Running a second marathon has been harder than I expected due to this year’s travel schedule. But, due to your motivation and support each day, I was able to successfully train in multiple different cities across the US, knowing that you all were waiting to read that day’s run recap or race review. On the worst of days it were your comments, tweets, and Facebook messages that made me smile and pull on my running shoes even when I was tired and didn’t feel like it.
Therefore, as a thank you, I am hosting a Marathon Must Have giveaway to thank you all! These are a few of my favorite things that I’ve relied on for my long runs, races, and training in between! As you can tell from the picture below, I’ll be wearing some of these items for the big day in two weeks!
The winner will receive the following, in the color and size of their request, based on availability.
- 1 pair of Zensah calf sleeves
- 1 package of Goody StayPut headbands
- 1 bag of Lavender Epsom Salts
There are four ways to enter, each one will give you a better chance to win! Please leave me a comment letting me know you did.

Asphalt Green’s cycle class with MaryBeth Moore
Great giveaway! My favorite workout class in NYC is spinning at Crunch. There are two teachers I love: Melinda and Matt. They both motivate me SO much with their awesome music and inspiring screams during class.
Though Hot Power Yoga at PURE is a VERY close second. I took it twice, fell in love, then had my heart broken when I saw the membership prices. Hehe.
not entering the contest but what an awesome one! If you see a blonde girl named Liz hanging around the Union Square soul cycle tell her Heidi said hi 🙂 I miss her. She’s amazing and a soul cycle junkie 🙂 (she works there i think, we used to work together in greenwich)
I love ki power vinyasa at Earth Yoga on the upper east side. Fabulous workout – invigorating and relaxing! Great contest!
I’m pretty new to this whole fitness thing, but I’m always pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy Total Body Conditioning at NYSC in Rego Park. It is the perfect mix of strength and cardio!
I’d love to try soul cycle! I’d say my favorite workout class in the city is core fusion at exhale. I love barre classes and it is one of the best.
great giveaway! my favorite class in NYC is cardio sculpt at NYHRC — it combines cardio and weights (which i struggle to do on my own!) for an awesome workout. the instructor is great and always switches it up, so it never gets boring!
Love this post! I HAVE to try that pasta.
I gave the new SoulCycle a “spin” on Sunday late a.m. and really dig it! The class felt SO good. I have to say that spinning is probably my favorite class at any gym, and I love Core Fusion too! In the future, I’d love to try a Tara Stiles yoga class. Can’t beat the price! 😉
Right now Physique 57 and 306090 🙂 My legs are so sore!!!
xoxo
s
Great giveaway girl! The best nyc class I’ve taken was the yoga class at joschi yoga in nyc! The teacher turned me 360 degrees midair!
I would love to try out Soul Cycle!
My favorite NYC class is Matt Pest at Crunch 59th street. He is beyond motivating and always makes me want to work extra hard. Also, it doesn;t hurt that he is very nice too look at:)
Great giveaway! I haven’t tried too many classes in NYC yet, but I do love Pure’s Hot Power class. However, my budget is more of a Yoga-to-the-People one, and I really enjoy their hot power classes at the 38th St. location. I’ve also been getting into Total Body Conditioning at NYSC lately – kind of like Body Pump (I guess?) – because it motivates me to lift weights, which I normally hate doing on my own.
Great giveaway! I’ve been wanting to check out soulcycle and union square is so convenient! I used to love pilates classes with weights at reab pilates and now my gym, 24 hour fitness, has added one too!
awesome giveaway! would love to win considering since i definitely can’t afford their prices haha i took an awesome yoga class at prana power yoga on broadway and 17th once and was the sweatiest i’ve ever been after a class but i also have to give a shout out to FCITC’s winter bootcamp class that definitely kicked my ass!
This is so exciting as I have been wanting to try Soul Cycle for FOREVER! My favorite class is at a small pilates studio on the Upper West Side called Pilates Shop/Yoga Garage. It is a tiny little space but the workout is amazing! The guy who runs the place was a dancer and when he teaches I just feel so much more graceful. Such a great giveaway!
I have never been much of a class person, but am starting to get into it. I really enjoy the spin and strength training classes at Club H fitness and Sports Club LA. I love spinning and haven’t tried Soul Cycle yet but am dyinggg to! Great giveaway- hope I win and can try it soon 🙂
I love BPW: body, pilates and weights at The Sports Club/LA on the UES. It’s as close to body pump as I’ve found in NYC and the teacher is great. A total body workout in one hour!
Love love love this giveaway!! My favorite workout in new York is spinning at equinox. I used to go to kristen kenney’s class and miss it terribly 🙁
I tried Kangoo this weekend and it was amazing. Bouncing around for an hour made me feel like a kid again.
As basic as it is, I absolutely love Total Body Conditioning at NYSC. I always leave the class with my muscles shaking and knowing that I just put in a solid hour of pumping iron without my usual vice of distracting myself.
oh man what a fun giveaway! I’ve actually never been to a NYC fitness class yet.. saving up some $ so I can afford a membership by Summer hopefully! 🙂
Super fun giveaway!
My favorite classes are definitely Corefusion classes at Exhale – so different than anything I do on my own, so I feel like I’m getting a great workout! Although the Yogaworks class we took together is pretty high up there as one of the coolest classes I’ve taken 🙂
Have you tried Stacy’s Soul Bands class at Soul Cycle. Truly AMAZING!
Woah–what a SUPERB giveaway idea. Im a boring white girl with ZERO rhythm but I have to tell you that the hip hop class at NYSC is one of the most fun things ive ever done. It was fun, sexy and sweaty! I may not have 100% kept up with the choreogtaphy but i did manage to break it down during the freestyle part at the end.
My fave NYC class is Darryl Gaines’ TranscendCycle. He is incredibly uplifting, on the beat with the best music, making you work and sweat but having a great ride too. His spin classes are out of this world, intense cardio mega sessions. And when he walks by your bike he recognizes how hard you are working with a nod and a dance, too fun! Am excited to try SoulCycle sometime soon in their new location, near where I live!
love physique 57. completely kicks my ass every time no matter how in shape i think i am. i live right near the new soul cycle and would love to check it out!
I like Exhale. My abs are cut when I do classes there consistently and I feel like it shapes my rear very fast. Great workout.
Great giveaway – I’ve been wanting to give Soul Cycle a try!
I think my favorite workout class in NYC is a tie between 30/60/90 and Core Fusion. Very different classes – but both kick your butt!
Awesaome giveaway! I have been wanting to try soul cycle for so long! My favorite workout is running! I can’t wait till the weather gets nice and I can run outside again!
right now i am loving bikram yoga.
I’ve tried very few exercise classes in NYC, which is why I’d love to try SoulCycle!! I need to fill the BodyPump void in my life.
I love spin classes at NYSC in rock center! Favorite weeknight meal is butternut squash ravioli with brussel sprouts, staple in my house. Your dinner looked delicous 🙂
Core Fusion at Exhale is my favorite workout of all time! There is NOTHING like it. It is super challenging but also rewarding because you can actually feel your muscles getting stronger and tighter. Also- it isn’t too shabby to work out at a nice spa! The instructors are GREAT, the music is terrific, and the overall program is just the best. Highly recommend!
A close second place would go to the urban rebounding class at NYSC. It is so fun to jump up and down on a trampoline for 45 minutes and actually get a full workout while doing so! Burning calories in a way that is disguised as fun?? The best! 🙂
Running in central park or exhale’s core fusion cardio. Would absolutely love to try soulcycle!
I love The Bar Method in Soho but I would love to add a little spinning into my routine. Ive been wanting to try SoulCycle for a while now!
I love the 530 spin class at NYSC City Hall. The instructor always has awesome music!
wohooooo made it before you picked!! I have been wanting to try Soul Cycle for so long so I am so excited for your giveaway!!
My favorite workout class is Spin at NYSC!
Bikram with Melissa! Its an intense class, but Melissa is motivating, and learns everyone’s names, so she can encourage us as a group and individually! I always feel great when I leave!
My favorite workout class is intenSati of course! I love that it is not just an amazing cardio workout but also a practice about living a life you love and thinking in a positive way. It is so much fun and the community is amazing.
Janet’s 60 minute Soul Survivor class @ Soul Cycle Tribeca. Cardio, core strengthening, weights and meditation all in one exhiliarating class. So good that you leave it feeling like your body is a temple that you don’t want to defile by eating crappy food afterwards!
hmm, i’m not a big class person, but i do think my favorite of the ones i’ve taken is the bootcamp for marathoners class through pace4success – totally kicks your butt in 45 minutes, and i’m noticing a huge difference already!
I’ve loved the Boot Camp for Marathoners class, too! I also really like SoulCycle and 30/60/90.
SoulCycle! Its the only workout I have ever done where the time flies by and at the end of the class I think, I could totally do more. Its like therapy mixed in with cardio and you can loose yourself in the music. You can actually just turn your thoughts off and get the same high you would get from going out dancing at night with your friends, minus the drink calories! 🙂
Wonder if Caitlyn has seen number 3 on the Soul Etiquette list 😀
CoreFusion or ANYTHING abs! It hurts but I love waking up the next morning and really feeling it!
mine is soul cycle UWS — love it! can’t wait to try this studio!
I usually a chicken when it comes to new classes. I’ll occassionaly try out so spin, yoga or pilates at the gym, but more often than not I’m bored. I could really use a nice challenge.
Matthew Pasqua’s spin classes at Equinox Tribeca and Wall Street locations!
Thanks for the awesome giveaway. 🙂 My favorite classes in NYC are Refine Method and New York Yoga Hot Yoga on the Upper East Side (With Emily)
My favorite workout is Soul Cycle with Laurie.. when I can get in. The music in Nick’s classes is amazing, too. Great blog, glad soul retweeted you!
Ahhh, I’d love to win this as I haven’t been able to try that many classes yet!! So far new york health and racquet club spinning with a guest pass!!

Do you think you’ll ever train for a race longer than a marathon? (Ultra?)

I liked you on Facbook and now following you Twitter! @chickadeestatio
Love this giveaway! I have been running all summer and just did my 1st 10k. Thinking about doing a 1/2 in the spring. Any advice for training in the winter? I live in CT and once it starts snowing…I’m usually done running! I do have a treadmill, but I can only take so much of that!
Hi! I just liked your FB page!
I follow you on Twitter!
Here’s my question. I have decided to run my first marathon in the spring of 2012! Im super excited and super nervous!! What would you say would be the BEST gear (clothes) for cold weather running? I dont mind running in the cold as long as I am dressed properly!
I’ve done all the things you said (though been Twitter following for a long time already!) As for a question, how do you deal with getting burnt out on running? Say, you’ve been training for awhile and are just tired of those long runs but know you really still want to do the marathon?

First of all – you are such an inspiration! Your advice on marathon training has been great 🙂 My question – how do you work through the ‘wall’ while training or racing?
Cool giveaway! I would like to know how you and Bo met. You seem like such a perfect couple.
I have a question for you. Do you see yourself living in New York long term or do you think you’ll move at some point? Also, what was the hardest adjustment when getting used to life in New York?
Wow, awesome give away! My question would be: How did you make the decision to move up North to New York City? I also LOVE when you post about your outfits and clothing finds!
I love this giveaway!!! My question for you would be how was your transition from living/ growing up in the south then moving to the north? I go to school in Philadelphia, but I’m from a beach town in Florida. People in the northeast aren’t exactly known for their southern hospitality.
I follow you on Twitter, tweeted the giveaway, and like you on Facebook! 🙂
My question is: how do you deal with exercise burn-out? I just finished training (and running) my 3rd marathon and with a month left to go I didn’t want to run anymore, go to the gym, or do anything really! Training is a commitment – how you deal when it’s coming to the end and you’re just tired!?
Love this giveaway! I am also running my 2nd marathon the weekend after NYC. We’re running the Outer Banks Marathon and I am excited!
Question: What southern staples do you miss while living in NYC? (I know I’d miss quite a few, being an NC girl :)).
I already follow up on Facebook and Twitter!

And last, I am starting to train for my first marathon Rock and Roll D.C. and I was wondering if you have any advice for the first time long run. How did you get motivated to do it? What do you recommend for recovery?
Thanks!
I know first hand how difficult it is to travel for work and try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you are doing a great job!
Question: No matter what distance I run: 5k, 5 miles, 1/2 marathon or a full marathon…the first 2 miles always seem to be a struggle. Do you have any advice for starting a race feeling strong?
Great giveaway! I work for an adventure race company that puts on mud run/obstacle course races (like Warrior Dash). Would you ever consider doing one? I’d love to offer you a free entry! We’re coming to Brooklyn on November 19.

A future question:
I know you are extremely busy but somehow you seem to do it all. What time do you go to bed at night and get up in the am? What do you do in your downtime? TV? Read? How much downtime do you have?
I love your blog and this giveaway is awesome! I enjoy reading about the different places you travel for work and how you fit in workouts while you are on the road.
I tweeted about the giveaway via @eatslovehappy
I also like you on Facebook and follow you on Twitter.
And a question that I would like to be answered would be how does your training transition once the cold months hit? NYC is not only cold in the winter, but pretty messy…do you run inside? Or layer up and get outside?
All of this great gear would be some good inspiration to get my butt back out there!
I liked you on Facebook and I followed you on Twitter!
Also, I was wondering if you are interested in ever doing a triathlon? Or, if there were other marathons you are considering signing up for?

Question: How does your diet change when you shift from training for your marathon to recovery? I ran a half marathon a week ago and I know I don’t need to be eating as much as I was when I was in the middle of training. However, I’m not sure how to go about adjusting my diet.
Awesome give away! Love your blog!

oooh – this giveaway sounds amazing! How do you manage to find time for you and Bo with all the travelling, running, and life events?
I’ve “liked” your facebook page and am following you on twitter!

What are your athletic plans for the future: more marathons, a tri, yoga?!
I liked Healthy Happier on FB. I think I would like to try a Body Pump class. I really need to incorporate strength training into my half marathon training!
What a great giveaway!
Question — How did you first decide to take the leap from shorter runs to the marathon distance?

I am a graduate student who also works almost full-time and I struggle every. single. day. to find the motivation to just get out there and run. I’ve run a few half marathons so any advice you can give on how to get to 26.2 mentally would be amazing! 🙂

This isn’t directly related to running/fitness but I’d love to hear more about how you & Bo balance your marriage in the fact of 2 crazy NYC full time jobs, traveling, training, etc. You seem to do a great job of balancing everything and I would love to hear how you balance your relationship amidst everything as well.

OMG I love the running skirt! Too cute! Anyhow, here is my comment/question: I always thought the whole barefoot running craze was a little kooky…but after reading Born to Run I felt like I should give Vibram’s a shot. I now LOVE them and do the majority of my runs in them! What are your thoughts on Vibrams and other minimalist running shoes? Have you ever thought about giving them a try?
My favorite class in NYC is Terrior Cycling at Equinox. So hard, but I feel so good after.

Hi, I tweeted about this give away as well. In terms of a question, what’s the best way to lose weight after hitting a plateau?
Okay, my question for you is, are there any foods you eat while running distances to help you fuel? For instance, instead of “Gu” do you ever eat fruit? Looking for options… Thanks!

How do you handle boredom on your long runs?
I liked you on Facebook 🙂

I already posted, but it was very early this morning and I later realized I had a genuine question for you: You seem to be quite a charming balance between an old fashioned, Southern girl and a modern career oriented woman. What are some of the ways you balance that?
Thanks! Sorry if that’s a weird question, it’s just always something I’ve noticed reading your posts:)

Question I’d like answered (though as a new reader, I can’t be sure you haven’t answered this already) — What do you do to keep the negative thoughts at bay while you are having a not-so-good run? I struggle with this even on good runs, so I am always looking for advice or strategies!
what is your favorite non running workout?
I tweeted about this FABULOUS giveaway
I like you on facebook!
i follow you on twitter!
i re-tweeted 🙂
my question is, how do you get Bo to run with you? or how often does he run with you? My boyfriend wont run with me or workout with me much anymore.
Now following you on Twitter!
My question would be would techniques ( or tools) do you use to stay organized with your busy schedule? I love hearing how people balance work/life/training! 🙂
How do you fit everything in, like friends and family, when you are working long hours and training for a marathon? I also work long hours in the corporate world, and I always feel like I’m scrambling to fit everything and everyone in!
This is an amazing giveaway! What are your tips on landing a great job and being successful in the workplace?

Great giveaway!
I’d love to know how you mentally get through a tough run. Sometimes I’ll have a long run on my agenda and it just starts bad and I have a hard time not stopping.
What an awesome giveaway! In a future post, can you share your favorite running route in NYC? As a fellow NYC runner, I’m always up for fun new routes. Thanks for hosting such a generous giveaway, Ashley 🙂
Wow, that’s an awesome giveaway package. My question is kind of random: It seems that you (often) wear fabulous and quite high heels to work. How much walking do you do to get to work? Do you wear the heels on your commute, or change shoes when you get there? 😀
I follow you on Twitter! (@ElizabethBevanH))
Couldn’t resist this, ash!! Always click on your blog and love reading it. Hope all is well in NYC!
What are our mantra’s that keep you going on your long run? I find this the most challenging part. Your have inspired me to get off my butt and stick to my training plan.
Hey,
I would love to run my first marathon next april, but first I will have to survive the first winter were i keep on running. So my question is:
What do you wear in the winter/fall time when it gets colder?
I just think these would be fun posts – What is your most embarrassing running story? Or funny runner/race story in general? Love ya!
What a great giveaway. The NYC will be my first marathon & I’m already starting to freak out, can’t believe it’s next weekend!

As you know I have many questions about running but I was wondering when do you take an ice bath and how long do you stay in the bath?
Thanks again for this giveaway! I can’t wait to cheer you on, I will let you know where I will be! Talk soon.

This giveaway is sweet! I live in my pace setter skirt from Lulu, just ran Chicago marathon in it a couple weeks ago. My question- what is the best thing you have changed in training for your second marathon compared to your first? Speedwork, nutrition, strength training?
just followed you on twitter and re-tweeted your blog contest link! also, a question: what is your favorite running pattern during the week? do you prefer long runs on the weekends and short runs during the week? or do you alternate long and short runs more frequently? thanks!
Awesome giveaway –

Just liked you on Facebook!
I’m curious to know whether or not you think it’s a good idea for someone to train for a marathon while trying to lose weight. Thanks!
What do you love most about living in NYC?
I’m new to running, but these items seem to be MUSTS as I add distance! Awesome giveaway! I’d like to know you’re #1 item to have for running in our cold NE winters. Thnx
Just liked you on FB too! 🙂
Great giveaway. My questions: Your race goals for after the NYCM? How much sleep do you average per night? Your favorite running routes in New York?
Yay! Here I come NYCM! I’ve done all the training and I’m ready to kick butt, and make my dinner reservations. 🙂 I think on question and answer I’d like to hear about alternatives to running, because after marathon training I always get so burnt out on running, that I have to get creative to find something to keep me sweating and healthy, until I fall in love with running again… it is a love/hate. I hope you have a wonderful run through NY next week, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for good weather.
Would you ever run an international marathon? Great giveaway
Sweet! I would love for you to talk about what it’s like to live and dine in NYC, and how to balance eating out with saving money and cooking at home.
LOVE this giveaway!

3. My question is- what is your favorite pre-race or pre-long run food that fuels you best? Do you think it’s more beneficial to eat this food the night before or first thing before the run?

Awesome Giveaway!!!!
I am running NYC too and it’s my first marathon EVER!!!! I’ve been stalking you and Theodora to get the inside scoop on the race! If I could only catch your ear for about thirty minutes…
Do you know your race number and corral? Again, I’m a secret blog stalker 🙂
I’m also secretly jealous of your blog meet ups! Definitely not as many “healthy/running” bloggers in Fairfield County and I’m too afraid to reach out and invade others “circles”.
I’m crossing my fingers and my toes that I win this one…if only for the compression sleeves!!!
Happy Almost Wednesday!!!

Q&A: I know you mentioned before that you were going to cut back on some the strength training and focus more on agility exercises. In general, do you think the weight training has helped or hurt your training?
Good luck with the marathon–I have enjoyed reading for awhile!

P.S. I’m totally tweeting this, liking you on facebook (even though I’m fb inept) and posting it on my blog! I just realized my your giving away headbands! My hair can use all the help it can get, and winning headbands is way more fun than buying them 🙂

q: what would your dream race be? any destination spots??
Really great giveaway. So now that I am increasing my mileage, I’m finding that it is a physical wall I am hitting not mental. Around 3-4 miles my mind has come to terms with the fact that I’m running and I’m not stopping. But my legs feel like bricks and my hips start to get really tight. My question is have you ever experienced this? And how do I decide if it is right for me to train for further races in the future?
I tweeted the giveaway as well.
My question is about your routine and fitting it all in and maybe some
More detailed workouts with your trainer not the whole thing obviously but weather or not it was total body or upper body stuff like that. Also what do you think has been the most effective in weight loss this time around with the marathon and PT!
Hi Ashley – I would be interested to hear more about your job / career aspirations / work/life balance! You put in some LONG hours!

Question: I’m weird about water bottle mold/bacteria and was wondering how/how often you clean your camelbak? I just got one and I have no idea how to clean the tube part!
Question: Any tips for what to wear based on the temperature? It’s getting colder and colder around here. Also, do you run outside in the winter or stick to the treadmill?
I “liked” you on Facebook.
Thanks for the chance to win!
I would like to know how you and Bo stay in touch when you travel for work with such a busy schedule? My husband hates talking on the phone so we bbm but it’s not the same. I would also like to know how Bo supports you in your efforts to live a healthy lifestyle.
I would love to win! Can you answer the following question….
If you could have another profession, what would it be?

My question for you is do you eat the extra treats in the office? My biggest challenge in trying to loose weight is office treats!
How have you manages not to carb load or eat more because u just ran 20 miles? You seemed to have slimmed down training. Mainly long distance athletes gain weight either from diet or I creased cortisol or blth
Liked you on Facebook! Love your blog!
I liked your facebook page! 😉
FAQ topic: How do you involve loved ones in your daily routine even when they live far away?
I was wondering what the compression sleeves or socks are for?
Just followed you on twitter! Thanks so much for an awesome giveaway!!!
Congratulations on your dedication for training for your second marathon! My question for you is how you balance your hectic work day, time with Bo, running/gym and social time? Do you plan out your workouts and meals to be cooked at home at the beginning of the week day-by-day or do you have set goals each week that you hope to accomplish, in no particular order? You mention that you work VERY long hours so your dedication to training is truly motivational and inspiring!
