So, What Did We Do During Our Staycation?

staycation pic
If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, then you know that we are very thankful for the six day staycation we are just finishing.

staycationWe decided to sell the spots we’d initially purchased for Yacht Week in the US Virgin Islands, in exchange for six quiet days at home in Brooklyn. At first, this decision shocked both of us, as we’d looked forward to sunshine, clear water and fun with friends. But, as we approached the holiday season, we both knew we needed time to relax, reconnect and rest versus a week of travel. Many of our friends and family have asked us before, during and now, following my posts on social media, what exactly we did during our staycation that made it so beneficial.  As I look back over the past few days, I think the reason we both benefited so much from the time was because we did exactly what we wanted to do, together. The only rule we made during the time is that we did things together versus getting together separately with friends or doing things that only interested one of us.

  • We slept at least nine hours each night.  We set an alarm each day, just to ensure we didn’t sleep past any of our plans, but we actually woke up naturally each morning.
  • We enjoyed a relaxing breakfast routine of coffee, fresh grapefruit, toast or yogurt and the New York Times. We rarely have the pleasure of reading the paper together while sipping coffee so doing this six days in a row was a nice change of pace.
  • We watched all eight episodes of Making a Murderer on Netflix. No, we didn’t watch it in one day, instead we spread it across four days. If you liked Serial, then you’ll love this documentary/series.
  • We saw two movies together: Joy and The Big Short. While you can probably imagine who chose each one, we both left the theater after each, having thoroughly enjoyed the movie and agreeing that we’d recommend it to others.
  • We hosted a New Year’s Eve dinner party. Hosting five of our friends for New Year’s Eve provided us the perfect opportunity to see friends during the holiday. We’ve realized, more and more, that we enjoy hosting smaller parties, of 20 people or less, more than the larger parties we used to host. Everything just feels more manageable while also providing us with a small enough setting to truly talk and enjoy everyone’s company.
  • We worked out each day. During the course of the six days we went for two runs, two spin classes, one gym session, and one hot power yoga class. It was the perfect way to kick start our bodies and get back on track after an indulgent few weeks.
  • We spent a lot of time in the kitchen together. Since Bo is the stronger cook, it’s historically been easy to let him be the more dominant cook in the kitchen. But, over the past few days, we’ve had a great time balancing the kitchen tasks and partnering on meal planning and cooking. Including New Year’s Eve, we cooked four dinners together.
  • We tried a new neighborhood restaurant. We’d heard great things about French Louie, so on the 29th we enjoyed a leisurely date night together. We took our time, first having a cocktail at their bar before being seated for our meal. We ordered four small plates and shared the dishes instead of going the traditional entree route. If you’re in Brooklyn, French Louie is a perfect spot for brunch or dinner and in the summer months they have an outdoor garden.
  • We drove down to New Jersey for lunch with extended family. It’d been far too long since we had seen my aunt, uncle and cousin who live down in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. We took advantage of the time off to hop in a rental car and make the 1.5 hour drive down for a holiday lunch. We scheduled this for the beginning of our staycation time since it meant leaving town. We also wanted to ensure that if there was traffic or bad weather, it wouldn’t ruin the mood of our staycation. Luckily we had no traffic and had such a great time with them that we’re already planning our next trip.
  • We crossed a few things off our to-do list. While these few days could have easily been all about conquering our to-do list, that would have left us overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead we chose a few, small projects that we wanted to accomplish and focused on only those projects. Once those were done, we allowed ourselves to relax.
  • We indulged in a couples massage. Bo has never loved massages but after feeling his tense shoulders the other night, I convinced him that a couples massage, enjoyed in the comfort of our home, would be a great way to end the staycation. If you’ve never tried Zeel, we highly recommend the in-home massage service after today’s wonderful experience. The two masseuse both arrived 15 minutes ahead of the appointment time so they could create an in-home spa like environment. If you want to give it a try, you can use this code (7uet)  for $25 off your 1st #Zeel Massage.

Hopefully, each of you will take at least 48-hours in the near future to invest in yourselves. Do the things that make you happy, try to disconnect a bit, turn off the alarm, and relax!

The Holes and Gaps in my 2015 Best Nine

Top Nine

Like many others, I could review 2015 by sharing my thoughts in regards to each of my top nine Instagram posts from the year. Thanks to this website, lots of people have shared the images which received the most engagement during the previous twelve months.

But, as I look at these pictures, I see holes and gaps versus my thoughts on 2015.

  • All of these pictures were posted in the United States, which therefore overlooks the six months that we lived in Switzerland.
  • These pictures only include two of the cities we visited (NYC and Savannah), overlooking twenty-one cities and eight countries we visited including Russia, Italy, France, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland and England.
  • These pictures only include three people other than me – my mom, Bo and Kristine. While those people were very important in 2015, there are countless friends across three countries (Switzerland, England, and US) who made 2015 the year it was. They supported us through tough times, celebrated the highs, introduced us to traditions and their countries, and helped us make incredible memories.
  • These pictures don’t show the puddles of tears that were shed this year. Bo and I have spent the past two days, during our staycation, doing a lot of talking. This year was a rough one mentally and emotionally. We coped with the difficulties of unemployment. We made hard decisions, without the support of a magic eight ball, showing us the way of our future. We spent time apart as he searched for a job and then started that job in New York City. We said goodbye to life in Europe a year before we intended, in order to build a life together in New York City. We took a risk and moved our apartment search to Brooklyn, versus the Manhattan we knew. We spent countless hours searching for an apartment that could feel more like a home, having to see many disappointing apartments before finding the one. We started new roles which each came with their own complexities, requiring our focus and time. I started managing people for the first time, in a role with Procter&Gamble which has quickly become my most fulfilling and gratifying role even after just six short months. We navigated finding our way back into the group of friends we left behind while living abroad while meeting new friends and trying our best to stay in touch with those abroad. We have been blessed to spend more time with both our families in the past six months than we did in the past three years. We have welcomed new members into our extended family, which in the process, has taught us a great deal. We have both said things and done things this year that we wish we could sugar coat or take back but at the end of the day, we are finishing the year stronger than we started and we’ve learned a lot about communication.
  • These pictures, while bright and vibrant, don’t show the way that I have evolved as a wife, friend, sister, daughter, blogger, employee and person. The events of this year have helped me better understand and appreciate those things that are personally a priority in my life. When that video was released about the Instagram husband, I had to laugh because that was definitely a role I tried to have Bo play in years past. But this year, as we tried to focus on strengthening and improving our relationship and those with others, we realized that social media can also cause a lot of issues. Therefore, I’ve worked to enjoy the moments with my own senses versus blocking them with a lens.
  • While I still love running and have many wonderful memories from races and the miles I logged this year, these pictures overlook the role that larger role fitness classes have played in my life since moving back to New York. Bo and I use this time together, each day from 6-7 AM, to start the day together in a healthy way. It is the time that we know we’ll have together each day, before the chaos and demands of work take over. Due to nagging injuries on his side, and the importance of cross training, we’ve spent more time in classes than on the road together. While we both hope that 2016 will find us running together again, we’ve both appreciated what we’ve gained from cross training and challenging our bodies in new ways.
  • These pictures overlook many of the incredible opportunities and memories I was provided due to this blog.  This year I shared my adventures in trying to live a healthy, happier life with you all through 187 posts. Originally started on New Years Day 2010, as I looked at pictures from the night before in disgust, I had no idea that the blog would play such a large role in my life for this many years. this blog has evolved in a multitude of ways.  But, similar to the way it helped me when I moved abroad, it also helped me when we moved home. Through the fitness community I have made new friends, had incredible experiences, and have continued to grow and deepen my path towards a balanced, healthy life.

As we look towards tomorrow, the fresh start of 2016, I am excited for what the year will bring. There will certainly be more travel, as we have already booked two trips for the year, to Tahoe and India. There will be many celebrations and festivities as we stand by Meg and Russell’s side for their 2016 wedding. Our parents will continue to play the role of friends and mentors, as we are able to share our home and city with them multiple times, including the two visits we gave to each of them for Christmas gifts. There will be gallons of sweat and hours spent working out together as this will continue to be the sacred time we enjoy together and my favorite form of socializing with friends. The blog will continue to take an even larger part in my life, as I’ve outlined goals for the year which I will share with you all next week.

Thank you for sharing in the journey and supporting us.

Love,

Ashley & Bo

Savannah Christmas 2015

Greetings from Brooklyn!

christmas glow

Bo and I arrived back in Brooklyn yesterday afternoon after a wonderful holiday week in Savannah with family. We relaxed on the couch with The Martian, the warm glow of our Christmas tree lights, a nice bottle of red wine, and our favorite white chicken chili.

Instead of giving you a play by play recap of our time in Savannah, I’ll give you an overview with pictures. This trip was like many of our other holiday trips to Savannah: we split our time between Bo’s parents house and my parent’s house while also enjoying some of our favorite Savannah activities. The only difference this year was that our family gatherings grew! My aunt and uncle drove down from Chapel Hill for the week and Russel’s family, The Millers, drove down from Milwaukee to join in the holiday festivities and see Savannah for the first time. Bo’s sister Meg is marrying Russell in May so the holiday week provided the perfect opportunity to do some wedding planning as well as celebrate Christmas together as an extended family. While it isn’t always easy blending 15 different people together, while trying to respect each family’s holiday traditions, it ended up being a wonderful holiday.
