicate donuts.

043

The surprising winner was the sorbet and ice cream. We chose three flavors: earl grey, coconut, and roasted pear. Our favorite was the coconut sorbet and our least favorite was the way too strong earl grey.  042Whether you’re visiting New York City or are a long time local, I highly recommend snagging a table at Craft for your next special evening. Their seven course tasting menu, priced at $120 per person, would make the perfect evening with a special group of friends or loved one!

I am already looking for an excuse to return to Craft Restaurant!

A 20 Minute Sweat with Chris Powell

Even though I work out with a personal trainer two times per week, I still look forward to any opportunity to try new workouts and push my body in unique ways. Thanks to Google Places, I had the opportunity to break a sweat with Chris Powell, the trainer and mastermind behind Extreme Makeover: Weight loss Edition, on Friday night.

Google Places is a great resources which allows you to rate and share your favorite places on Google. In addition, the power of Google Places is that it also can begin recommending places to you based on the places you’ve liked previously. If you follow Google Places on Twitter, you can find out about the many different events they host in New York each week. Don’t worry, this isn’t limited to NYC. There are many Google handles for large US cities such as Boston.

imageFriday night’s event was held at the 24 Hour Fitness in SOHO, a gym I’d never visited before. Even though I belonged to 24 Hour Fitness for a hot second when we moved to the city, I only tried the midtown location near my office. The SOHO location was pretty amazing in comparison. The energy was high for a Friday night as the gym was filled with people busting out a sweat before going out.  I could get used to views like this during an evening treadmill run, couldn’t you?

Before the workout, I told Melissa that I was a bit nervous since I had a 10k planned for Saturday morning and was still a bit sore from my Thursday personal training workout. She advised that I take the class at my own pace and have fun. Good advice Melissa, I’ll just smile and give everyone thumbs up!

IMG_3137

All joking aside, this entire fitness experience was pretty amazing. Less than an hour from start to finish, I started out hesitant and unaware of Chris Powell’s claim to fame but left inspired, sweaty, sore, and wanting to go home and watch all Chris Powell’s TV spots! This guy is seriously inspiring!

The event started with a brief opening by Chris during which he discussed his background and experiences.

image His goal in life is helping people understand how to appreciate and push their own machine, the human body. He has been featured on a TLC special, 650 pound Virgin, The Oprah Winfrey Show, 20×20, and now ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Weight loss Edition.

His wife, whom he adores, is a trainer as well and part of his team on a daily basis! As he discussed the evening’s 20 minute workout, she demonstrated each of the four exercises. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly some people can rebound from pregnancy, especially if they are the epitome of health when they go into the pregnancy. She gave birth to their third child less than 6 months ago and still rocked out some amazing burpees and squat thrusts!

IMG_3147

The 20 minute workout sounded simple at first. For 20 minutes, without stopping, complete the following exercises as you move through the stations:

  • 75 high knees
  • burpees with a pushup
  • sit-ups(standard or butterfly)
  • squat thrust with overhead press
  • cheer while you rest

The person who was doing the 75 high knees during each round was the “pacer” and as long as it took them to complete the 75 was how long we’d be doing each of the other exercises. Chris and Heidi walked around during the 20 minutes ensuring everyone was using proper form even as they pushed and rushed through the exercises. Let me tell you something, multiple rounds of high knees will leave your calves screaming the next day, especially since it’s a muscle many of us don’t work that often unless you run hills on a daily basis.

We were divided into teams as Heidi and Chris believe that team motivation is key in getting through any arduous workout. For 20 minutes the room was one blur of movement with more than 5 teams pushing themselves to the edge.

image imageimage

The great thing about this exercise is that it’s something you could easily modify for a home workout by using dumbbells instead of a weight bar. Or, you could grab an empty studio at your gym and do the exact workout.  Our team of ladies was a fun bunch and we all did a great job screaming and pushing each other through.

IMG_3162

The entire group had a blast even though we all came from different backgrounds and interests. Some people were 24 hour fitness trainers, others were GoogleNYC followers, while a few of us were health bloggers. In fact, Melissa and I thought we were the only health bloggers there but later realized that the girl wearing the Skinny Runner t-shirt is Katie of Slowly but Surely, a blog I’ve read previously!

image Thank you to Chris Powell and Google Places for letting us break a sweat and get inspired on a Friday night with a great group of people! I had a blast and have a few new workouts to add to my own workouts each day!
