NYRR Jingle Jog Recap aka Mom’s First NYRR Race

NYRR Jingle Jog

On Saturday, my mom participated and completed her first New York Road Runners race! As you can see from our faces, the morning was a great success.

I’ll be the first to admit, when my mom asked if she could do the NYRR Jingle Jog 4 mile race with me, I was worried. While I’ve completed more than 50 different New York Road Runner events over the years, I’ve always run or jogged. I wasn’t sure what the experience would be like for someone who wanted to “wog” or walk/jog the event.

We headed to Prospect Park around 8:30 since we needed to pick up our bibs and didn’t know how long the lines for bib pick up or the bathrooms would be since this race also included a children’s portion.IMG_0013

As soon as we arrived, my mom was excited and amazed by all the costumes and the swarms of people. There were over 5,000 runners in Prospect Park, all donned in their holiday best or, at least, red or green attire. I was thankful that we decided to color coordinate with red tops and black bottoms, adding to our festive mood.

 

Our line for bibs was only 5-10 minutes that seemed far shorter than most races. I think it moved quicker than normal since they rolled out their new bib system that features letters and numbers that are printed for you while you wait. Even though it seems counterintuitive to be faster, I swear it saved time since they weren’t flipping through all the bibs searching for my bib like a needle in a hay stack. The volunteer just scanned my QR code that NYRR sent the week before then within seconds there was a printed bib. We arrived at the right time, though, as the line was more than 200 people deep when we finished!  It seems like we weren’t the only Brooklyn residents who didn’t want to head uptown during the holiday season to pick up bibs.

We spent the next thirty minutes, before the race started, stretching and watching the children’s races, affectionately known as the Reindeer Run. I loved the smiles on the children as they ran, walked and skipped towards the finish line. One girl yelled, “I’m tired” but then started sprinting once we cheered loudly for her.

After using the restroom, we made our way towards the back of the corrals. Our goal was to hug the left side of the course, so we weren’t in the way of runners and then, once the course thinned out, walk alongside each other. My goal was to have mom jog for 15-30 seconds every five minutes. But, the ultimate goal was to have her finish her first NYRR race and enjoy it.

Exactly at 9:35, just five minutes after the race started, we crossed the starting line. As I’d expected, the first few minutes were complete madness as we did our best not to get run over. I kept mom smiling by pointing out the crazy costumes and promising her that it would get better. She was so motivated by the runners that her first jog interval was more like a sprint.

By the time we hit the first-mile marker, we knew that mom’s initial goal of keeping a 15-minute mile pace was a bit aggressive due to the crowds and hills, but both agreed that the best goal was just to enjoy ourselves. For the final three miles, we were able to walk together, mixing intervals of power walking and jogging, while enjoying the sights of Prospect Park. Due to the unseasonably warm weather, the park is still in Fall mode and on Saturday, in the morning light, it was illuminated in red, yellow and orange.

The volunteers were fabulous during the race, always giving mom motivation and reinforcing to her that she could do this. She never felt like she was the “back of the pack” or holding anyone up which was wonderful, based on my initial fears.

She jogged across the finish line, crossing in 1:04:07, smiling and happy to finish with the hills of Prospect Park. Considering that my mom does all her walking in “flat as a pancake” Savannah, Georgia I was pleased with the energy and attitude she used going into each hill. She followed my coaching of powering up the hill with her arms and remembering that what comes up must come down.

So, if you’re a walker who has been worried about entering your first race, I hope this post motivates you to sign up. Most races, unless they have a strict cut-off time, support runners and walkers of all paces as they are happy to have people motivated to be active. If you’re worried, email or call the race organizers in advance and ask the following questions:

  • Does the course have a time limit?
  • Is it open to walkers and runners?
  • Will there be support (water, volunteers, and medical staff) on the course the entire time?
  • Is it a race that is suggested for people of all abilities?

My Mistakes Along the Way..

Greetings from the age of 3-2. I am no longer 30 or 31. I am officially “in my thirties” and while that could scare some people, I couldn’t be happier.

Life is not always rosy and perfect. I try to do a good job of showing you life outside the Instagram filters, especially the past two years when Bo and I worked through a long distance marriage followed by unemployment. As I look back on what I’ve done with my first 31 years of life, I couldn’t be more proud.

Sure, I’ve made some horrible mistakes along the way:

  • I thought that if I hid the wrappers to candy under the couch, no one would know I ate it. That was true until our apartment flooded and my parents found hundreds of candy wrappers. God bless my mother who couldn’t figure out why her daughter was chunky.
  • I thought that gossip would make me cooler when in reality it ALWAYS ended up hurting someone and me.
  • I thought that I could find friends in chat rooms back when I was 15 and felt alone.
  • I racked up cell phone bills to my long distance boyfriend because really, who could wait until 9 pm to talk free. Speaking of which, does anyone remember when cell phone companies let you talk free from 9pm to 7am.
  • I developed a horrible fear of fat, even things like avocados and olive oil, which made dining out miserable for me and my companions.
  • I thought of exercise only as a method to lose weight versus an activity that could release stress and be fun or social.
  • I didn’t realize how important friends and family were to everyday life, sometimes letting far too long pass between texts, emails or phone calls.

I’m sure there are hundreds of other mistakes I’ve made throughout my first 31 years of life and thousands more that I’ll make as I navigate my professional and personal life in the years to come. But, each of these mistakes has helped shape me into the person I am today.

For my 32nd year, I can only make you readers one promise. I will continue to be real and when writing or posting, balance the filtered, edited or posed pictures or posts with snapshots into our life. While it is less than perfect and often easy to peel apart, layer by layer, these imperfections are what make it absolutely perfect for me.

Prospect Park Turkey Trot Race Recap

After taking three weeks off from formal race training, I did not have any expectations for Thursday’s Prospect Park Turkey Trot.

Since I wasn’t treating this race as a goal race, my race preparations included four intense workouts Monday through Wednesday, an impromptu date night with Bo on Wednesday night and only 6 hours of sleep. Needless to say, I knew I wasn’t going into the race with fresh legs or a perfectly fueled body.  In fact, when I checked my race history on Athlinks, I laughed at the idea of trying to PR when I saw that my PR was a 9:05 or 45:27, which I ran back in the 2006 NYRR Holiday 5 Mile race.

I quickly sipped some coffee and ate some oatmeal and a banana before leaving the house at 8:35. Since the race started on the opposite side of Prospect Park from us, I opted for a $6 Uber versus a 40-minute subway ride. I arrived at Prospect Park by 8:45, leaving me 15 minutes to use the bathroom and walk to the starting line with the other 2,500 runners.

The weather was absolutely perfect – sunshine, blue sky and 45 degrees. I wore my Lululemon Speed Tights, New Balance Seamless Hoodie, a sports bra, and my New Balance NYC Vazee Pace.

The race, which while timed is more of a fun run, did not have official corrals. Instead, a mass of us gathered on Center Drive, near the start, flanked by leave clad trails. I warmed up to Justin Bieber, going through dynamic stretches while waiting in the mass of runners, before switching to Spotify Run for the actual race. I’ve enjoyed using Spotify Run during my last few runs as it keeps things interesting, by surprising me with songs that match my tempo. IMG_6467

Right at 9 AM the crowd started to move forward, signaling the start of the race.  The first mile was jam packed, forcing me to swerve a bit in order to get around the slower walkers and runners. As soon as I passed them I headed for the left side which I hugged for the remainder of the race.  The entire race felt as if it was a perfect race day – I was able to power up the hills, pass people up until the finish line, and was smiling ear to ear. This was exactly the race I needed to end the Fall race season on a high note. There were volunteers along the course cheering and giving out water, there was good signage, and the official race results were sent out via email within hours of the race!

I didn’t wear a watch for the race but below you can see the splits from my Nike+. While it isn’t the most accurate in races, it at least allowed me to have a sense of my pace.  The slower pace during Mile 3 is due to a water stop, the steepest hill and a loose shoelace. I didn’t want to run out of energy and therefore made sure to push myself in the early miles but still leave some gas in the tank for the final miles.

PPTC Turkey Trot Results

I love seeing the lower paces in mile 4 and 5, proof that I could have run an even faster race AND that I should have another PR in me for this weekend’s NYRR Jingle Jog which is a 4 mile race in Prospect Park.

I was greeted by an adorable medal and water as soon as I crossed the finish line. A sweet spectator snapped a picture before I quickly headed back towards Carroll Gardens for a day of cooking.  I fully believe that this new PR was made possibly by a strong training base combined with a month of agressive cross training. There is no doubt that Bar Method, Fhitting Room and the 28 other ClassPass classes Bo and I have taken together have made me a stronger, leaner runner!

Now, let’s see if I can crush my four mile PR (35:51 or 8:57 pace) during this Saturday’s NYRR Jingle Jog!
