This week, I am on the hunt for brown boots. I know exactly what I want, which is making the hunt harder not easier. I want boots that are taller than mid calf, medium to light brown, leather, feature a wide enough calf so they can go over jeans while not being too slouchy.
Right now we’re having a bit of an Indian Summer in Geneva so I can’t quite transition fully into tall boots, sweaters and scarves. I can’t believe that this week it will reach 75 degrees even though just a few weeks ago it was in the 40s.
The biggest difference I notice in both London and Geneva versus New York City is how much it cools off at night. Most evenings it is in the low 50s and the breeze can make it feel as if it’s closer to 40. Last Saturday night when we ate outside in Marylebone we were all in layers including sweaters and jackets, wishing we’d added a scarf to the mix!
I’m currently evaluating my current closet and figuring out what needs to be added or replaced. The number one thing that I’ve noticed is that my brown boots are beyond exhausted. They have been resoled three times already over their 4 year lifespan and are no longer comfortable. It’s time to say goodbye to my beloved Madden boots and replace them with a fresh pair of tall boots. Oh I am obsessed with boots. i have two grey pairs, a brown pair and a black pair that get A LOT of wear this time of year. My favourite of the ones above are the Steve Madden boots. I LOVE my SM boots!

I’m on the hunt as well and tried these on last weekend in the dark brown color (Coco Western Brush) but they come in a lighter bron as well, I really liked them, though I’d throw them in the mix for you!

For years, I’ve purchased a pair of the Steve Madden Intyce boots (in the cognac color above) in the fall, worn them to death, and repeated the cycle every year. They were decent boots for the price – but couldn’t hod up to being worn 3-4x per week. This year, during Nordstrom’s Anniversary sale, I bit the bullet and purchased Frye boots (‘Lucinda’ – which are higher and have a chunkier heel than the ‘Melissa’ style you posted above). Although we’re having a warm fall (thus far!) in NJ, I’ve worn them a few times and love them! Let’s hope they last for a long time!
I bought a pair of Corso Como cognac riding boots about 3 years ago and have worn them to death and walked countless miles in them (through several continents) and they have held up amazingly well without even having to be re-soled. I love them so much that I bought an identical pair in black last year. They’re really the best and so incredibly comfortable.
I went back and forth over purchasing the Frye Melissa Button boots for months about two years back and am so happy I finally pulled the trigger. They’ve held up amazingly well with a lot of city walking miles on them. They aren’t too tight and I also have runner’s calves. Bonus is that they really do go with everything. One of the best, quality purchases I ever made. I also bought the Steve Madden Intyce boots in black during the same shoe shopping spree and ended up returning them. Something about the material just looked a little cheap to me. Happy shopping!

Check out Frye’s Jackie Tall Riding Boot. They have a partial side zipper so they’re easier to bet on and off than most Frye boots. Even with a low heel they are super comfortable… even if you walk around in them all day. And Even though Frye’s are pricier, they last forever and hold up really well. They are definitely worth the price!
I have the Frye boots in brown and black and I LOVE them. The leather is buttery soft and smells amazing. They hold up incredibly well- I’m on my 3rd season with no repairs needed. One thing I’ve noticed about the Tory boots is that unless you have long calves they hit a couple inches mid-knee (uncomfortable!) I’ve been lusting for a draped black leather jacket and finally took the plunge today with the Bloomies Friends and Family sale.

I have the Frye Melissa boots and I love them! Highly recommend. They are so comfortable once you break them in and they look great with every outfit.
I have a bunch of pairs from JCrew and I love them. Those Frye boots are really nice, too!
I love Fryes. The quality and comfort is great. I have the Harness style so not quite a riding boot. I do like the first Sam edelmans you linked and the Corsica como.

I am heading to New York in 2 weeks and would love to know what your go-to shops are for clothes, jackets and boots. Do you shop in the States more as you know the shops already, or are the choices and prices better in the NY compared with Geneva or London?
Hi Jodi! I shop in the US because it’s a lot cheaper! In New York it depends what you want. I love Bloomingdales on 59th street as they have a great selection. There are a lot of flagship stores too (Tory Burch, Barbour, etc) so that can work well too! Definitely check out SoHo for some great smaller boutiques!
I don’t own any of these but tall brown boots are my one must need item right now as well. My little 5’0 body doesn’t make finding them easy!
I have the Sam Edelman “Penny” boots and I LOVE them. I bought them last fall and wore them almost everyday throughout the fall and winter (besides super snowy days–didn’t want to ruin them!) They are still very comfortable and in great shape. I live in New England, if that gives you an indication of the kind of terrain and weather I wore them in. The only thing that I will say is the darker brown detail on the toe of the boot did fade and is no longer there. Other than that, they were definitely a worthwhile purchase. I’ve even been asked if they were Frye boots a few times 😉
