Frank & Melissa Say I Do

What an incredible weekend!

There really is nothing better than celebrating a couple’s marriage. It provides a time to see familiar faces, meet new people, honor good friends, reminisce, dance the night away, and stay out too late!  This weekend in Saratoga Springs we had a great time with not only Frank and Melissa but also their friends. By the end of the weekend when we said goodbye to everyone we left with new friends in London along with a rekindled friendship with Gena whom we met years ago through Melissa.

I kicked off yesterday’s festivities around 8am with Melissa for a walk around Saratoga Springs. It gave us some time to catch up, just the two of us, and reminisce on the wonderful relationship she and Frank have enjoyed. Melissa was my first New York City friend whom I met just a week after moving to the city back in 2009. Frank came into her life just 6 months later so Bo and I have had the opportunity to get to know Frank over the years and consider them close friends.

IMG_3324 After our walk we met Gena for a morning juice and smoothie before the chaos of the day took over. Saratoga Juice Bar is a small juice bar in the middle of Saratoga Springs main street, Broadway, which serves cold pressed juices along with delicious smoothies from 9am until 9pm each day. Per Melissa’s recommendation, I bought the popular Saratoga Detox and Spirit of Life to enjoy during the day.IMG_3326IMG_3328For breakfast, we each ordered a smoothie, taking advantage of their many options and add-ins. I ordered the Just Breathe smoothie (kale, spinach, mango, pineapple, banana and soy milk) adding flax seeds and substituting soy milk for almond milk.

IMG_3330At 10am the bridesmaids met in the bridal suite for a morning of primping and priming. I wish I had brought all my bridesmaids together in a suite the morning of the wedding for hair and makeup versus going to a salon. While I’m sure it is quite expensive, it is so much fun to enjoy a relaxing morning with the entire bridal party! The team did both hair and makeup which made it quick and easy for them to rotate through the bridesmaids and family. They were more than happy to accommodate our group’s many requests which included everything from no hairspray to Pinterest inspired looks. Melissa put a lot of thought into the morning and the room, wanting to ensure that everyone would have fun. There was a “getting ready playlist” she made which included requests from each of us along with lots of snacks, drinks, and plenty of seating.IMG_3350IMG_3347Since I knew the side bun hairstyle I wore for Meghann’s wedding was not only flattering but also lasted all day, I asked them to replicate a similar style. The result included a fun braid which helped it stay up longer and add a unique edge to the style. Both Gena and I sported it until the early morning hours with no issues.

IMG_3362For the makeup, I requested a natural glow with a accentuated eyes to ensure that my makeup matched the black tie wedding. When paired with my silk duponi black bridesmaid dress and the beautiful bouquet the look came together just as I hoped!IMG_3384Melissa was the scene stealer all day long. She was radiant from morning until night, smiling with excitement to finally marry Frank and looking absolutely stunning in her lace gown. IMG_3356IMG_3372 After hair and makeup our the bridal party headed to three different locations for the first look followed by pictures. We rode a carousel and posed among the vibrant fall foliage while capturing two hours worth of photos. It was colder than any of us expected so the swig of whiskey the groomsmen offered me on the trolley was more than welcome. We made our way to the church just in time for a quick bathroom stop before lining up for the procession. Everything went off perfectly and an hour later we toasted the happy couple on the trolley before heading to the reception site.

IMG_3398Their reception was breathtaking. The space was quite large which could easily be overwhelming but instead they filled it with vibrant lights, flowers and large table decor. IMG_3406 Before the guests enjoyed the reception they were escorted to a cocktail hour including delicious heavy appetizers and a Mexican taqueria bar including guacamole, quesadillas and margaritas!IMG_3411  IMG_3403 After cocktail hour we moved into the reception hall for a sit down dinner, toasts, and four hours of dancing! The salad and the harvest stuffed portobello mushroom was restaurant quality while the gelato bar was such a fun treat including a gentleman who took orders and served the gelato to each guest behind an actual gelato case! IMG_3415IMG_3418 But the main event was definitely the dancing! The dance floor was packed for three straight hours. More than 100 guests spent hours dancing to the music list Melissa and Frank put together for the DJ. We were all thankful for the large dance floor which allowed for true dancing versus akward movement in tight quarters. IMG_3416 IMG_3433 IMG_3450IMG_3438Thank you for an amazing evening Frank & Melissa! Bo and I wish we had a fun party like this every weekend!

Frank & Melissa’s Saratoga Springs Wedding Weekend

Greetings from gorgeous Saratoga Springs, New York! Fall has definitely arrived in upstate New York! We are in town this weekend to celebrate Frank & Melissa as they are saying “I Do” today!

Fall in Saratoga Our drive from New York City to Saratoga took about 3 hours due to some unruly New York City traffic. IMG_3298Having 3 hours in the car with Bo was a blast as it gave us some time to reflect on our time in New York City and of course sing along to music on the radio. While our time abroad hasn’t necessarily been easy, it has reaffirmed for us that we are a strong couple and have incredible friends and family who are a wonderful support network!

Yesterday I spent the afternoon with Melissa, helping her with a few last minute projects and finally catching up. We’ve been on such opposite schedules the past few months that we have barely talked other than email or Google Chat. It was great to have some quality time with she and her sister before the weekend festivities started.

IMG_3308 IMG_3306IMG_3310The rehearsal went off last night without a hitch and both Frank and Melissa were beaming with excitement!

IMG_3312The rehearsal dinner was held within walking distance of the hotel at Jacob & Anthony’s. The private dining area allowed for lots of mingling time between the guests which was especially convenient for us since we haven’t been able to attend all the pre-wedding festivities.    The rehearsal dinner also allowed me and Gena time to catch up as it’s been years since we saw each other! Gena, Melissa and I were all New York City bloggers back in the day and spent a lot of time together at blog events. We’ve missed Gena in the city since she moved down to DC! image IMG_3320There was definitely a group who stayed out late partying and celebrating but we decided to crash early so we can party hard tonight. I am so excited about dancing at their wedding tonight as I know Melissa has spent a great deal of time working on reception details and choosing songs for the DJ!

I’m off to grab green juice and coffee with Melissa and a few of the bridesmaids before the wedding hair, makeup and craziness begins! Hope you’re having a great weekend! Good luck to all of my friends who are in Pennsylvania for the Runner’s World race weekend!

Run, Work, Greens & Repeat

Happy Tuesday!

I hope you all had a good day. Instead of taking this week as vacation, I am working from my old office until Friday when we head up to Saratoga Springs for Melissa and Frank’s wedding weekend.

Before heading to the office I headed out to the streets for my first run since the marathon. I headed up Third Avenue and ran 3 miles at a relaxed pace while zoning out. I definitely don’t miss the smell of city garbage piled up on the sidewalks or crowded sidewalks as even at 6am I was dodging in and out of people and trash piles. My legs were a little tight, especially my right hamstring, but otherwise the run felt easy.

IMG_3252_thumb.jpgIt felt so surreal taking the 6 train and my old commute to work this morning. I’m so thankful for this experience to live abroad but I do miss New York City.

I left the office for a quick lunch around 1pm, eager to try Organic Avenue’s new fall menu items. I follow them on social media and immediately added their roasted squash and beet salad to my list of things to try this week. It exceeded my expectations! Per the suggestion of the staff, I drizzled the dressing on my salad as soon as I returned to the office but let it marinate for 10-15 minutes before eating. While the salad is definitely an expensive lunch option, it was a nutritious and filling treat.

Golden beets, roasted shallots, and aromatic fennel come together to create a perfect flavor combination. Hearty kabocha squash, thought to be a good source of beta-carotene, rounds out this salad that captures the essence of the cooler months.

After work I met Jen for another run. Our schedules are a bit different this week and the only time we could manage to meet up was this evening. Since she is a busy mom who fits running and training in between her busy family and work life, I thought that running her plan’s easy 4 miles with her was a perfect way to catch up. It also gave us a chance to enjoy some evening views along the Hudson River and perfect 55 degree weather.

IMG_3263IMG_3261We talked non-stop which made the miles fly! We had so much to catch up on including her marathon training, Staten Island Half Marathon and upcoming travel. I can’t believe that it’s almost been a year since we met! While a great deal has changed over the past year, she is still just as strong and inspiring as ever before. Whether she realized it or not, she gave me some great words of advice today during our run and I’m so thankful for this one on one time we had together.

After the run I spent the next 90 minutes on the massage table at 21st Street Equinox. I hadn’t booked any type of post marathon massage and after today’s 7 miles I knew that my legs would appreciate it and it would help with recovery. Luckily Carlos Blain had a last minute opening. This man worked magic on my legs and back by using a combination of massage therapy, physical therapy stretches and professional strength icy hot. He is a certified physical therapist by training but as his certification from Argentina didn’t transfer when he moved, he is practicing massage therapy in NYC.

IMG_3270Last but not least, I finally tried Juice Press! After hearing about their delicious juices and smoothies from Gia and Theodora this was another item on my list this week. A Turmeric Sports Tonic and The Love of Kale Salad was the perfect dinner tonight while catching up on this week’s Homeland. The turmeric has healing effects while also being a natural immune booster, perfect for my body post marathon. The manager suggested that this would help with my muscle repair and hydration after the deep tissue massage as well. The salad consisted of kale, arugula, tomatoes, raisins, carrots, and quinoa along with a garlic and tahini dressing which also included a hint of mint. Delicious! Why did this open just 3 blocks from our old apartment AFTER we moved?

Overall, today was a pretty perfect day. I hope I continue to have opportunities that bring me back to New York City a few times a year as it’s nice to reconnect with good friends and colleagues while also trying some new restaurants and workouts.

Are you a kale fan? If so, how do you prepare it at home? I need some recipe suggestions so I can keep the love alive in Geneva!
