What’s Next?

Two weeks ago, I crushed my half marathon goal and set a new personal record (PR) during the NYC Half Marathon. It was a wonderful day that reminded me just how much I love running!

Even though you’d think this runner’s high would make me want to sign up for every single race in the metro area to continue pushing myself, I’ve actually experienced the opposite. I decided it was time to take a break from training and spend two weeks doing whatever workout I found myself in the mood to experience that day. Therefore, my evenings or mornings have been filled with yoga, Barry’s Bootcamp, and Uplift Fitness classes. I’ve loved gaining a new appreciation for yoga through the month unlimited pass I bought at Laughing Lotus. Both Barry’s Bootcamp and Uplift have allowed me to combine great music, super sweaty workouts, and friends while pushing my body. In order to break through a bit of the plateau I was feeling I’ve started increasing the weight I use in both of these classes having now moved up to primarily using 15 pound weights for all arm workouts, even tricep work!

However, now that my legs have had a break from running for two weeks, they are anxious to get back into training. Yesterday during the run portion of Barry’s Bootcamp I found myself pushing the speed in ways that I haven’t done previously just for the sole purpose of feeling my stride again. After reviewing my race calendar along with the New York Road Runners and NYC Runs calendar, I’m excited to focus on speed for the next few weeks. On May 4th I’m running The Run for Hope, a local 5k race down in Battery Park City hosted by high school children. I love the idea of supporting a local school since I remember working for hours to fundraise during high school and am hoping that the route will include scenic views of the Statue of Liberty and the Hudson River!  Therefore the month of April will be all about speed! I look forward to working with Gia to incorporate more speedwork into my weekly running schedule while we still balance the strength work that I’ve been loving through group workout classes and weekly long runs to ensure that I’m still in half marathon shape come May 18th when we head out to Brooklyn with a number of our other running friends for the New York Road Runners Brooklyn Half. It’s been two years since I ran this race and while I’m not looking to set another half marathon PR, I would like to improve my course time which is a 2:20:44.

Luckily, to help with this new speed training, I have a new lightweight pair of shoes to incorporate into my shorter workouts. The New Balance Minimus 10V2 feature a Vibram out sole,  which makes them last longer along with odor resistant interior, and hot pink laces!  I love how bright and fun the shoes are while still being supportive and good entry point to minimal running without being as extreme as some other options on the market. With a 4mm drop the shoe will help improve my running form and feel running in a whole different manner.

I’ve tried the shoes out three times in 2 different environments: on the treadmill during Barry’s Bootcamp sprints and at Uplift. My feet felt no pain during either workouts even though one of the Barry’s Bootcamp classes included 3.5 miles of treadmill running. While on the incline I felt like I had a stronger grip and was more stable while on the sprints my feet felt lighter due to the fact that these shoes only weigh in at 5.2 ounces! I can’t wait to use these during my shorter speed workouts in April to see how they can help my form and feel of running a new pace! Hopefully come May 4th I’ll be sporting these bright shoes at the finish line with a new 5k PR!

A Perfect Morning and Good Friday Discussion

Happy Friday!

I slept like a rock last night. Maybe it was because I opted out of Thursday night yoga at Laughing Lotus with Theodora for wine, bath salts, and a long conversation with my mom via phone instead. In case there was any question, I am 100% human and don’t always feel like working out. When my body screams at me to do other things, like chill out, I have found that it’s often best to listen.

Are you all off today in honor of Good Friday? Our office isn’t closed today due to other holidays we have off but I decided to take a half day since Bo has the day off.

I woke up bright and early to meet Theodora at Uplift Studios  for Michelle’s Uplift Strength class. Even though 6:30 is early for a Friday, I swear it is such a fun way to kick off the day!

After the class I dashed home so I could shower before meeting Bo at 71 Irving Place, our favorite neighborhood coffee shop. We spent the next few hours working side by side each other while sipping on delicious, frothy coffees and their yogurt and granola breakfast dish.

Even though I was able to get through a lot of work, including going through and sorting half of the thousand emails in my work inbox, it was so relaxing to work in this atmosphere for a change. After a few hours at Irving, a co-worker and I ended up meeting to work on some projects together and talk through a few things. Not too bad considering it’s only 2pm!

Bo and I are heading uptown to walk through Central Park, check out a few exhibits at The Metropolitan Art Museum, grab a cocktail, and then head downtown for dinner at The Marrow. We’ve wanted to try The Marrow since we read about it on Grubstreet and here about it from many of our other friends.

Discuss: Do you think having a corporate holiday for a religious holiday, such as Good Friday, is an out of date practice?

Things That Made Me Smile Today

Sometimes, after a long day there is nothing I crave more than a home cooked meal, a long conversation on the couch with Bo, and curling up in a blanket with my curent book. But, at the same time I love my blog and feel like it’s due a bit more attention than it’s getting right now.

So, the good news is that I have a lot of ideas I want to blog about over the next few weeks and have already marked some time on Saturday and Sunday’s schedule to work on blog topics. We’ll be on a train for 3 hours Sunday for an Easter visit with family in New Jersey so this seems like the perfect time to catch up!

So, in fairness to the couch that is screaming my name, this post is going to be quick.

Here are a few pictures from my day that made me smile in more ways than one!

Combine a 5am Barry’s Bootcamp class with these amazing new shoes and there is no way the bright colors and endorphins won’t leave you smiling! These shoes were awesome for both the squats and jumping lunges on the floor and the sprints at 12 incline! More details about the kicks on Friday but seriously, if your current shoes are boring opt for a bright color next time. I promise, it brings smiles!

Even though Spring is taking forever to grace New York City with it’s presence, this morning’s sun rise over the East River gave me hope that it’s quickly approaching! I have loved every second of winter running but I’m ready for a long Spring filled with long walks home instead of the subway, the first flip flop day, and bright colored dresses and skirts.

2013-03-27 07.04.03

During our walk to the subway this morning, Bo suggested that I try his favorite breakfast at a local restaurant, Dishes. I scoffed when he suggested adding their vegetable, chive egg whites to the stone ground oats. But, after a few minutes of convincing I scooped it together and promised him he’d owe me if they didn’t live up to my expectations. OH MY! These were absolutely divine! I haven’t had savory oats many times before and my previous attempts were clearly feeble in comparison to this bowl of goodness. This may become a Barry’s Bootcamp treat on Monday and Wednesday as my hunger is on fire after the class and all I crave is protein and more protein.

I celebrated my shiny new half marathon PR by ordering a 13.1 race bling from Erica Sara Designs to add to the 26.2 necklace Theodora gave me for Christmas. Receiving this sweet hand written note in the mail from Erica and team left me with the largest smile and a warm heart for supporting my friend’s company. I am so proud of all she has done in such a short time and know that there is more magic in the works. For now, all I can say is that this small gesture has convinced me to order a few more items for friends and family!
