Friday Favorites – May 18th, 2018

Happy Friday! I hope you all have had a good week. We had lots of rain in New York City this week but I am thrilled that we’ll be down in Savannah this time next week, enjoying warm weather and sunshine! A little quality time with family and some sunshine is exactly what I’m craving! Tonight we are relaxing at home with a movie and then tomorrow we are heading to New Jersey to meet our friends’ new baby boy! I’m excited to get some newborn baby snuggles. It’s already hard to remember Katie being that small.  Sunday I’m catching up with my friend Mary over a morning run and then Bo and I are going to be smart and spend a bit of time packing for our upcoming trip. I’ll be in Arkansas Wednesday and Thursday for work and then will fly directly to Savannah to meet he and Katie. That means that this weekend we need to pack everything for Savannah so he doesn’t have to worry about packing in addition to flying solo with her.

Now, let’s dive into this week’s edition of Friday Favorites, including recipes, articles, posts and other things that caught my eye this week.

  • The picture above has made me smile so many times this week as have the rest of the images Michelle sent over earlier this week following a mini-shoot we did with her in Prospect Park. It has been so fun to work with her as she now knows our style, best angles and personalities. If you’re based in New York or New Jersey, I highly recommend Michelle for any of your photography needs – she’s amazing!
  • After using it for a few weeks, I can say that I’m loving Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollowood Flawless filter highlighter. A little bit goes a long way as I dab a bit in between my eyes and on my cheeks but the result is a subtle but gorgeous glow! If you like lighter, more dewy coverage, I know some people where this as their foundation instead of using it as a highlighter.
  • I shared these Tory Burch Miller Leather Logo sandals on Instagram the other night and had no less than 40 of y’all comment that they are your favorite summer sandal! I’ve eyed them for years as a few of my good friends swear by them but have had a hard time rationalizing the price. Luckily, a Saks gift card was hanging out in my wallet and this was the perfect way to use it! I’ve worn them twice already and love that they can easily be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion!
  • I can’t believe that this dress is now on sale for $49! The flattering, floral dress is long enough for work but fun enough for the weekend. I’ve worn it with a jean jacket and sandals as well as flats and a sweater and every time I wear it I get compliments. It’s available in petite, regular and tall so it works for just about anyone!
  • I’ve had three nail polish colors on rotation recently – a perfect nude that lasts forever, a fun vibrant pink and this funky purple.
  • I love getting emails and comments from you all after you try a product I recommend and this one is definitely the reader favorite right now.  The Revlon Oval One-Step Hair Dryer still amazes me in its ability to dry and smooth my hair in less than ten minutes. It’s simple to use, even for someone like me who has zero round brush skills.  It has over 500 reviews on Ulta and the average review is 4.5 stars which is proof that it’s a winner.  I will say that I found the cheezy video on Ulta’s site really helpful to watch before using it the first time but now, a few months later, I’ve figured out the method that works best for my hair.
  • If you find yourself shopping at multiple stores in order to get the best price on groceries, you may find this article that compares the price of groceries at four different retailers, interesting.
  • I have so much respect for Michele’s work ethic and each time that I’ve had the pleasure to spend time with her I find myself inspired and dreaming of achieving just a portion of what she has accomplished. Warning, you may be exhausted by the end of the article but you’ll also gain a few tips to apply to your own life!
  • We whipped up this healthy Mediterranean Quinoa Salad as a side dish earlier this week and have been enjoying leftovers all week. The flavors only get better with time and I love that you can choose to add protein to make it a main dish or stick with the feta and vegetables when serving it as a side dish.

The Days Are Long But The Years Are Short

During those first few exhausting but magical weeks after Katie was born, many people reminded that “the days are long, but the years are short.” Becoming a mother is such a gift, but it comes with so many unknowns. Luckily, the joy and tender moments that began in those first weeks have continued and balance out the fear and feeling of being overwhelmed.   • Holding Katie in our arms

I was still in disbelief that after years of talking about have a family of our own and months of planning, our blessing was finally in our arms.

  • Nursing

I remember sitting in the cold hospital bed, so clueless and confused, cradling Katie in my arms, while praying that she would naturally latch to my breast and not cry. Those first few nursing sessions in the hospital were stressful but seemed successful. It wasn’t until a few days later, at our first pediatrician visit, that we realized I didn’t have enough milk supply to keep our growing girl fed. Regardless of how difficult those first few days and weeks were due to insufficient glandular tissue, I do not regret the three months I dedicated to nursing Katie.

  • Milk drunk naps

That sweet smile and look of contentment that was frequently on Katie’s face when she’d fall asleep in our arms during or after a feeding session made me feel such joy and appreciation.   • Smiles

For those first few weeks of parenthood, you give so much to this small person but do not get any confirmation or affirmation. That first smile, even though it was barely a full smile, brought tears to my eyes.

  • Finding her voice.

I remember texting Bo a video while he was at work saying that one of Jurassic Park’s dinosaurs was loose in our home. When Katie discovered her voice and the high pitch squeak she was able to make, she wouldn’t stop. As if the sound amazed her, she would do it constantly throughout the day whether I was near her or while she was napping. Luckily, like so many things with babies, it was a phase that passed quickly.

  • Introducing solids

We were so excited to start giving Katie solids that I remember we specifically planned to do it when Bo and I could both be there to experience the fun and mess. Seeing her curiosity and expression after trying a new food perfectly reflects Katie’s personality – curious, thoughtful, and happy.

  • Learning to splash

Even at a young age, Katie loved bath time. We always do bath time right before her last bottle and it is the perfect transition from our evening playtime to the calm of bedtime. Around the time she was five months old, Katie started splashing and enjoying the water so much that she would get upset when we started putting the toys away and drying her after bath time. That first night, when she finally responded to my splashes, was such a treat. Even though I was quickly covered in water, she refused to stop and giggled and smiled for the next few minutes while she kept splashing. Needless to say, these days bath time is a 15-20 minute activity in our household.

  • Standing up

These days Katie is constantly on the move and pushing her body to do new things each day. Lately, standing up assisted by either furniture or people, makes her smile and giggle. I’m not sure if it’s the new perspective or just her satisfaction with this new accomplishment but that smile warms my heart.

  • Interacting with nature

After a long cold weather, it was so special to spend time in the park with Katie last weekend. While we had to watch her every move, seeing her reach for flowers, dig in the dirt and watch the birds was such a joy!

Miso Honey Butter Glazed Fish Recipe

As you all know, my husband Bo loves to cook.  You can find him in the kitchen every weekend and during vacations whipping up meals and brainstorming new recipes. For him it is both a stress reliever and hobby. This week, while he enjoyed a week off from work, he asked me for any dinner requests since he was hoping to cook each night.

Always a fan of seafood, I requested an Asian seafood dish. Bo bought the ingredients on Sunday, in hopes of cooking an elaborate dish Monday night. Unfortunately, Katie came down with another round of croup which meant the start of our week was focused on comforting her. Instead of an elaborate dish he created this recipe in just minutes and upon tasting it, we both decided that this marinade and the recipe is one of our new favorite dishes.

While he used the glaze on snapper, it could work on almost any fish, especially cod, sea bass or salmon.

Miso Butter Glazed Snapper

Glaze Ingredients
4 tablespoons butter
2.5 tablespoons white miso paste
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar

  • Soften butter then whisk all ingredients together until well combined.

Fish Marinade
1 cup sake
1 cup mirin
2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
2 tablespoons grape seed or other neutral oil

  • Whisk marinade ingredients together.
  • Score snapper on skin side, perpendicular to the filet.
  • Place in marinade and refrigerate for 30 minutes – 2 hours.
  • Heat enough oil to coat large skillet to medium high heat, place fillets skin side down when oil is hot.
  • Press fillets down on pan with spatula to prevent curling.
  • Cook for 4-6 minute, until skin crispy.
  • Transfer to broiler pan (preheated high) and brush each fillet with 2 tablespoons miso honey butter glaze.
  • Place under high broiler until glaze speckled brown in spots, remove and plate then drizzle remaining liquid from broiler pan on top of fish.
  • Serve with rice and roasted green beans and sprinkling of sesame seeds.
